Why does everyone cycle the key like that? When you turn the key on with a cold engine the glow plugs stay on up to two minutes after the light goes out. Complete waste of time. When it's 0 or below I wait up to 30 seconds after the light goes out and start it up. Never failed me yet. If you don't believe it watch your volt gauge on a cold start, it will be in the basement until the glow plugs shut off. 5w-40 is the only oil to use in this engine especially in the cold. I also don't drive away until the high pressure pump stops whining. That's another clue of thick oil and lack of lubercation. 7.3s are great engines

As 1DirtyMutt stated, the WTS light does not indicate when your Glow Plug Relay is activated. It is more of an "idiot" light ... like the oil pressure gauge on your dash (it reads either yes or no to oil pressure). If you watch your voltmeter when you first turn your key to the KOEO position, you'll notice the voltmeter reading drops as the GPR energizes the Glow Plugs. This cycle can last as long as 2 minutes depending on the outside ambient temperature. The colder it is ... the longer the GPR will stay on energizing the GPs. Also, you are cutting your crank cycle WAY too short. Try cranking for between 6-10 seconds. (yup the manual states up to 30 seconds before you harm the starter). 6-10 seconds will not hurt your starter and chances are, it'll fire up much earlier. By you turning the key on and off quickly, you are simply terminating and resetting the GP warming cycle unnecessarily. BTW - Archoil does work well when you follow the instruction properly.

Any diesel at the cold temperatures would have a hard time starting so running the glow plugs the way you did was good for ignition. When it started a smoothly as it did "no misfires" means the archoil helped with stiction issues. I put archoil 9100 in the freezer and it turned into molasses... not against the product but anything up north in cold weather it doesn't matter.

Having owned 7 Ford diesels, starting with a 1988 IDI - you don't know how to start a diesel truck. I have started Ford diesels in temperatures down to -14 F without the block heater, and NEVER had to try more than two (2) starting cycles. You have to CRANK the engine to build pressure in the injectors and preheat the cylinders. Crank the damn thing for at least 20 seconds on the first starting cycle. It should start on the second try if you do that.

Even with Archoil it needs cranking time to build up to 500psi of injection pressure. Add cold oil to the equation and negative temps you'll need about 5 seconds of cranking before it'll even begin to actuate the injectors. 6 Minutes of glow plugs probably just heated the oil in the galleries and thus allowed it to fire with less crank time. Your truck though, treat it as you discern best.

Your glow plugs will heat for 2 min when they are turned on. Constantly cycling the key and trying to start at very cold temps just wears out they ignition switch and takes longer to finally heat the cylinders Chambers. If you are having problems in those temps after a minute or so after the start light shuts off, Then you would probably have a glow plug system failure. Plug it though. You won't beat the hell out of you injectors as much as a cold start can. Archoil will also save you a ton of money by extending the life of you injectors and all other friction parts in your diesel engine. I'll have to try some off that oil slickening compound next. I get impatient and usually wait for one minute at those temps and mine fire right up. I used Revx with same result as Archoil and am now trying out Turbo Maxx with more friction reducer additive. It seems the same though it works good and should be protecting and stabilizing the oil a bit longer.

do you need to cycle the key so much? on my diesels the wait to start will go out but the relay is still on for a good while after unless the key is turned. i do run self limiting glows to avoid swelling. this is on a gm6.2 and mercedes benz om617. i much prefer the grid heaters on my 12valve cummins. seems to always start better in the cold.

Everything I have ever seen or been told is yes you have to cycle the key so it resets. It won't just keep heating up. I am at 234000 miles on the truck and the plan is to replace all the glow plug items this summer. Relay, glow plugs, injectors, and wiring harness. That way I know I am as good as it can get.

Eric's Projects The PCM determins if the plugs are activated (obviously in your conditions they are) and for how long. Even though the light only lasts seconds on the dash, the glow plugs are activated for upwards of two minutes. There's no need to cycle. You can install an LED anywhere in the truck to monitor the relay's activation/deactivation (or monitor voltage).

after having five powerstrokes I finally got rid of all their b******* in 05. I bought a Dodge with a Cummins in it 4x4 I have yet to have this truck fail on me yet. it's a one ton and it gets used hauling 20,000 plus pounds regularly. the power strokes never made it to a hundred thousand miles without serious and expensive damn injector work, EGR, oil cooler. and the list goes on and on. so far after 12 years with the Cummings I have replaced a water pump and a serpentine belt is all I've replaced other than batteries Brakes and Tires. I'm also a mechanic so I've never taking my truck to a Dodge dealer but once and that was enough. I guess I can drive it for another 10 or 12 years before I have any real problems. good luck with that Ford you're going to need it
