I'm going through a lot right now, my mom passed away from COVID on March 1st, 2022, my sister passed away from ovarian cancer on November 7, 2017, my dad passed away May 6, 2014, that's my immediate family. I am currently living in a homeless shelter in Iowa, I had to sell my mom's house cause my name wasn't on the deed. I went to Minnesota only to end up at the homeless shelter in Minneapolis, I have seen stuff I don't ever wanna see again my life. In Minneapolis I didn't know anybody there. Scared out of my mind cause I was downtown Minneapolis, I made it back to my hometown, just to end up back where I started. I've been alone on this mission trying to find an apartment and a job. And this motivational speech, just spoke to me. I'm glad I ran into this speech. I understand and can feel his pain. I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!

Every day, all day I was throwing up, lost 25 lbs, dehydrated multiple times. At the same time, I was having debilitating neck pain, ended up getting fired over the phone because of all my doctor's appointments. Had a major neck surgery, 2 weeks later my wife and kids as well as me got covid. Fell into a deep deep depression, I lost myself. This video gave me hope. I needed it, thank you. I have been watching your videos for YEARS, I watched a lot of them while in the military. Keep up the great work, you are saving more lives than you realize.

The message in this is so powerful. From the time I was 14 to now I’ve been through hell and back. Had my son at 15 and got looked down on since then, friends went away and people told me I wouldn’t be anything and I started believing that. Saying I wouldn’t graduate in time and all these negative things to me but never nothing to help me or push me. Watching Eric thomas has made my life turn in such a major way. I watched him since 10th grade, I’ve graduated now. Class of 2021 and I’m now a sophomore in college. GOD THANK YOU😭💙 for everything you have done for me for pushing me, I will not give up, I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED I will keep pushing to my goal to be one of the best neurosurgeons 💙💙💙

