Eric Ripert is a hypocrite. Ripert promoted abuse is his own kitchen. Ripert's second in command, the Chef de Cuisine at Le Bernardin, abused the staff for 20 years. He was finally fired after being sued for burning another chef with a hot pan in the middle of a tirade. Chefs lived in fear at Le Bernardin. Ripert knew this was going on and did nothing. Eric Ripert, like Rene Redzepi, abusing staff are simply doing damage control. As ususal, the powerful have a voice. The victims have no voice. These chefs are no better than politicians... and I won't get started with how rigged Le Bernardin's 3 Michelin Stars are. We are all being played.

The problem is most chefs are too proud about their cooking skills that they forget how to treat people and talk to them. There definitely needs to be discipline in the kitchen but at the same time there is a right way to yell at someone and then there is a wrong way to do it. A good chef is not just someone who makes good food but also treats people the right way, most chefs don't know how to do that. Culinary school doesn't teach you that part

100% agree with Chef Ripert. After 27 years as a Chef I am ashamed that reality TV has made a mockery of what should be a joyful art form. Learn the dance and bring good to those you cook for and with.

In the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsey's attitude is completely different. The same goes for the AU version of Masterchef compared with the US version; the atmosphere is completely different. I think US media companies think, "this is what Americans want" but it is a phenomenon they themselves created. I find myself seeking shows like the AU version of Masterchef BECAUSE the contestants are kinder to each other, the mood calmer and the focus on education rather than competition.

Was looking for this comment about Kitchen Nightmares the UK vs the US version. My mother loves watching Gordon, and i'm not offended by his language, but once the show starts bleeping all his vulgar language all i hear from my office is the beeping and i ask her to turn if off (i can't listen to the constant, random beeping)

What a great point, thank you for talking about being good to people. Its the thing we all forget, in the end we are all humans trying to survive an existence thats out to get us, war, disease, global warm, asteroids you name it... We need to go back to being Human First above all else. I think that starts with respect of one another, and then compassion. Thank you

Have you watched his boiling point show in the UK? Besides verbally abusing his chefs he also physically abuses them by yanking them by shirt or aprons and threatens to throw them out into the streets he also body checks them a lot too.In that regard I don't blame Joe for getting in Ramsays face even if we all know Gordon is a black belt

I agree. Gordon once complained about TV-chefs calling them "Teletubbies" Now he's the worst Teletubby of them all which I think will only harm him in the end...Quite sad because the man can cook. I hate his shows, but the non-competition stuff where he shows the audience how to prepare meals are awesome.

research has shown that insulting people and becoming emotional is not effective way to teach them, though a lot of industry and educational institutes choose to use the easiest and least effective way of handling problems (corporal punishment or verbal assault) like congrats, it works with some people, good job for missing out on a ton of otherwise equally (or better) skilled people/chefs/professionals/etc. who didn't want to/couldn't deal with your abuse over petty things

I had a teacher in high school who taught our band class, he would yell, throw drumsticks, hell, I even saw him tackle a student to the ground. If you made too many mistakes you had to just sit there all class and watch everyone else play. If you missed a note sometimes he would just start the song over from scratch. All the kids who made it through the years with this teacher went from hating him to loving the class. We always got superior at all our tournaments, most of the class made districts, and at the end of the day if you took your instrument seriously enough you were just left with a teacher who cared too much and would treat you like an adult who you could have real conversations with. As insane as he was, I never had a better teacher in my life and I'd never trade what we had for anything.

The unfortunate part is that irrational actions in popular culture can begin to impact reality, in that some chefs may perceive the seemingly common aggression portrayed in the media as the norm. This problem is compounded by the argument that "shock and awe" components of the media draw more attention, and thus bring in more money for the producers.

There is a word for that behavior in the bible.. It's called oppression (Isaiah 30:12) "Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: this sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly, in an instant...... (verse 15) "For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not."
