DSi XL Still Worth it in 2020? Heck yes!

DSi XL is still THE BEST way to play Nintendo DS games! Here's why! Never going back to playing DS games on the 3DS! So yes, it was totally worth the price to me. I wanted to experience a unit right out of the box.

Some don’t realize this but the DS, DSi and DSi XL have the same resolution (the same amount of pixels: 192x256). The 3DS line has MORE pixels than the DS line - higher resolution 240x800. When playing, images on the DS lite to the DSi XL there is no “stretching” (scaling) done. The DSi XL just has bigger pixels. The 3DS has to scale. Or you can play at the native resolution and aspect in the Native mode so it fits to a represented 192x256 pixels on the screen. As you see here though there is pixel pairing done on the 3DS too so you never actually get native <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="61">1:1</a> gameplay with DS games at all.

@@tonyp9534 Mario Kart is excellent ! But best way to get all the games is to get an R4 Cart that you can put a micro SD card into. Then you can put ROMs on it. No need to hack the DSi to be able to do that.

The GUARANTEED IPS screens on DSi XL are honestly deal-makers for sure. I love them, and I always knew that the DSi XL just flat out looked much better than the Lite or even 3DS when playing DS games. Happy to see your insights. Got a DSi XL a while back and even used the battery is just amazing and games look perfect. The colors really pop when playing those sprite-based 2D games too.

No joke. I bought a New 2DS XL (my first console of the 3DS family) about two weeks ago and I've been playing a lot with it. DS games however really bothered me what with the blurry image and black bars. So I decided to search for a DSi XL though I wasn't entirely convinced, I search through the Internet for a comparison of displays, specifically the pixels, because I'm really interested in that kind of stuff and I needed to know if the additional cost was worth it to have the bets experience possible for DS games. There are a few comparisons out there, but nothing like this video. It's just bizarre that in the spawn of time I needed to find a GOOD comparison, you happen to upload this video and it is the best thing I've ever seen, honest to God, every doubt and question I had you answered them fully, going so much in depth as to mention how the pixels work on 3DS machines or the fact that the New 2DS XL uses the same display as the 3DS due to cost saving measures. I have no doubt, if it were anyone else, they've overlooked this kind of stuff, but you really went all out. This truly is synchronicity. I'll be buying a DSi XL with zero doubts in my mind now.

You really won't regret it. And it having guaranteed Dual IPS screens means its pretty friendly buying a used system. Looking back, it's odd that they didn't continue this with the 3DS as having uniform color and contrast really helps sell the 3D effect as a feature and not a gimmick.

Then there's me sitting here with my brother's and sister's DSi XLs from back in the day... (my other brother broke his in rage...) I just keep them with me in case they ever wanted to play some DS games with me again. My blue DSi XL has to be my most cherished DS console (I still keep my Lucario sticker on it. It matches so nicely haha). It was night and day going from the DS Lite. I like how the systems are all just waiting for me to get back and re-experience everything that I loved about the DS. Someday I'll get back to them... I also hope that you can pick one up again at some point. I did some searching and they're around $100 AUD. There was also this somewhat recent exploit that was discovered for the DSi systems that can allow you to play any DS game and a few other consoles without needing the physical cartridges (like an R4 card, but free). All you need is an SD card (or microSD card with the SD card adapter). I thought that might have been of interest to you. I hope you have a great day/night whenever you read this. :)

Saw this video when it was initially uploaded, but I just now bought a DSi XL for a fairly good price off Facebook thanks to you! I’ve been playing DS games on 3DS with no issue, but after seconds of revisiting them on the DSi XL, my DS carts are never going back in a 3DS. I also never got any type of DSi thanks to being madly in love with the DS Lite and its GBA slot, but using the DSi XL in 2021 is still an absolute treat!

Seeing you open this new takes me back to my childhood. I remember being so amazed when my friend showed me flipnote studio, then I saw the Midnight blue DSi XL advertised on TV, and knew I had to have it. I got a job selling magazine subscriptions door to door so I could buy it, and eventually I saved up enough! Me and my siblings had so much fun with this thing, making flipnotes, recording ourselves, taking funny pictures. The simple sight of a brand new Nintendo DSi XL being unpacked unlocks so many fond memories of my childhood. It has me starting to tear up.

