I think hangman doesn't need a redemption arc. Redemption arc are for villians and bad guys that turn good. Hangman is not villan or bad guy, he's a soldier and a naval avaitor that in a moments notice will be ready to sacrifice his life for his country. Yes, he's cocky and even over-confidence, but his the only pilot in the team except for maverick that has confirmed air to air kill. Even during training maverick admitted that he's very good. So my point is that since he's neither villan or bad guy ( he doesn't even come close to being a bad guy) he doesn't need a redemption arc. But overall WONDERFUL reaction though.

Bob was my favorite in this movie. He was awkward, didn't act or speak like a badass, and wore his shirt on during the beach scene, but then did his job perfectly in the end. What a great reaction! So much emotion! So I'm one of those guys so saw the original in 1986 when I was 16 years old and had been waiting 36 years for this sequel. Of course I had *massive* expectations and was nervous it wouldn't live up to them... But the wait was worth it! One of the best sequels of all time! Back in 1986 I was in the Air Cadets (in Canada) studying to be a pilot, so Top Gun is pretty near and dear to my heart- Top Gun: Maverick hit all the right notes! The call backs to the original were obvious but didn't come off as forced or cliché. A friend of mine said it best- "It's like Top Gun grew up!" Loved your reaction!

Great reaction and such a great movie! The amusing thing for me that almost no one seems to get is that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been in this era of single seat warplanes. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, who was his conscience in some ways, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too. In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that. In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying. The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to prepare them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit hosed out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time. The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast. Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie. Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe he can go out doing what he loves before that is taken away from him too. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit. In a Hollyweird full of shallow and dull movies and shows with shallow, poorly done scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow, unrealistic characters who only change in shallow ways if at all, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen.

Although the scene is only choppily shown here, in the actual movie the most emotional moment for me was when the missiles are coming at them and Rooster runs out of flares and is basically a sitting duck, but then out of nowhere you see Mav pull up above him to send out flares to save him but then Mav himself gets hit. The strength of that older, wise generation of pilot, looking out for the younger ones. Gah, it hit so hard, I just lost it at that point. 7:16 Actually, by law Navy captains who are not selected for promotion to admiral must retire at 30 years of service. There are a handful of scenarios in which Maverick might have gotten around this; the most straightforward explanation would be that he was enlisted before becoming an officer, or there was a break in his service and he did time in Naval Reserve. Finally, he could have retired, but was retained in service; it's a rare, but not impossible, scenario which keeps individuals in uniform after statutory retirement.

Four F-4D Phantoms from the Kansas Air National Guard took off from a runway we could not see, and flew over the enormous crowd at over 600 knots and maybe 200 feet altitude. I cannot describe to you the noise and the shock wave that slammed into everyone as the jets flew over us. I caught sight of them a split second before they were they passed over us, without any sound, as the sound wave did not reach us until about one second later. The noise alone was powerful and completely overwhelming. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if they had had bombs to drop as well.

This run gets even more crazy when you consider their max ceiling is 100 feet. The F-18 wingspan is just under half that and they are flying through these canyons at speed which means their wings are more or less pointing straight up the whole time with 30 feet of clearance to a side. It’s literally like threading a needle that’s fighting back.

Even in the 1980s or 1990s, pilots from the Federal Air Force (Germany) were in the USA for low-level flight training. During a telephone conversation, one of the German pilots said that he was afraid of training. Normally this is not a common thing to do to relatives. This pilot was an experienced pilot but low flying is extremely demanding and requires constant practice. According to him, the US pilots had multiple levels of experience through multiple training sessions. During training, the German pilot crashed and was killed. This happens when you think that the training, among other things... is “too loud” and is therefore severely restricted. It means the death of people/pilots. The blink of an eye at a height of up to just 10 meters and a speed of around 800 km/h means the difference between life and death.

The movie goes through Maverick being put in similar situations from his time in the Service so he can reconcile his mistakes before crossing into the afterlife

It is the only nation, apart from the US, that operates the F-14 Tomcat. They bought them during the reign of the Shah, before the islamic revolution in 1979 and still operate them to this day. They are also very heavily involved in getting a nuclear program for their ballistic missiles set up. So, while it is a great movie on the surface, if you dig a little deeper, it also addresses real world events.

@7:20 "Would that effect your body?" There are a couple commentaries on YT by former Air Force and Navy pilots (triggered by this scene) that indicate ejecting unprotected from an aircraft traveling near even Mach II would likely rip your limbs off and cause all kinds of other likely fatal trauma. The SR-71 Blackbird, on which this hypothetical "Darkstar" aircraft is loosely based (and I believe the Space Shuttle as well) apparently both ejected the pilot/crew in a protective capsule that enabled ejection at speeds up to Mach III. Ejecting at Mach Ten though and surviving? I'm skeptical but I guess the argument could be made he slowed before ejecting/disintegrating.

Considering the altitude and the way his canopy was peeling away, I think it's safe to say that Maverick dies in the opening.

@@LordVolkov I'm no engineer or pilot, but I tend to agree. Oh well, suspension of disbelief is an important part of enjoying most movies.

The SR-71 had no escape capsule. The crew ejected in their seats and relied on the pressure suit to protect them. The ejection was far more dangerous for the backseater than the pilot, though. The Blackbird was originally designed as a single-seat plane, and getting a backseater to eject from his spot in the fuselage without breaking his neck upon entering the windstream was never fully tested through.

Yeah, there were a few times I had allergy attacks watching this. (I mostly get watery eyes when my allergies flare up.) 😁 Great reactions there!

32:53 Just look at that chest of medals and ribbons. Maverick may be cocky and impulsive but he is very brave and very good at what he does.

43:04 Glenn Powell who plays Hangman actually played a similar role in the historic movie Devotion Fun fact he and Ed Harris who plays Admiral Caine have both portrayed astronaut John Glenn

So Maverick couldn’t let go of the fact that he feels responsible for Goose . ICE also feels like he’s responsible cus he is the one that cut them off , so I feel like Ice has always looked out after maverick

I just discovered y'all very early this morning and I've already watched a handful of your reactions enjoying each one. The smiles from you two say it all. The commentary back and forth between y'all is top notch and doesn't take away from the video/movie, and the editing is great as well. I've subscribed and look forward to catching up on older reactions as well as seeing new ones, joining y'all on your journey. Best wishes from Texas! 🙂

i dont think the "assholy" officer, is doing it out of spite, he genuily cares about his men , probably has lost some aling the way under his command or while he was under someone else, you can hear his voice breake a little bit after mav gets shot down hes hurting because one of his own died under his command and he know he can do jackshit about it
