Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the real Erin Brokovich and Ed Masry make cameos in the movie. Near the beginning when Erin and her kids are in the diner. Their waitress is the real Erin, and as a joke she's wearing a nametag that says Julia. So Julia is playing Erin and Erin is playing Julia. And in same scene , the real Ed Masery is the guy reading the menu in the next booth. Thought that was pretty cool movie trivia.

Julia Roberts nailed the "pretty white girl trailer trash don't need no man" stereotype. Seen plenty of girls just like her. Very pretty, yet uncouth. 2-3 babies hanging off her hips from 2-3 different guys who can't be found. Acts strong but is secretly terrified. Says she doesn't need a man, but wishes to god one would take care of her.

Fun story about Julia Roberts. In 2002 or 03 I met Julia Roberts. She was on a USO (United Services Organization - for you Canadians that may not know, they bring entertainment to troops at home and abroad) tour with the cast of Oceans 11 right after it came out. The USO flew the whole cast out to Turkey to visit the troops. They just flew something like 15 hours out to us and immediately came to see us in this giant semi-air conditioned tent. No rest, no stretching the legs or anything. Plane, transport to the tent and a 2 hour meet and greet with the troops. Julia, the poor woman, looked like she had just been worked over by a mob bookie. Her hair was wreck, she looked like she didn't sleep the whole trip. But she was gracious, generous with her time and seemed genuinely happy to meet us all.

I want to give a huge shout-out to the absolutely brilliant Marg Helgenberger. Her performance as Donna Jensen was critical to driving home the crimes that were committed against the people of Hinkley. Donna's initial strained confidence in the PG&E b.s. is shattered by Erin's research and you read every bit of it in Marg's dawning realization. And of course her "Am I still a woman?" scene is arguably the most heartbreaking and enraging one in the film. Marg won one Emmy for her supporting role as a prostitute in the Vietnam drama series 'China Beach' roughly a decade earlier and was nominated every season it was on. That she was not nominated for a supporting Oscar for Donna Jensen will always stick in my craw. She was the embodiment of the people of Hinkley in this movie and she made you feel every bit of it. Marg is the daughter of a meat plant worker and a nurse from a tiny Nebraska town, and she perfectly portrayed an earnest and credulous good-hearted small-town mother here.

The companies and, in Flint's case, the politicians who pull this shit should be bankrupted and probably jailed for the things they do to people. PG&E has been in the news again recently due to their failing or malfunctioning equipment starting wildfires. From an article back in May from The Guardian: "In recent years, PG&E equipment set off 31 wildfires that wiped away entire towns and killed 113 people." PG&E has been subjecting American citizens to hazardous chemicals and faulty equipment that starts deadly wildfires for decades. Their stock price did take a sizeable hit after the Camp Fire in November 2018 but they're still a $40bn+ company.

The only thing that annoys me about The Pelican Brief is that in the book the male and female leads got involved sexually. The movie cast Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts... and then suddenly that subplot evaporated. Can't have a throwaway romantic scene if the leads are a black man and a white woman. Really left a bad taste in my mouth.
@TheToledoTrumpton
@TheToledoTrumpton Жыл бұрын
@@zammmerjammer Well, you have to blame Washington for that. He was the one that had it taken out. In a 2002 Newsweek profile of Washington for which Roberts was also interviewed, she said that she'd been asked numerous times why she didn't want to kiss Washington in "The Pelican Brief." She explained, "Don't I have a pulse? Of course I wanted to kiss Denzel. It was his idea to take the ... scenes out." In the same piece, Washington explained that he didn't want to alienate his predominantly Black female fanbase by showing a Black man being intimate with a white woman rather than a Black woman. "Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film," Washington said. "They have always been my core audience." From a Looper article BY NATASHA LAVENDER/JULY 9, 2021

@@TheToledoTrumpton Yeah, I still don't like it. They didn't have to show some hot & heavy sex scene -- it could have been tastefully done. This is role, and performance, that won Julia Roberts her Oscar. She deserved it, too. Albert Finney, who played Ed, is actually British and has been acting since the early 1960s. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in this (also well deserved). Peter Coyote, who played Kurt Potter (the lawyer who took over the case) does very little acting any more because he's making buckets o' money doing voice-over work. He's narrated many of Ken Burns' documentaries, among others.

It wouldn't have been apparent from his performance but Albert Finney, who played Ed Masry, was British through and through. He played American characters several times and obviously knew how. Other films of his worth watching would include "Murder On The Orient Express", " The Dresser", " Miller's Crossing", "Big Fish", and "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead". ( Not to mention a personal favorite "Scrooge" from 1970 ). It didn't come up in this reaction, but you have already seen him in "Skyfall" - his last film - as the caretaker of the Bond estate.

I just recently went on a bit of a binge of legal thrillers dealing with big corporations poisoning the public. Dark Waters (true story), A Civil Action (true story), and Michael Clayton (fictional but certainly inspired by various legal cases where big corporations knowingly put public safety at risk - Ford because of the Ford Pinto and Monsanto who makes Roundup and other "agrochemicals"). Dark Waters would probably be at the bottom of my list between those three which is surprising to me since I really like Mark Ruffalo. It's certainly still a good movie that I'm glad I watched but I was slightly disappointed with it. I may have had my expectations set too high.

And FYI- that was the real Ed Masery who played the Judge. Not that I've met her but Erin B. has come here twice to Savannah, once she was giving a speech about her job and I think the 2nd was yrs later working on a case. Saw "The Verdict" as a kid in the theaters with my mom. Can't remember what it was about, but the one thing I do remember about it was Paul Newman smoking a cigarette while drinking a glass of beer. I remember that because he did it in a different way than anyone else. He sucked on the cigarette, but didn't exhale the smoke right away, instead he took a big gulp of beer first, swallowed and then, only then exhaled the smoke. It was the coolest thing I ever saw and years later in college when I started smoking, I used to do that as a party trick to impress my friends. Fortunately, I've quit smoking 9 years ago. So I no longer do that.

Greetings Cassie and Carly Yes, Julia was GREAT in this film. It earned her an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for this film. She only has 2 other Golden Globes for "Pretty Woman" and for "Stee; Magnolias". She is part of the Roberts Clan that includes her brother, Eric, and her nice (Eric's daughter) Emma. Julia and Eric's parents were actors and playwrights who ran the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop. They also ran a children's acting school in Decatur, Georgia, to which Yolanda King attended. Yolanda was the daughter of Coretta and Rev. Martin Luther King III. Coretta paid for the hospital bills when Juli was born. Other great movies by Julia are: "My Best Friend's Wedding", "Runaway Bride", "Notting Hill", Eat, Pray, Love", "Mystic Pizza" (her first major film), "August, Osage County", "Normal Heart" (another Brockovich-ish role), "Money Moster", and "Wonder". The REAL Erin B can be seen in the scene when she is at the restaurant and her son asks "Mommy, you are not eating?" as the waitress. The REAL Ed Masry is the guy sitting behind her when she answers, "Well my lawyer took me out...". In real life, many of the plaintiffs, died within 10 years after the settlements, from my understanding. Jorg tried later to sue Erin for about $300K.He lost and got arrested for extortion and other crimes.
