Ray Watson with MooseMods.com was nice enough to take me along for a flight in the Bull Moose that he built. Normally these come stock with a radial engine, but Ray has installed an LS3 Corvette engine that sounds like a hot rod!!!

I would love to hear that. I am wondering if a supercharged LS engine could be used to recharge some batteries and a super capacitor for a small hybrid regional airliner (< 40 seats). :)

@jacobrzeszewski6527

The problem with automotive engines is the lack or redundancy. If power goes out to the ECU, that’s it. If the plane goes inverted for some reason and looses oil pressure, you’re done. If the primary ignition system looses power, ya done. If the fuel pump goes out, sayonara. Now aviation engines do have failure points, but many of those points are minimized by sacrificing horsepower for reliability. For example, by going with mechanical fuel pumps, magneto ignition, and using an extra redundant ignition system. And other fundamental features lead to a more reliable design, such as using a low RPM engine that doesn’t require a reduction gear. Many of these problems can be solved with good design and engineering, but unfortunately most experimental pilots don’t take these into consideration due to additional expenses and time involved in implementing them. An example would be using a custom cylinder head with an extra plug per cylinder, or giving each bank of cylinders its own ECU and ignition system.

I think a standard LS3 build is around 400HP and consumes at about 25GPH at 75%. This one says 480HP on the side so a full cruise might be closer to 30. Which is actually pretty good. That's like a 20% reduction in BSFC compared to your typical Lycoming/Continentals

Those engines produce enough HP I can easily afford a bit of loss by adding a good muffler Maybe more reduction and more prop blades. One problem with these engines is the single belt driving the alternator and water pump. A single point failure item. I know at least one SeaBee crashed because the alternator front bearing seized and killed the belt, then the water pump quit. It is possible to add a electric water pump to the system. The water pump can also leak.

What would be neat is to take a stock 2.7 or 3.5 liter ecoboost engine from a new F150 and mod it for aircraft. There is enough of these proven engines now with a price that would give Cont. and Lycoming some competition.

I have this question...no- statement. First of all, I really like the airplane. But- you have to realize that the whole business of "No muffler" was to maximize power-to-weight ratio. To give more power. There are indeed some airplanes that DO have mufflers and I really like the idea. Less noise, less stress on long flights, no need for the headphones to hear the person sitting right next to you.This airplane has enough power that it can well afford the little extra weight of a well-designed muffler. An engine can sound good, even REALLY good and not need to be loud.And, yes- single exhaust sounds really good on a V-8 engine. If you want something to sound like a dragster...get a dragster.But, again- very nice airplane.Now to my question. (And, I should already know this.) With an automotive engine, how do you get dual ignition?Let me guess: You don't. =PC=
