Dave here, the guy that requested this. As someone else noted here, he is a big influence on Joe B. But among guitarists, like myself (I'm a long way from playing like this, I hear it takes practice, and I'm lazy) he is well known and is still playing today on tour with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. He has recorded and does sing on some songs, kind of a soft voice. I think he is in his Sixties now. Glad you enjoyed it. I can recommend quite a few guitarists that no one has heard of that play, not exactly like this but close. Roy Buchannan come to mind. He also did a ACL performance.

When he was sixteen, in 1970, he recorded an shelved album with the group Mariani, "Perpetuum Mobile". It's a Hendrixy/proto metal-thing. It've existed as a bootleg for a long time. But I think it's gotten a proper release now. He was awesome already then. It's worth checking up just for the guitar playing.

Eric Johnson is one of the very best guitar players in the world, bar none. Easily in the top five of those still alive. Guitar nerds can argue about "of all time" lists, I don't really care; when you're this good, ranking one over another is pointless, just enjoy them all.
@whatbroicanhave50character35

It's the clarity man. Most people who play for awhile can play this, but very few can nail it like he did here. Eric Johnson deserves to be revered as a literal god of guitar by all. I don't know a single person that could pull this off as cleanly as this recording (regardless of practice).

I’m 66 and first heard this when the album came out, I’ve been playing guitar about 20 years, this live version is one of the most astonishing things I’ve ever seen as far as guitar goes. Very few people can even try to cover this song and play at this level very very few, incredibly difficult to learn and to try to play. I enjoy your reaction videos!

A good one, with this pace is "Summer Song", but "Clouds Race Across The Sky" is a really mellow one. Does Lulu know about the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue in Austin?*

I think Eric said that the notes of this instrumental just came to him out of nowhere and he just started playing it out of thin air. How incredible it is that musicians just think this kind of stuff up. This is a very anthem instrumental respected by the best of musicians and guitarists. Eric received a Grammy for Best Instrumental for this masterpiece. Rightfully so and worthy of it.

Great to see your appreciation for Eric Johnson! Definitely one of the greatest guitarists ever!! I've been fortunate to see him live many times over the years, and have also been able to attend several Austin City Limits tapings. The show is now celebrating its 50th year on PBS, making it the longest running music show in American history. And that is a studio backdrop behind the band. Tis studio was located at the Communications building at the University of Texas. Now the show is filmed at the Moody Theater. I'm actually planning to see Eric Johnson again the first week of April in Austin. Again, enjoyed your reaction!!!

He was a legend among guitar players before he broke national popularity, way back in 80's sometime. Guitar Player magazine had a feature on him before any of his major label releases I think, where a whole bunch of legends talked about how amazing he was. Seems like a super nice guy too. Joe Bonamassa always apologizes to him for ripping off part of his style ( I think it's kind of joking, but partly serious too).

Austin City Limits is a PBS show. They do have an audience but it is pretty exclusive. And of course, as you can see he is one of the great guitarist of all time. Eric played the local clubs about the time I was going to school there. He is one of my faves but I never got to see him live. Check out his videos on KZbin. He will teach you how to play as good as he does. 😂He has some much new releases on KZbin where he actually sings.

When it comes to shooting a musical performance, the austin city limits camera men were some of the best. Steady tight shots of the individuals through all parts, tight shots of solos, and NEVER any flashy panning, cut aways, close ups of random pointless crap, etc. They filmed the right thing at the right time, always. They had to know/play music to do that.
