Thank you so much for this video. My exhaust rattles had been driving me crazy for months and I was unable to see anything that was loose. The technique of smacking along the pipe with the palm of my hand was the key to finding the loose heat shield above the catalytic converter. It was in a very inaccessible area and because the welds on the lower shield were still very solid I never suspected the upper shield. One hose clamp on each end of the converter did the trick. My truck is now blissfully quiet. Thanks again for taking the time to post this video.

THANK YOU!!! I have a 2004 HONDA CRV. Took it to two mechanics... None of which could locate the rattle or even think of what the cause would be. One told me a nut or bolt was in the engine! Other one said it was normal- now I can do it myself! I cant say how much I appreciate you sharing this!!! Time to get dirty and sweat of 100 lbs in the Florida humidity today!!!

So I went to the Ford repair center and the only problem they found with my car was that there was a rattle caused by a exhaust bracket. I'm sure they would charge $100 plus to fix this so I thought I would fix it myself. I have literally been waiting for an ETCG vid about rattling exhaust systems and after seeing this I now have the confidence to do it myself. Christmas came early! Thanks Eric the car guy!

Just used this advice to fix exhaust rattles on my car :) Those noises were driving me mad... Thanks a lot Eric! I tried a lot of ways to shut it up (even welding the holder together with the exhaust) but it always didn't last long... But this solution is perfectly tight and it took me less time to apply it than getting my car lifted up :) You're my hero Eric! This video saved me a lot of nerves :)) (..sorry for my english..)

thank you Eric!! I didn't think of going underneath and banging around either lol. (of course when it's cool)

Thank you so much for this vid Eric. I've listened to my Dad's truck make the rattling pie pan noise at idle and coming to a stop for almost 2 years now. Thanks to your vid I was able to convince him to let me crawl under his baby with some hose clamps and fix it in 5 minutes. It's a small thing, but it always drove me nuts seeing him pull up to my garage in his polished baby and hearing that stupid rattle. He'll let me wrench on every other machine he has, but not his truck. Finally it's as quiet as that gleaming cream puff should be. Now if I could just get him to risk scratching the bed liner by hauling a pillow or really any thing in it.

Wow Thanks Eric. I had been hearing that same noise in my 2003 Navigator. I took it to the dealer and they said it was metal in the Catalytic Converter and they could fix it for $200. However I am a smart women and that didn't make since to me. I brought the car home and I left the car running and crawled all the way around the car trying to find out where that crazy noise was coming from. I finally heard it louder at the exhaust where it connects to something, but I could not see anything loose. Now I know!!! You just saved me $200. I will just buy the clamp or clamps and have my handyman guy put it on. Thank YOU.

I have a 03 GMC Sierra 1500 that has started making exhaust rattle noise. Found the culprit being the pipe is moving inside the upper flange connected at the header. The 2 nuts on the flange look to be tight but I know looks can be deceiving. Im trying to find time to check the torque on the nuts to see if that fixes the issue but if I find out they are tight then my question would be what would cause the pipe to move hitting the inside of the flange creating the noise and the fix for it? Thanks for all your help Eric!

I'm having this issue on my Subaru Forester. Coming from a "computer guy" background, with very little "car guy" experience behind me: Could I put some kind of silicone or thermal paste into the air gap between the pipe and the shield? Is the point of the heat shields to transfer the heat to the shields? Or maybe not so they don't cause grass fires? Just wondering why, even when you tie it down with the clamp, why is there so much air between the exhaust pipe and the shield?
