Eric is legitimately one of the absolute greatest metal riff masters _ever_ , his pieces are just legendary on album after album, from Testament’s beginnings in the 80’s through their most recent albums. I frequently warm up with Metallica and similar artists just so I can get my fingers ready to play Eric Peterson riffs the rest of my jam session. As I write this I just spent 2 hours going over Eric’s Testament riffs from a variety of their albums from my collection of Hal Leonard books, adding pieces to various songs I don’t have solid yet. My favorite riffs of his are probably Over the Wall, Disciples of the Watch, and Souls of Black, but I could name 20+ other songs of his that would all be right behind them. Only Dave Mustaine in my opinion writes such amazing blazing riffs to the variety of scale and position use that Eric does.

He is a monster. His right hand has crazy fast, accurate downstrokes and gallops. Not unlike Hetfield, but his work seems even more demanding in that way. I play bass and it is a bitch to keep up with.

Testament is awesome. Anyways all cool bands, thrash baby \m/ I think Annihilator is the true underrated thrash machine. IMO

Does anyone know what amps, pedals, settings, etc. Eric and Alex were using on the first and second albums? That tone on the "Legacy" album is prolly the most scooped "hollowed out / metallic" thrash tone I've ever heard. I'd love to know what the trick was to get that sound. In the MTV video, it's showing Marshall heads, but not sure if that's what they were using. Now, albeit, I've seen early footage of their live shows during 1987/88, live in Eindhoven, etc. and it looks like Marshall JCM 900 heads and standard 1960-A/B Lead cabs, but there's just too much gain, hollow, and scoop for it that tone to JUST be a stock JCM900. Anyways, let me know guys! Thanks in advance!
@knightfall9394 Жыл бұрын
theres a pic of eric and alex where they are both standing in front of jcm800 stacks (not 900s they didn’t exist at that time) and off to the side you can see a furman parametric eq. You cant make out the settings in the pic and if i had to guess they probably dont have the preamp maxed out at all and were relying on the furman (or at least one of them was) for a lot of it. I can’t comment on the new order so i have no idea what they had

I watch the "slowed down" version and I can't decide whether to bow or tell him to fuck off. Incredible dexterity and precision. People go on and on about the Big 4, but Testament's consistency is top shelf and Eric's endless bag of riffs is a big part of it.

Lots of practice, it helps to make a practice routine to do every day. And also learn songs and try to improve each time you play, because playing a whole song with the track is the best feeling ever.

@humanimal55274 жыл бұрын
If you are very new to guitar I would recommend learning other styles of playing before trying to learn thrash metal songs. Not that it's impossible, but you'll probably get discouraged at your rate of progression. If you're dead set on learning thrash I would say learn the minor pentatonic scale first (ideally in all shapes so you can play all over the neck, but start with position 1). Then pick a song with a good lesson video that shows the neck up close and also the picking hand. Pick a very popular thrash song because most obscure ones won't have professionally shot lesson vids on KZbin. It will take you a very long time to learn most thrash songs in their entirety as a beginner. They also won't sound nearly as cool if you don't have an amp and a distortion pedal. I would say learn all the open chords and get strumming down first. Pick some classic rock tunes.
@Kronoph3 жыл бұрын
You can do this in like 2 years of conscious teaching and playing. This example is _not_ something mind-blowing in terms of technique and complexity. There are much better examples, see Jeff Waters, Victor Smolski, Dimebag Darrell. Non-metal examples: Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, Richie Kotzen.
