One more nugget of info that you will want to check is that the dishwasher water inlet solenoid-valve is not clogged. They can get internally get clogged with hard water deposits preventing you from having your dishwasher from filling high enough to perform ample water circulation. If you have done everything else, buy a new one and compare the fill times. The filling is done with a timer, and not by a float so if it is clogged, it will not fill in time and your dishes will not come out clean.

12 years and I'm just cleaning mine for the 1st time. We pre-wash before we load dishes so underestimated the damage that could be done by hard water - ours is extremely high in minerals. It is a caulky, gunky mess. Lots of CLR soaking going on right now. Get to it early, I'll never overlook regular maintenance again!

Great video. Helped me a lot. I really benefited from the advice to check the little rubber flappers that the top rack plugs into. In my case one flapper had broken off and thankfully I found it. The other flapper seems flimsy. So I took that assembly apart, very easy to do. Then I traced around the flapper "gasket" on a cottage cheese lid. I cut out only one hole since we use only the upper position. I put it back together in such a way that the remaining flapper never goes into the water stream. This completely plugged the lower hole. Now the upper rack works better than it ever has.

Thanks for the video. I was thinking of getting a new dishwasher to replace our 11 year old kitchenaid but decided to try cleaning it first. Easy instructions to follow. I cannot thank you enough for posting this (and a part 2)!! I was literally so delusional for imagining I could do this without help, but you made it possible. I probably watched this 5x and the part where your kid says “the brush” kills me. Too cute. TMI but our dishwasher was NOT cleaning efficiently before, and even though I also had to order a new chopper and figure out how to install that too (I actually cried haha) and this whole process took two days and multiple tries… it was all worth it when the dishes came out sparkling like they’re supposed to. I also now feel confident I can clean this annually without panicking and paying $$$. Grateful!!!!!

Mine would not even run, Shut off after about 5 minutes. Found a piece of spaghetti clogging one of the passage ways on that thingy around the food chopper. Put it back together and worked like a champ. Thank you very much!

I know this is 2 years old but I have the same issue with a broken shaft on the chopping blade. When you replaced yours, did it work fine? Because I have the impression that on mine, the fact that the blade stopped working it rounded the “the teeth” on the motor end that spin the blade because when I inserted the new blade, it was spinning freely and I saw it was sliding over the teeth on the motor. Just wondering if I might need to replace the motor. I put it all back and although it’s working better, it’s still not cleaning properly.

Thank you so much for this tutorial!!! I followed your directions and cleaned the kitchenaid dishwasher in the house I just bought and I am so glad I did because it was SO disgusting. Mold, pink sludge, pet hair 🤢. Couldn’t have done it without this video! Tip for others - the caps on my top rack did not pop out that easy (I must have a different model) so I googled it and found a suggestion to use a screwdriver and poke it in the release the clips. It worked!

Fixed my kitchenaid because of your vid. The two little rubber plugs in the back broke off and got lodged in the back tube. The water could not get to the top rack. Ordered a new tube. Works perfectly with two new rubber valves. Thank you!

Awesome instructions video! I was thinking that I needed a new pump after ruling out other possible reasons why my dishwasher was not cleaning well anymore. Found your video. I went ahead and followed your easy instructions and got it done. I did perform one extra step; I opened the screen filter which un-snapped easily and removed lots of 8 year old crud. Yuck! Very helpful, There are other steps where I found the most build up. The top spinner (small white plastic spinner) can be easily disassembled as well as the double jets on the back of the dishwasher that have the height adjustment outlets .(The double rubber blockers can we heated and moulded back so they close this way you can use both the lower and higher setting for the top rack) The most dirt and soap build up was under the main part at the bottom (after you remove the 4 screws) the fine mesh cover actually is easy to disassemble and of course the crap in the area that holds the chopping blade had numerous pieces including plastic wrapping that is used in some of the soaps that are liquid or solid. Those type of soap are a bad idea as the blade does not seem to chop the plastic to pass them through to the sewer.

My man! I have a KA model exactly like this one in those tub guts, and I’ve been disassembling to clean it (we bought the house recently with dishwasher installed)-nasty findings. At any rate, the wretched macerator cover had probably never been removed, so I encountered said “treat” you described. At a loss for how to remove it, I searched and found your video-thank you! I used a pick and screwdriver at same time to take maserator cover off without breaking it. Lift with pick while pushing clip with screwdriver (I think it was pushing inward on clip). Thanks for vid.

Question: I noticed that the lower wash arm assembly in my Kitchen Aid dishwasher spins freely but makes contact at the back of the dishwasher with the riser that carries water to the spray nozzle for the upper rack. after removing the grinder cover screw, just lift up from the left and it comes right out. no prying or destroying of clips on the right necessary.

it has one screw on it and due to hardwater it can be very difficult to remove. once the screw is out, you may have to pry it out with two thin screwdrivers. some have a plastic clip to lock it in so just be careful. If you cannot get it out with ease, you may have to use wise-force... E

Use a flexible bottle brush instead of a hanger. Each of those metal lower sprayers pops off easily for cleaning. Cholesterol check, lol.

The blade cover can be easily removed by using a long nose plier to pull on the protruding tap at top of the cover.
