I've searched high and low for this answer, I was always holding my power around my throat. And video after video I've tried many techniques with no real result. My throat area would always feel over flexed and felt as you mentioned like being pulled down or heavy soon as I tried to sing with ANY power. I know my muscle memory was to blame but I couldn't find where to redirect my focus. And man you nailed it, I'm just a guy trying to learn for fun and just amazed and happy you posted this. I know this sounds like an exaggeration but you have literally changed my life. I'm a professional Voice Actor and I held sooooo much tension in my throat while performing and singing. I could tell something was "wrong" with my voice despite booking a lot of gigs over the last 8 years of Voice Acting. Today was the first day I felt like I was speaking/singing with MY voice. I worked today and sang and felt ZERO tension in my throat. My voice finally sounds full and powerful and my ability to stay on pitch felt like second nature. Thank you so much for this lesson!

This video helped me more than any other to make my chest voice easier to use and less strenuous! I just watched this yesterday and can now sing with my normal chest register three half steps lower to what I used to only be able to growl, plus everything is so much cleaner and fuller sounding with way less tension in my throat. This should be the first thing that any new singer learns to prevent injury and improve technique!

I went for a dozen classes with an elderly gentleman back in 2014 in Charlotte (Robert I think, found him on Thumbtack) and later discontinued. Now, after all these years I am realizing that this "ssssss" technique is what he taught me in his very first class!!! I was not very disciplined back then and now that I have started to practise singing on Smule I realized how important a bigger chest range is to sing a song rather than what I have been trying to do all these years - which is trying to improve my head voice/high range. I need to now start incorporating what Eric teaches into my voice training. I hope to find my full voice eventually.

Man you've made me be surprised of myself, I play the piano but have always wanted to be able to sing at the same time, and everyone always told me I can reach the notes quite well since I have a good ear, but that I struggle to not make it sound strained. But your video immediately changed that! Some singer friends told me I should tense my abdomen like when we stand up from a chair, but your way of identifying and tensing the muscle is completely different and yielded immediate results, thank you so much !

Thank you so much! This is the first video I've ever encountered on KZbin that has actually helped me to understand how a chest voice works, and how I can actually develop it. I normally feel very tired after a full vocal warmup. I just applied this technique of expanding the ribs and actively engaging the epigastrium (diamond) for the first time ,and I do not feel NOWHERE NEAR as tired as I did before when I wasn't using my body for support. The voice is also more powerful, fuller and it finally feels like am not lifting a heavy boulder on the high notes. The high notes become more of an "attitude" let out with a sigh but the mechanism of the body support is the same on high or low notes. This expansion of the ribs on the inhale and pushing the epigastrium "button" is s a game changer! Like an added turbo.

There's something that I've realized today about my voice. I also struggle to get to that point where my voice is nice, clean and polished. It always feels like I'm blocking my vocals somehow from coming out. So, I decided to speak with the deeper voice in me that I always wake up with and end up ditching as the day passes....dear Lord, that was the best workout ever for my voice. I spoke random sentences to myself for about 20mins just trying to connect with it. My natural God ordained voice that's not 2 octaves high lol literally helped me sing better today. I don't know if there is a name for it but I guess the foundation of singing starts with getting in touch with your real voice and then everything else becomes easier. Hope this helps someone out there....xxx

There are other channels but they don’t take into account peoples range and start singing at such high notes like fam I’m here so I can get there cuz I’m not there yet.
