apartment wanted more than 100 dollars to install a light for front of garage. installed this one and will take it when I move. liked the light

I put mine up over a year ago and it still works great and burns as bright and long as when it was new. Very simple and easy installation and even in the early morning hours it still shines bright when the sensor is tripped. One thing I remember about the installation is that for maximum battery life you have to keep the selector switch in the "off" position for a minimum amount of time (something like 24 or 48 hours) for the battery to get a full charge before turning it on for the first time.

I've been through two winter storms with the light I show in this video as well as one attached to a gutter guard in the backyard to let the dog out. They both work great still even after the one in the back being slightly iced over.

For Aussies you can buy a virtually identical setup from (of all places) The Reject Shop (a popular dollar store chain in Australia) for thirty dollars (AU)...that's about US$25. As long as you angle the solar panel so that it gets maximum coverage during daylight and you install the system in the morning (so that it gets a good first charge) you'll find these things work quite well. I have four of them around my house to supplement my normal floodlighting. They don't have the same lumen rating as an AC floodlight but they do an okay job. The internal rechargeable battery pack should last about three years with normal use and you can buy cheap replacements on Ebay.

@@EricDIY You definitely can cut the wire to make it shorter, the plug has nothing to do with that. Just cut out the section you want, and splice the wires back together. I did mine today and made my wire only about a foot long. Plus I removed the solar panel from the big ugly frame and mounted it directly to the top of the roof on a shingle, so it's hidden from the ground. By the way you can get an even better light just like this, but with 100 LEDs, for only $20 shipped on eBay.

You might consider moving the collector down then slope it so that runoff doesn't hit it so hard. Snow will also slide off more easily. I have four of these on my 2.5 acres and plan to buy more. One failed right out of the box due to bad batteries. Swapped it under warranty and now all is well. Wax the solar panel.
@susieq73448 жыл бұрын
+Bill Jenkins What kind of wax did you use? Thank you.
@billjenkins6878 жыл бұрын
Susie, Sorry for the late response. Any kind of liquid car wax is good. It just helps to prevent accumulation of snow, bird crap and other contamination. Good question. Bill

These things are hit or miss, got one 3 years ago and it was awesome. Just replaced it because the batteries just wouldn't charge anymore (figured a 3 year life was pretty good). Anyway, got another from Harbor Freight again...but its a total dud. Actually did the full 2-3 days charge before I turned it to "auto" as directed. It started out really bright like a new one should, but now, 2-3 days later, it is not bright at all. Much like the replaced one, like it won't charge. Then I noticed it is always on, even in the middle of the day. I have the LUX, TIME and SENS all at minimum settings...can't go any lower and it just lights up no mater how bright it is. Of course it won't charge if it is hardly ever off. Well, going back for yet another. I'll give it one more shot.

Hi my name is Kim and I am going to purchase this either today or tomorrow from Harbor Freight, on sale for $27.99. I have a few questions based on what I have been reading below. Very good comments. Does it come with a warranty, if so how do you do it? There was a question about a rechargeable battery replacement, from maker at $32.95. I thought this was simply a solar unit? These may be silly questions because I haven't purchased this yet, if so I am sorry. I also seen a video that was very helpful. I noticed that he had the solar part bent in an upward position. If the solar part face the east and I put the light right around the corner facing north, should I have the solar part just standing in the flat position? Would that help with the rain and snow build up? Does everyone wax their unit? If anyone has any feed back that would help me, I should would appreciate it. If not that is fine maybe I should have purchased first. I did find in storage another light but it requires wiring which I am not a fan of.
@mick558 жыл бұрын
Optimal placement for the solar panel is facing south at an angle. The way I see you have it, it will not get optimal exposure. These are pretty nifty though aren't they.

Have you moved the solar panel since posting this? I am just curious as you set it under an eave where rain will drench it and snow load (if you are north) will knock it off. A friend of ours put his panel up in about the same place and lost it to weather the first wind storm (severe wind).

I really don't know. I would say a couple of hours. Also, you would have to manually go up and flip the on/off switch every time unless you devised something with a diy hack.

can u keep it on for long periods like say 2 hrs? kind of like an outside porch light?
@EricDIY8 жыл бұрын
It has a timer on it so no. It only stays on for the preset time (I think up to two minutes) when it detects motion. If it detects motion while it is about to go off or after is has gone off, it will go on again for another preset time of minutes or seconds.
