Eric this yesterday morning I fixed up the brakes on a 2004 chevy aveo for one of my neighbors, a single mother with 2 kids, I did it for free all she paid for was the parts. I got super into cars after watching your videos and fixing my own truck. I have saved a lot of money and have fixed a few peoples cars now for free or not much money at all, I enjoy doing it and thank you for the amazing videos and insipiring many people like myself to fix it forward.

Wow!! I'm guessing a majority of subscribers/viewers are DIY'ers. This is what we aspire to be able to do - but I think this type of repair separates a real mechanic from a DIY 'er. Eric, you have to be proud about this repair - almost an automotive Herculean task. This takes real mechanical talent/training/knowledge.

ERIC! I, for one, LOVE the "Ess-ee-ARRRRRR!" bit. Yeah, I know it could get old, but when you say it, it feels fresh every time. On the next FIF you should trash the original car and help fix a used one. I've never seen so many cars that weren't worth the time and money. I guess that's why the show is so great! You got stuck with three of the ugliest dance partners in the county and didn't flinch! You're a great man and much appreciated.

I just checked the Dorman part number that was listed here for the valve cover and they have changed the design of that part. That's just crazy how something that appears so insignificant can cause such trouble. Unfortunately, prices have doubled over the years and even buying wholesale, the Nissan part is twice the price. And by the way, Dorman is the ONLY aftermarket supplier that doesn't provide the cover with a PCV valve. They never cease to amaze.

I'm about to replace the valve cover on my wife's '05 Altima and was really worried b/c I bought the Dorman valve cover, similar to the one you had issues with here. I'm glad I watched this video b/c I looked over my part and it looks like Dorman has revised their design (at least on this one) and the front oil return tube has been narrowed down closer to factory spec!

+keith kennedy It's worth mentioning that synthetics are far less prone to becoming acidic, but your filter will break down internally after about a year anyhow. So if you have a summer vehicle or something an annual oil change is wise regardless of mileage or the oil used.

As a Subaru owner, OEM parts all the way, even OEM fluids because the 5mt & heater core are picky (aside from the rotella T6). Water pump is behind the timing belt so it's a "while you are in there" item too. whenever installing fasteners into plastic, I use a torque wrench, maybe overkill/over cautious, but worth the piece of mind. I love those hi-viz sockets btw.

Great as ever Eric, but the fix on the MAF trunking was just fine with good quality electrical tape. When you added the fabric tape it just made the whole thing solid and just likely to split it again, or at the ends when the thing is actually running.
@BobPegram
@BobPegram 9 жыл бұрын
+cfook Have to say I agree. The trunking is not made like an accordion for looks, the engine rocks back and forth and the other end is from the body. The best thing I can think of is a special electrical tape that bonds to itself, either over time or with heat applied (memory fails me here). Wrap it around twice and you should be good.

think about it if our buy OEM all the time and you car buy the time all those year go buy i rather aftermarket i gets expensive and if you go the dealer it cost 120 an hour for a mechanic that can do the same job buy the end of that it gets expensive it probably be the original price of the car for OEM and sometime there is problems with oem that the aftermarket part fixes.

29:30 - Hey Eric, I would recommend 3M Linerless Electrical Rubber Tape in applications like that. It's pretty great stuff, it's like electrical tape, but instead of having adhesive on one side the rubber the tape is made out of, when slightly stretched, actually fuses to itself (and never comes apart). If you wrap it tight around something it's almost like a huge heat shrink tube, it would be perfect in this situation with no worries of oil or grime making it come loose over the years. What you did is fine by the way, but I just wanted to bring up the linerless tape because it's great.

That Amsoil is going to start cleaning out that varnish pretty quickly. Probably important to change it relatively often the first few oil changes. Like 3000-4000 miles, instead of the 12000 like it looks like it was probably changed.
@February54
@February54 9 жыл бұрын
+Clearanceman2 I think that varnish is from the owner forgetting about a regular oil change and going in at 8-10k haha
@Clearanceman2
@Clearanceman2 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was my point. Amsoil being high end synthetic oil, it's going to start cleaning that stuff out. Friend neglected oil changes so I put Wally World full synthetic and a good oil filter. 3 weeks later, the oil is already black. And it will be like that the next several oil changes at least. Valvoline maxlife full synthetic really seems to clean out even more. Just got to watch and not overwhelm the oil filter.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 9 жыл бұрын
+Clearanceman2 The bigger problem, in my experience, is that the synthetic is going to clean all of the sludge out that was sealing the oil in. Anything I've ever seen that was more than a few years old and then switched to synthetic started leaking within a few months. Synthetic since new or synthetic never is my opinion.
@ericthecarguy

+Clearanceman2 Not necessary and also expensive in my opinion. Even with conventional oil you can go 4-5K.

Probably right. I just keep my cars forever, one has 297,000 the other 255,000 so I do whatever I can to extend the life. For the average driver I'm sure it makes no difference. But I would say that car's oil in the video could have been changed more often.

+zx8401ztv It looked like the gaiter was part of the moulding...Bad design I think, or just a way for Nissan to make more money from their car owners?

+inspirality When i say gaiter, i mean the air tube. The seals may be part of the rockerbox cover, but i cant see it really. Its still a bit mean to make someone buy a whole rockerbox cover just for some poxey seals ;-(

Before you even put that aftermarket one on I was like you should always go oem with nissan I use to have issues with aftermarket coil packs as soon as I bought the oem ones boom purring like a kitten. You do great work but I would of never put that aftermarket timing kit on either!

+trigga ville - The noise surprised me as well, sounded like she was royally pooched. But when he discovered the reason why, I wasn't surprised at all. Every Dorman part I've ever bolted onto an engine or used on a vehicle, I've had to replace.

making electricity , funny over there Eric . It's the reason why I avoid after market parts as well , in regards to the valve cover problem , might cost a little more but the genuine l parts are always the better option .

+commodore665 Not always. The aftermarket often addresses manufacturer design flaws long before the OEs get to it. The best thing to do is research what the best option is before making a purchase.

I've used the Dorman lower control arms for my G35 and Volvo and they are pretty reliable. But, I would go OEM with certain electrical connectors, valve covers, and critical engine parts on Nissan/Infiniti's. Nissan really shafts you though when it comes to their valve covers. Some people use a hole saw and drill out old spark plug seals and then RTV in some replacement ones. It's worth a shot at least, since two new valve covers on my G35 will run about 500 bucks....

There were a lot of problems with certain after market valve covers. Many often caused oil burning issues due to blocking the pathways to allow proper pcv function.

+Tim Johnson I like NGK plugs because they are usually easier to find than Denso plugs. Many Japanese car companies will have a note in the user's manual that reads like: Use this NGK part number or use this Denso part number. Also, I replace Autolite, Bosch, and Champion plugs without a problem. On newer GM cars, the ACdelco spark plug is often a NGK with different labels on them. Sometimes they are priced differently, so I get whatever is cheapest. I find it fascinating that after using Bosch for ages, VW and Audi used NGK plugs. They still use Bosch for most of their alternators, starters, and EFI components.

Agreed, sometimes OEM is the way to go. Just like rear main seals on most cars. Once I R&R'd a trans because of a non oem rear main. Once.

I had a 1990 Ford Probe with a cracked intake air hose. I tried the same fix, electrical and duct tape but after a few times driving it it started to suck the tape into the crack. It also had the vane airflow meter, which I'm sure takes more air force to move the door inside the sensor. Also having that tube cracked would cause it to die while in gear at a stoplight. Luckily my uncle owned a shop at the time and was able to get me a new hose at his price.