Great condition, considering its used and I love the box-y and overall design a lot. been using it and omg I was hesitant that id notice the difference from my 2ds xl too much but its really night and day. The main thing for me that makes me debate playing my DS games on my DSi vs New 3ds is the Activity Log. Ive always loved how detailed the 3DS’ activity log is and I just wished they had put one in the DSi

A few months ago, I bought a New 3DS XL. It was my first ever 3DS system. I absolutely love it but DS games just don't look good on it at all. So just a few weeks later, I picked up a DSi XL and haven't regretted it at all. It's a huge upgrade over my poor DS Lite that's worn out from over a decade of use and I still have my N3DSXL for 3DS games. Having two separate systems for DS and 3DS games may sound complicated at first but I've found it surprisingly easier to manage my games this way. The DSi can also be modded and that unlocks a ton of new capabilities such as being able to run games including ROM hacks stored on an SD card.

The primary reason I like to play DS games on my 3DS rather than a DS or DSi is the play activity log. I can see how long each of my playthroughs take and how much time I spend during each play session. Looking at my play history is something I very much value. Otherwise the DS or DSi is the superior way to play.

My old DSi xl had been gathering dust in a draw for years, until I found a video recently about modding it with custom firmware. I took the plunge and modded it, and holy cow I’m now playing it all the time, absolutely love it again. Definitely right that DS games (and GBA for that matter) look vastly better on a DSI XL than they do a 3DS XL.

My sister wanted a DSi for her birthday back in 2010, but she thought it was the Normal one, until she noticed that it was the XL (I mean, she didn't noticed that, but I do and I didn't said nothing cuz I thought she wanted the XL one). It was worth after all, it was in offer. The Flipnote Studio still Worth today for the DSi XL by their bigger screen for a better drawing, until Hatena died, but the app still working. Lately we got the DS Lite. Looks colorful in there, but I prefer the XL cuz I can see everything better, and of course looks far better than 3DS.

I look forward to the eBay experience of opening a device wrapped in dodgy newspaper and battered cardboard, secured with wrapping tape to the extreme that could keep a working internal combustion engine together. I'm probably one of the few people who really don't mind the blurry/stretched look of DS games on 3DS systems. Yes, it's noticeable better on a DS system with native resolution, but I don't think it's so hideous as to enjoy the games less I own a DS original, DS lite and 2DS XL currently and the 2DS XL is the one I use primarily for DS games. Big screens, a circle pad and comfortable to hold

I think I sat here for 4 hours trying to figure out the best way to play my DS games. The lack of knowledge or content that explains it on KZbin and beyond is just incomplete or all over the place. I have a lot of DS games. But, my DS has reached it's end, years of abuse from the Navy and moving have harmed my buddy. You have given me exact information and I even learned a little bit. I wasn't sure if I wanted to even get a 2DS XL or 3DS XL and I'm glad I found this so I can just get a DSi XL. My 3DS is in great condition and I have 2 of them so I'm very happy with the console and don't really need a bigger version of it. Playing my DS games on a larger screen with <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="61">1:1</a> pixels is all ever wanted. You bet your ass I'm a subscriber now! Thank you.

I have that exact DSi XL model! Had it since Christmas 2010 or so, and as I'm typing I'm actually playing Pokémon Platinum on it. Honestly, much better than 3DS, which I only use for DS games if i need to trade pokemon in Gen 4. Still need to get my hands on a DS Lite though, GBA games are hard to see on a GBA (and once again, Pokemon Reasons. I wanna transfer pokemon from Emerald to Gen 4)

Very helpful video, thanks a lot! Always had a lite and bought a 3DS recently (not an XL) and was thinking of adding a 3DS XL even though my DS library is way bigger. I wanted to experience those games more comfortable for the eyes, it wasn't all about the graphics. I know what I'm getting now!

the 3DS XL streches 3DS games the same way DSi XL stretches DS games, which is very well, however, 3DS and 3DS XL stretch DS games poorly

Mateus Elias the DSi doesn’t stretch the image whatsoever. It’s pixel perfect, just like the DS lite and the DS. The DSi XL and the DSi just have bigger pixels. The 3DS and 3DS XL have different resolutions so scaling must be done on the image.

The DSi is the same exact resolution as the DS and DS Lite. Just bigger pixels. The 3DS has a larger resolution. So the image must be scaled.

the dsi xl is the only ds I've had that hasn't broken on me. I went through 3 ds lites(all snapped in half), a dsi xl (heavily dented and somewhat melted from the sun) a 3ds xl (snaped in half) and a new 3ds xl (touch screen doesn't work in certain areas)

Oh I never knew that the 3ds had those issues with playing ds games.... It's something interesting thing to keep in mind, but I definitely would play ds games on a 3ds, I think I'll get used to those isssues, they are not a deal breaker to me... Anyway, That was an interesting video about the dsi xl(A bit pricey though xd)

Saw your video a few days ago and today I successfully purchased a yellow dsi xl from ebay. I already own a new 3ds xl, an old 3ds xl and a ds lite.
