When you make donations to charity they add an option that says "would you like to cover operating costs for X$?" The idea here is if you donate 10$ and the operating cost is 2$ then the charity only gets 8$. So if you cover the operating cost in your donation they get what you would have wanted to donate.

I understood it to be, people are buying comic books that will be donated to the kids. He is selling them at 30% off (the 30% being the usual profit on an item), so he is just breaking even on sales so he is not making a profit, just covering expenses. I dunno what is super shady, other than it is the buyers making the actual donation and the comic creator is the middle man, if he claims for the charity costs on his taxes then it would be an issue, other than that....not really.

K, so by both of your definitions when grocery stores have Christmas charity hampers where you pay for the hampers of food at cost to be given to a food bank that is a charity scam? They are facilitating the charity, not making the donation themselves. It'd be like calling the red cross a charity scam because "all they do" is collect money from other people and then buy medication and services and give it at cost without going into debt, they never actually gave their own money! All charities need to be operating at a deficit to count I guess, otherwise they are breaking even and are hence a scam...wild. A scam would be if someone collects money and then never actually uses it to buy something for said charity. Admittedly a more helpful charity event would be to sell the comics at full price or an increased price and then give all of the profits (net not gross) to the charity, but it would still have them breaking even.

You have to ask yourself why he didn't just do a fundraiser for that charity. Eric learned at the knees of monied crooks so when it comes to charity he asks "But what's in it for me? Sure I might "help" that charity out but not before they help me artificially boost my comic sale numbers." That's why he chose to do such a convoluted scheme with this particular charity. And he might have gotten away with it to too, but he forgot to force a nondisclosure agreement on the charity.
@zuffin1864 Жыл бұрын
why do people give toys to charity instead of money? I don't think that alone is a worthy criticism. now if you have evidence of that being the grounds to facilitate a scam, that's different, but the evidence here is not as convincing as they say. Vito's book is 52 pages, Eric's is closer to 100. it is not an apples to apples comparison of how much a comic book costs to make. Could eric cut some corners on who he hires to make art, or on printing/shipping? maybe, but he is trying to build a brand with a consistent quality, and he can choose what that means for costs, he owns it.

@ThaCityBoi Жыл бұрын
@@uncle_ben_rices_nephew Yeah no. You don’t need a person of color to explain their culture. You know why? Because they tend to state that they “own” and “claim” certain trends/style when in fact they borrowed it or inherited it from another culture. Let me give you an example: Black folks accused white folks of cultural appropriation for the use of braids. Braids did not start with black folks, it started with the Nordic culture. This is why historians should be the only ones to explain cultural differences, because they studied it and are experts in it. So again, WHY do we need black creators? Better yet, why should we elevate a person of color as a creative mind when most likely they contribute nothing new and their skin color does not make them more creative?

I think what's going on is that Eric July is offering comics at half price as a means of allowing people to buy and donate all in one transaction. If I wanted to donate a few comics to the comics for kids organization, I could buy comics at full price and then send them myself to the charity. However, in this case, Eric July is putting an option for people who want to donate the comic on his site, offering the discounted 50% off to let people donate without spending as much as if they had bought it normally themselves, got it in the mail, then sent it off to the charity. I think the $17.50 cost encompasses both the ability for someone who wishes to donate the comic to do so at a discount as well as having Eric July's company handle the shipping/handling to the charity so the donator/customer doesn't have to do it themselves. I believe July said that people who buy the discounted comic receive proof of donation for tax purposes, meaning each comic sent via this method is not being credited as a donation from July or his company, but rather to the purchaser.
