Eric, My 2005 Odyssey stranded my wife last night. Watched your video while waiting for AAA to send the tow truck to take the van home. Got to AutoZone at 7:30 this morning when they opened. Bought a starter and borrowed a breaker bar from them ($25 refundable deposit!). Gathered up my other tools based on your video and was done in about 90 minutes. Great video. Clear instructions and hints (bend that tab on the battery tray!) made the whole job go smoothly. THANKS! Tom

May God bless you and protect you in everything that you do Eric!! You're an inspiration to all of us poor broke wanna be Joe Schmo mechanic man, them car garage shops out there are nothing but thieves, they're going to hate on you Eric by saying that you are taking their jobs away from them by posting auto repair videos like this on KZbin and guess what? Between parts and labor, that was a good $750+ job too and you're putting it right back in our pockets and l LOVE IT.

Thank you very much! You saved me $250 in labor cost. I bought a starter online for $85, watched your video a few times, and almost exactly two hours later...fixed and running. I am not a mechanic, but after successfully completing this simple job I will certainly try more wrenching in the future. The only tool I wish I had would be a ratcheting wrench for that hard to reach bolt. My Oddy has 178K miles and this is the 2nd replacement starter.

Many thanks for the excellent guide. It ended up taking me three hours to replace our starter just now, but about 45 minutes of that was trying to break loose the bottom bolt on the starter, which had rusted tight, and I had no breaker bar. I thought for awhile there that I was going to be putting off the second half of the operation while I took a bus to and from the nearest store I could get one, but some kludging with a broom handle ended up saving the day. This is the second video of yours I've used to replace something at home, and I anticipate more to come.

Thanks again! This took about one hour to remove and about 1/2 hour to replace. The crux of this job is being able to get sufficient torque on those starter hold-down bolts. I have a 3 ft pipe that slips over my ratchet so it will either break the bolt loose or break the ratchet. This is a great thing. I'd like to start a helpful series of videos, but nobody needs to know how to build lasers or cut your finger-tips off in a table saw!

Eric, thank you for this, I just did my starter today on my 2007 Honda odyssey touring. 2 things I want to point out to others is: 1. Everything Eric said needs to be taken out of the way, does in fact need to be removed.... Don't try to skip any of it because it will just take longer... Trust me on this... And number 2 is the 2007 models and later have a different starter and different connections that are harder to get to.... However everything else is that same.

Thank you for this video. The starter on our 06 Odyssey went out Friday, and Sunday I was able to remove/replace it Sunday thanks to this video. As you and others have said, that bottom bolt on the starter is no joke. I probably spent more time dealing with a broken socket extension than with the starter work. There's no telling how much money you saved me, and I hope you make 5 times that back from clicks and ad revenue.

Awesome video that made this job so much easier...thank you Eric! The only trouble I experienced was my lack of tools and had to improvise. Make sure you have a long wrench for the low bolt on the battery mount and some socket wrench extensions to make everything quick. Just watch the video and make sure you have the same tools Eric is using or something close. Thank you again for making this video, great details and tips!!

Eric, you're a real pro! This is one of the best technically-oriented videos I've watched. You are thorough, informative, articulate....generally excellent. I'm subscribing to your channel straight away. I thought my wife's 99 Odyssey needed a neutral safety switch because I could get the van to start by wiggling the gear selector. I installed the neutral safety switch and it worked....for about 12 hours. Then it became obvious something else was wrong. Wish I would have watched this before getting shafted by the local Honda dealer. Ouch!

Eric....thank you thank you thank you...after breaking down in a parking lot of Toy R Us with my kids and wife...I watched your video while waiting for AAA. Since you did the exact vehicle I have it was something i had to try. I won't lie. Without your video it would not have been possible. The bending down the metal flap..."its just metal", lol I would have stopped there if it weren't for your thorough video. It still took me two hours to do it, bug mainly because I kept referencing your video and I broke a tool and went out to bbuy a breaker bar since I ddidn't follow that advice of your earlier...again, thank you you are legitimate. Great video.

Dear Erik, a good alternative than grease on terminals is to coat it from outside (after tightening) with Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. Please rebuild the old starter as all it needs is only cleaning or replacing a copper piece in the solenoid only + cleaning the armature contact grooves + re-greasing the motor bearings and solenoid arm and it became as new. Thanks you Erik for such an informative video as always.

Thanks, Eric! Just replaced the starter on my 2006 Odyssey today. Your video was a lifesaver. I agree with another comment... showing the removal of all the fasteners was critical for my success. Had to go buy a breaker bar for those 17mm bolts, but other than that, it went pretty well, all considered!

Thanks. Good camera angles. Very helpful. Not replacing the starter, but needed to know how to access the positive cable to starter from below. (Keys only fit ignition, not door locks, so fob is the only way into the vehicle - but the battery drained last night so I need to momentarily "boost" the car to get the remote control receiver powered to recognize the fob unlock command and pop the doors. Then, I'll be in and able to pop the hood. What a PITA.)

