I wonder how this masterpiece of reality failed to evoke much deserved attention including the comments which it ought to have received. Truth told wonderfully.

If I understand this lecture and forgive me if I'm wrong Fromm is using his knowledge of psychology to frame nationalism as a form of group narcissism (which I can now spell thanks to him) which prohibits rationalism and gives rise to hatred. And that it is a worse type of narcissism, malevolent narcissism, because the group is proud of what it is rather than anything is has done. So the purpose of the lecture is to argue that reason through humanism is the way forward and not nationalism which promotes the opposite. Appreciate any comments. :)

i think people have predispositions and others for just kicks wanna disagree, we need a context, not just an opinion, i think thats what education is for,and we do an injustice for being elite and narrow minded. I bumped into frommes books and that was O K as i like differant opinions AND historical context.

reasoning is a psychological defence for arguing that motive for narcism is not yourself but logically the only way, usually the scapegoat is that "if i would not do it somebode else would have" or there is a competition so...

I the present anthropocenic time, we are released by FROMM transcendental humanistic thinking...His Person and Awakenesss are so greatest as his endless humanistic understanding and vision that we all should know to distinct not only as Genius communicating the nacistic tipping point from one individual or social aspect but perhaps the most relevant Visionar of our human nature...The urgent acknowledge of Fromm's utterly realistic way of perception and apprehension of our personal responsibility in our days. Thank You for posting🎉❤

Thank you for the post... Here in Catalonia (Spain) we are suffering from This. Not only about our classical spanish "national-catholicism" nationalism, but for the last few years about a majoritarity sector of the so called "independents" who wants to separate Catalonia from the rest of Spain. Also at european levels there are rising again phantoms and ghosts from the past. I hope we could someday be able to see our differences as and act of enrichment and in the human diversity one of our strenghts as human beings. I thought we all had enough of these with the "short 20th century" ... Patriotism (and nationalism) is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

i enjoy all the generic right wingers banging on about gulags because they were triggered by nationalism being commented on. They tell us to know our history and yet do not realise Erich Fromms politics or actions. He was not supportive of Stalin and was not in a communist party. He was in the old Socialist Party of America. Which was a completely different thing.

If interested let me explain..We are not from (nature/god), we are OF (nature.god)..however, in order to have a sense of being unique and separate from the whole, we are gifted an ego. The purpose of the ego is to give us a sense of being separate from the whole...yet it is that illusionary belief of being separate that is the cause of our fear of death..we therefore, to protect our self, will doing anything to make our illusionary self identify as powerful as possible, with money, authoritive powers and even belonging to a powerful group as part of our self identity... that is the purpose of nationalism..........we are actually the individualized expression of the whole, each given a talent to express to it's infinite, as life/god is infinite......nationalism is of the ego..culture is of nature...

Fromm talks for a good while about the psychological meaning and underpinnings of narcissism, then explains how nationalism is a form of "group narcissism." I can't help but think of the downfall of the left wing in American politics; for the longest time they have been pragmatists, but have warped into a tyrannical, narcissistic counterpart to the right wing. Both sides are so engrossed in their own "correctness" and "moral superiority" that they fail to engage in calm, public discourse. Who will be truly progressive and steer away from violence if not the more scientific and pragmatic political party? Do we have to continue in this downward spiral of miscommunication and narcissism? I know a lot of Critical Theorists like Fromm would say we're pretty much doomed, and if we don't start communicating like adults, I feel it's likely we'll prove them right.

Admittedly, I stopped listening at 8:30 because Fromm was clear that he was presenting a negative view of nationalism ... but isn't Israel one of the most "nationalistic" countries in the world (Fromm is Jewish) ... if not the most nationalistic, even in 1962? This seems like more of the typical hypocrisy where all Western countries are told that they should surrender their cultures and way-of-life to outsiders, while, at the same time, Israel remains staunchly Jewish in their national makeup and culture ... that is to say, only Israel can exercise nationalism.

He was born to Jewish parents. Anyway being Jewish, doesn't lead to the conclusion that he supports the state of Israel.
@masterblaster2626
@masterblaster2626 2 жыл бұрын
@@danieldavis5376 I agree ... it doesn't necessarily mean that Fromm was an Israeli nationalist, but there is a strong correlation between Jewish people and an allegiance to Israel ... I think that we can agree on that. The issue is that he was a member of the Frankfurt School for some time (I think that he got booted out for some reason) and the Frankfurt School was well known for their sensitivity to anti-semitism. Why, Horkheimer and Adorno wrote a number of books, perhaps most notably, the Authoritarian Personality that criticized much of Western Christian culture as possibly leading to anti-semtism. Even Freud (not a member as far as I know) stated that inhibiting sexual urges could lead to anti-semitism. This paranoia about anti-semitism is easily projected onto the allegiance and loyalty to the state of Israel. All of that to say that, although correlation is not causation, but it ain't nothing, either!