It really made me feel like time is going by and I have to keep going. For her. For us. I made a vow that I wouldn’t entertain a guy until accomplish my goals. Let me start by saying, 5 1/2 years ago I got clean from a heroin addiction/painkillers. Innocently enough I was introduced to opiate painkillers 19 years ago, after knee surgery. I rode the peaks and valleys of addiction until the pills were not enough! I didn’t have these videos When I decided to make a stand and stop destroying myself, my family and my spirit. I did not go to rehab, I did not get put on methadone or Suboxone or any other medication other than a blood pressure medicine. To be an addict you have to be weak you have to feel sorry for yourself every day you have to think nobody understands the pain or torment you suffer from mentally due to circumstances you encountered during your childhood so you use that as your steppingstone to justify your addiction! So I decided although I didn’t search out the drug initially, nobody did this to me but myself! So it almost 34 years old I decided it was time to move past being a victim that I proclaimed that I was and become the man, the son, The brother, the uncle the husband and most importantly the father everyone deserved. With that said, this is where my particular story may not be unique in the grander scheme, but the way in which I started my sobriety wasn’t from motivation from my family believe me there was definitely that but it never motivated me the way I needed it to. My motivation came from someone who said one thing to me among the mini positive things this gentleman said the very first day I stopped using heroin. He was no relation not even a friend! He was a doctor that I had seen for the past 12 years. I told him that I was sorry for all the stories I made up to get early refills on my Vicodin all the times I came and sat in front of him and lied to his face. I’m not sure why I felt so compelled to unload this weight on this man. But after five minutes of my apologies and how ashamed I was, I stop talking waiting for a response and one came seemed like an eternity he was staring at me with his hand on my knee with sort of a half cocked smile on his face he said this and only this to me. Son in my 25 years of being a primary care physician you are the fifth person that has sat in here and unloaded this weight that comes with being an opiate addict. But out of those 5 you are the only one that will do this and never turn back! So naturally I was emotional and I gave the vanilla, thank you that means a lot I’m gonna do my best and he stopped me and said I don’t want to hear what everyone else says what they think I want to hear! He said I’m going to tell you this and this alone! I need you to transcend yourself! Now this might make sense to whomever may read this. But too many as it did to me, I did not understand what he meant. I understood the definition of transcend, I did not understand how old play into the next two months of hell that I would have to go through to push this beast out of my life. So I left his office that day quit my job surrounded myself with the people I know that my bullshit would fall on deaf ears my lies whatever it was that I would try to pull to get out of the house alone and with money. I went through 2 1/2 months of withdrawals and vicious and violent withdrawals! But 3 1/2 months later I decided to step out of the house and start this new life. I was confident I was driven and I had all that forgotten the simple words that man told me in his office that day. Until at 3 1/2 months I return to work and on this particular day I was training a new employee this gentleman was about 10 years older than me, at the time I was unaware of anything about this man other than his name and where he was from. Now if you’ve read this post to this point some of this may resonate if you struggled with any substance abuse and maybe still struggle! Earlier I told you that he said one simple sentence that I didn’t understand the time forgotten about and 3 1/2 months later in the day just like any other day Training a gentleman I didn’t know his words hit me with a clarity that I can only surmise he had hoped would be the outcome of his statement that I have to transcend myself. So at 9:30 in the morning this gentleman asked if he could have a moment to check his blood sugar of course I obliged thought nothing of it my grandfather was diabetic it’s a very common thing. After the gentleman checked his blood sugar I was talking to another employee when the conversation ended I turned to ask the gentleman if his blood sugar was OK? I turned around to see him injecting himself with insulin with a needle! The same needle that I was very familiar with! And you know what happened? Nothing happened. I didn’t see a needle that I used to shoot heroin with none of that happened! All I saw was a man giving himself an insulin injection! And in a matter of seconds, I called my doctors office I told him it was very important that I speak to him they immediately patch me through he got on the other line I had not seen or spoken to him since The day I unloaded my addiction and the day he told me those very poignant words. I told him what just happened and I said I think I did it the right way I think I’m gonna be OK and I was excited I was happy and I was proud of myself. After I rambled for about a minute or two he very calmly said to me Do you understand now? And I paused briefly, and said I’m not sure with legitimate confusion until he said I told you that you needed to transcend yourself! And you have done exactly that. Now the story is long takes a couple turns but if anybody reading this struggles with addiction I can’t tell you how I got to the point mentally to be able to accomplish something I didn’t understand. But the moment that I realized to transcend myself meant not to change myself I was still me I didn’t lean on anything to keep myself sober over these last 5 1/2 years I didn’t do it for anyone or anything I didn’t do a 12 step I did not go to rehab I did not take medication that in themselves will cause a new addiction I just did it! So just know that if you’re reading this and you suffer from addiction whether you’ve been clean for a short period or you’re struggling with wanting to get clean once you make your mind up and you do not lie to yourself that you’re doing the best that you can and you’re not things will just fall into place without you even realizing it until that moment that you were confronted with your addiction being clean and it means as much to you as a bottle cap laying on the ground or lint in your pocket! It becomes nothing to you because you have transcended the addict and are the person that you Were meant to be. So when I found this video I wept, I didn’t cry! I left because the pain and suffering that is still palpable in Mr. Thomases voice can be heard by anyone who watches this video! That can only truly be understood when he Says, it wasn’t a straight Road, Wasn’t laid out saying go this way. It’s been rough, it’s been crooked, it’s been hard! But he had made up in his mind that he will receive a reward for the pain that he has gone through! His path and mine are vastly different but the outcome is the same you have to ALLOW YOUR PAIN TO PUSH YOU TO GREATNESS!! So another words you have to TRANSCEND YOURSELF! I watch these motivational videos every single day sometimes multiple times a day not to maintain sobriety! But life is the same for you and for me as it is for Mr. Thomas it’s not fair it never has been it never will be so be unkind to it as it has been to you get up every day and grind. Thank you for anyone that read this. This is just my story And I thank you for reading if in fact you get through this immensely short version but long message. If I can “Mr. Thomas never let it rest until you’re good is better and you’re better’s best.

Eric. I’m so thankful that God gave you this gift. He used you and your word to change my life and my way of thinking. I’m no longer a slave to my pain I’m no longer a victim I’m a victor. I don’t want to die… I want to live… I want to give back… He has delivered me. Your words gave me that extra push to dig deep within to do the work on myself. I’m in church. Im sober. Im healed. My marriage is saved. I have all six of my kids. I own an electrical contracting business in San Diego. God used you to save me… and I still lean on your words today. I thank Him for you! Please don’t stop being who you are!

Despite having spent the last week or so defeated, my husband played this speech for me. Today my husband and I banned together to dominate the issues and join God's army in the fight against the hard things. We will not be defeated. One step closer to a yes. Thank you for posting this.
