I’m so happy you talked about free client work. I was able to get two clients during this upcoming grad season to shoot their grad pics for free. It’s the first time I’m going to be doing a shoot for someone besides a close friend or family. I’m nervous as hell but I trust myself to do great. This is so encouraging

Broo good luck!! I was like that for a long time. I'm so introverted too. I was only using friends to do shoots and I'd take my camera everywhere just to take free photos for practice that I never had photos with people outside of my few friends. I started photography 8 months ago with literally no knowledge of any of it. Now, I'm getting booked for shoots by other people it's overwhelming but such a great feeling to know how much it paid off because I know what I'm doing now. I did a college soccer team a week ago, I'm doing a brand in April, and I just got hired for the atlanta tattoo convention next weekend! You'll do great! Just don't ever ever give up even when you doubt yourself.

@@esquero I know I am not the intended person but thank you for this response as it motivated me as well. I basically started taking photos late December and trying to build my portfolio to book clients. I did a couple shoots free for friends and family but still need more exposure. I am more introverted so I get extremely nervous or experience imposter syndrome when I am asked how much I would charge to do a shoot. But I am pushing myself to be confident in myself.

I’m a professional at this point by that I just mean this is my career. I still shoot for free when I’m trying to add something to my portfolio or if it’s a niche I wanna break into where I have nothing to show for yet. I meet a lot of people with bad attitudes who are in their first year and think that they should never have to do anything for free and clients should just be falling in their lap. Don’t be like that, be grateful for every dollar you get to make as an ARTIST. And give back as much as you can.

Probably one of the humblest and more real and encouraging video have seen about getting in this business. I myself I’m facing all that and more. Starting from scratch, following my long time passion or trying to turn it from a hobby to something real and full time, after 16 years working corporate, felt like it’s time to put my work force on something mine. Took the chance that I moved to other country and started to pursuit my dream. My previous job allowed me to have some commercial vision that makes me keep my feet on the ground and know this is not an easy business but it’s nice to see inspiring videos such as this one from someone that traced that path and shares some of the formulas to help us getting there.

I think this is the best 'how to become a photographer' video I have seen. It felt real and like the advice came from a place of knowledge rather than 'just what everyone wants'. This has actually inspired me to photograph more and worry less about the money and more about the experience and what I have to learn.

I am an automotive photographer, I really sympathize with going above and beyond for my clients.... I have clients that have literally stated that the reason they don't try new photographers is because I treat them well... I surprise loyal clients with posters of their cars, I feature them at events when we have our booth setup, and as a Canadian, I always ask if they want a Tims (if ya know then you know) ... This is absolutely KEY!! Great advice and great video

Question for you! How do you deal with people telling others that you will do photo jobs for them for free? The problem I find with shooting for free is that the next time an opportunity comes up, because you are known to do photography for free, people expect it for free and when you tell them pricing then the opportunity can disappear… Thanks for your help!

Whenever I shoot for free I strictly state that I’m doing it for the occasion and portfolio experience. If someone else develops the expectation I find a kind word and the honest truth to be helpful. Most of the models I’ve done for learning portrait and expressing my ideas were asking for free and for a bit I lost a few when I’d state no, but I found tailoring expectations and telling people where I’m at is important.
@livefrom631
@livefrom631 Жыл бұрын
Great question we all have asked but if we're being honest- we already know the answer. Truth is, we have to be honest & now say that you are charging X price for the project. Problem is, we're scared of sending that message. Truth is, we have to eventually be fine with missing out on opportunities by not doing it for free being it is no longer *sustainable*. A very important word Eric used in this video I learned late in my career.
@livefrom631
@livefrom631 Жыл бұрын
Another piece of advice is, whenever I do free work, I quote the project & put in a contract telling a client: I will be doing XYZ providing XYZ deliverables, which is priced at X amount; however, I will be doing it for free. Then, next time someone reaches out, let's say it's the same thing, now you tell them that's the price. If it's something different, quote them differently. Does that make sense? If not sorry lol feel free to ask me more questions

Clicking on this video was an accident, but I'm so glad that I did the thing that stood out for me was "get bored and create" as someone who is always trying to consume, being bored feels weird, like I'm not productive enough, I'm not living life to the fullest, yet I lack the creative space to just think. "Shoot for Free" Whenever I hear a photograp[her saying you should NOT shoot for free, I know they have never been in the business. Shooting for free is how most fashion photographers, editorial photographers, and commercial photographers get started. Every single successful photographer I have ever known has shot for free. Shooting for free sometimes means shooting for access, or shooting for exposure, or shooting for the love of a great project. There is a difference between shooting for free and being taken advantage of, but that's on you as the photographer. I rarely find real voices in the tubes, ones who have walked the walk. Spot on.

Good stuff here - I cant emphasize enough the power of partnering with other creators as well. I do it for free because of the marketing impact it can have(it has to be strategic and with purpose). I don't consider it giving away my services - i consider it adding value to my brand. I have also got some of my best repeat clients by proposing a free shoot to show them what I am capable of. It has lead to multiple re-occurring photo shoots. It has to be for brand/portfolio building or have a purpose. Free marketing has lead to more business than anything else.

I've watched tons of photography career videos in the past and I have to say that this might be the best one I have ever seen. Especially like the bit about shooting for free. Love it! 🍻

Nice video. 1. The black square thingy background is intriguing to me. Can you tell more about it!! What's that? 2. And your room tour, editing setup, editing start to finish process.