Eric, great job as usual. The statement "easier said than done" was more than prophetic. Frankly, it kicked my butt. The one, lower, rear most bolt stressed my Navy trained vocabulary. Finally got the tray out then managed to break my 3/8th drive extension trying to get the top 17mm mounting bolt out. If I had to do it again I would have 1) purchased a long 12mm wrench such as the one you used (to use on bolt above). 2) had 1/2 inch drive extensions on hand and 3) purchased a better quality starter (not CARQUEST) considering the level of effort to change this puppy out. Considering the effort, I see why the dealers/mechanics get some coin to do this job. Thank you for the video!

This was exactly the video I needed! I watched it a couple times, made notes along the way for steps, and just finished replacing my starter. Great video, much appreciated!

Eric, Thank You for this video!!! This video was exactly the correct one for my 2005 Honda Odyssey with 91,000 miles on it. You saved us about $500- the dealer wanted to charge us $600 for the entire replacement. I replaced it with a re-manufactured starter with a lifetime warranty. I would like to mention (like you said) that the removal of the bottom bolt on that starter (17mm) was a $%##!!! Had to use a 3' cheater to break it loose. Other than that, everything went exactly as it shows. We even had to put in the radio code and it worked perfectly. Thanks Again!!

My 2005 accord with a 3.0 6cyl is not exactly the same as this video but it is very close to the same procedure. Battery tray is not as tough (the ones underneath are both slotted and just need to brk em loose and a turn or 2 passed that). Best thing is that the starter is not located under the intake manifold but on the battery side just like this odyssey. Great guide eric. You show steps and apparently edit out ur umm ummm derr statements or can speak better than many mech's. The guide does not bog down with unnecessary jarble and is easy to follow.

Awesome job on video Eric! This worked on my 2005 Odyssey also and saved me $175 labor that my mechanic wanted. I got the top starter bolt out with my impact but the bottom one wouldn't budge even with impact. Had to use my 1/2" ratchet and a 3' pipe on the handle for leverage to get it to crack loose. Finished it in about 3hrs ....would've taken the day with your video so thanks again and......Stay Dirty! :-) PS....You might want to pick up some of the Black latex gloves from Harbor Freight. They're cheap enough and being like 8-9mil., they don't tear as easily as the white ones used in you're video's.

Thanks for the walk through. Today my starter failed on my 2001 Odyssey. I'm trying to decide weather to replace it myself or get the car towed to my Honda dealership. The original starter motor lasted 221k. I think I want the replacement unit to be a guanine Honda starter motor, weather I do it myself or pay to have it done. I know my 2001 Odyssey is not the same under the hood as a 2006 Odyssey.

A couple of years ago, on my 2001 Honda Odyssey, I removed the battery mounting plate to install a Raybestos Inline Magnetic Automatic Transmission Filter on the cooling line from the transmission to the radiator. It was not difficult to remove and re-install that battery mounting plate. Two years ago I was trying to be very pro-active with my weak 2nd Gen Odyssey transmission. I installed a transmission cooler, an inline automatic transmission filter, and I also replaced 90% of the Honda ATF DW-1 Transmission Fluid with Amsoil Signiture Series Multi-Vehicle Full Synthetic ATF. The Amsoil Full Synthetic ATF has made the transmission shift more predictable and smoother. The change was very noticeable. I'm not an Amsoil salesmen.

My tips/lessons - I used a 750mm breaker bar to get the 17mm bolts loose, and my only real issue was when re-installing the tray the front bolt - literally the easiest bolt to get to, would not start no matter how much I cussed, swore, threw things (j/k) until finally it got loose and dropped underneath; 3 bolts is good enough. Total time - about 3 hours (which includes 30 minutes of swearing at the aforementioned bolt). An offset, fine-tooth, ratcheting 12mm wrench would be best for the back lower battery tray bolt (mine is course-toothed but got the job done). For reference, the car is 11 years old with 210,000 miles and was on the original starter.

good video, however, at min 5:10 you want to trash the battery tray but its there for a reason. I work for Honda R&D and we pay money to put these trays for heat management. I learned something from you video. thank you

he said he gonna dump the garbage inside the battery tray..not the tray itself.

Hello brother Eric, I have Honda Odyssey 06. Last week I was driving highway and suddenly I realized my van RPM going up n down. Then stop roadside open the hood and found transmission fluid spread all over the engine. Also found fluid are smell and dark. Then I bought 3 ATF transmission fluid then drive home around 70 miles. Then next day buy transmission fluid from dealer and others flush out. After change fluid when I was driving transmission gear misbehave. Then I don't drive for 5days. After 5 days start again now no problem running good. Even I drove 70/75 ml/h no problem. Van mileage is 155k. Should I change transmission filter and clean the solenoid valve ,put it back.? I'm not mechanic but learning from you, but I've tools and courage to do it from your inspiration. Thanks.
