I've been studying your videos, so solid, thank you, very helpful. Your teaching style is really good, and I love how you include other coaches. Okay, so it seems (to me) as if in other videos on backswing, you bring hands higher with initially little more space between hands and body? In this video you bring little more inside, it seems, you bring back flatter. This makes more sense, as I work to keep inside to out, adding lag and to preventing centrifugal force overtaking, and insuring correct body movements, and impact on downswing.

Eric, I’ve seen that same wall drill but they actually hold the club during the wall drill. The goal is to stay connected and not hit the wall with your club during the backswing. Do you like that or would you say that is not the ideal backswing?

Eric, at about 9 minutes in to the video you have your back against the wall and a club by your trail hip. BTW, I love my Cogorno Golf membership and video lessons. Thanks

The easiest drill I’ve done to shorten my swing is doing the same as they do here. Use the shafts w a noodle over your trail shoulder. If you go too far, you’ll hit the noodle. It almost feels like your hitting a knock down shot or 3/4 swing but your doing it right if you don’t hit the noodle. Then take the noodle away and hit some shots w the same feeling as the shaft and noodle there. Works great

So, last night I did the Wall drill, although I'm somewhat limited due to injuries, ect. Anyway, I did the best I could. Tonight at the range I focused on that, and getting much more width, I did start out short and slow, however I was hitting way behind the ball..So, I figured out that with the extra width, and dropping into the "slot" I wasn't rotating, i.e. I was way out of sync..Once I got into sync, things started going really well. I began with my 56* wedge, once I made solid contact, I could see the distance gains, guessing about 5 to 8 yards, but the most important part is the contact, so pure with consistency. Moving all the way up to driver, I saw and experienced the same gains, and good strikes. Soooo, Thanks again Eric, and Ben..Oh, and thanks to you, some people have the nerve to actually watch me hit balls, and some ask for advice..lol I do work hard at my game..:)

Eric, this feels like the club gets pretty far inside on the backswing. I had always thought that you turn and the right elbow folds/wrists start to hinge as the hands and arms work in an upward motion to help keep them in front of your body. Is there any risk here with getting stuck too deep on the backswing or being too flat?
@CogornoGolf3 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! Yeah there is always risk in doing ANY movement. I would use video vs the checkpoints Hands over feet when club first parallel Hands in line with right pec/bicep when left arm parallel Hands behind right shoulder at the top The checkpoints are the gold then you can correlate your feels to those points I would confirm this with video so you dont have to guess

when I have too much depth- in the downswing- push left or have a bad hook! is there a tip for that?
If you are like me and you don't "get" the body turn controling the arms, try swinging the hands "not the club head" wide and almost in a straight line parallel to target. If grip is right and you keep your trail elbow at your side, the club would hinge automatically and the weight of the clubhead will pull the body into rotation. Give it a shot. I give up with the body leading the arms. Just can't get it.

Eric, in my simple mind his takeaway/backswing focusing on turn (with minimal arm elevation) to create depth seems to contradict many of your videos where you encourage a steeper backswing, or position at the top, in order to shallow the club during the downswing (as you often say, 'do the opposite').
@CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks for the message! I think we need to differentiate the HANDS from the SHAFT when we are talking about "steeper" I think Bens checkpoints are pretty darn close to what I would normally suggest in all my videos as you can see below (club down toe hands in line with right pec/bicep, butt of club between heel like and middle of right foot) kzbin.info/www/bejne/boXNp3Z-eKaEZsU Now when you say STEEPER....thats the SHAFT being more VERTICAL... I always suggest butt of club ON or just inside the ball line on way back....YOU CAN do that REGARDLESS of backswing HAND path checkpoints (which is what this was about....HAND path) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKLYgpRojNdjmLs kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWGbg6F4aLWdqM0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqG6gIqvaraKmrs hope that helps

Eric, think you might be giving this 'best coach in Tennessee' a tad too much credit without giving his teaching serious critique of your own. :) In this vid, and I'm sure you'd agree if you watch your backswing, he actually made your takeaway way below the plane, at the expense of stressing the connected turn. I think teaching a shoulder turn as a standalone movement can be grossly misleading, as novice golfers more often than not don't know how to merry up their arms' vertical motion with the 'turn'. I've always thought that body rotation is a reaction rather than action in golf swings, i.e. as the club swings around your spine, it happens as otherwise your arms can't go anywhere. Thought I would share my thoughts on this because I remember some 20 odd years ago some guy taught me to turn and it completely messed up my backswing for a long time. The damage this advice led to was that I ended up rotating flat and it was never in sync with my my arms, effectively creating a false rotation.

I'm confused. Eric you've previously stated that the hands should be opposite the right pectoral muscle but now you're saying they should be opposite the right bicep? Also wasn't it Lee Trevino ( a great ball striker) who said he pictured two pieces of 2"x4" timber, one on each shoulder and the hands never went outside these (ie opposite the right pectoral for a r/handed player)?
@CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Sorry for any confusion... In most of the videos I use RIGHT PEC...but the bicep and the pec at this position are no more than 1-2 inches apart...so is that THAT big of a difference? I don't think so.. Not sure about that quote...many great players FEEL something but REALLY DO something completely different. I would encourage you to youtube down the line slow motion of the best ball strikers (or any swing you like) Check where the hands are at left arm parallel and then butt of club at the top MOST good ball strikers hands are between sternum/right bicep at left arm parallel Butt of club between middle of right foot and heel line Bicep and heel line would be on the "deep" end of spectrum...which would be GREAT for most. Hope that helps you and clears up any confusion you may have had

I don't think a perfect back swing is that important ! Firstly, who decides what's perfect and what is the perfect body for a perfect swing. . not all of the legends of golf from the 60's onward had a perfect back swing but they were great at the point of ball contact! even the pro's of today, not all in fact most don't have the perfect back swings, Like the Copybook swing of Adam Scott. People would say that the Golden Bear, and his wrist putting action is not perfect today yet his putting won him tournament after tournament.. as for me I don't have the ability to turn my back as much and being over 60 I don't go to far passed my shoulder yet so my body wont give me the perfect back swing, yet I still hit my driver 250+m with a draw. That is what I call a perfect drive! and that's plenty for me.

It doesn't matter what you do in the backswing. Matthew Wolff proves it. It's what you do at impact.
@guitar19504 жыл бұрын
There is truth in what you say. Bradley Hughes teaches this concept. Many great players have very different back swings. Ray Floyd and Jim Furyk move their hands almost straight up with Floyd taking the club head way behind him and Furyk taking the club head more out in front. Having said that, not many people can do what they do or Matthew Wolff either. I've been tinkering with my swing and have found that the deeper I get my hands behind me and avoid cupping my lead wrist and keeping my lead arm connected to my chest I hit much better shots with more accuracy and distance. Depends on the person, their strength, flexibility, coordination, grip (strong, neutral, weak), and all the body part movements and if they complement each other or if compensations are needed to counter certain movements. Impact is the moment of truth. The question is, can you get there from where you started and from transition. Here's to better golf!
@TheWhatYouNeed4 жыл бұрын
Disagree... it does matter what you do... Wolff, probably, does this in his swing to make sure he is going out to in. He could’ve be a club rapper and needed something drastic in his swing to get him on the proper plane to start his down swing.
