@Hicky Hicky Now you are comparing apples to oranges! Tariff's are to be place on goods to protect good manufactured in the USA. BUT everything is made in China now so these tariffs are really taxes on the American people. Aluminum and steel protection maybe, but I have read that some mills closed because of the tariffs. Trump claims mills have opened and that is a lie! But tariffs on manufactured goods that we import from China but do not manufacture in the USA are nothing but taxes on the poor and middle class. By the way inflation and exchange rates have nothing to due with tariffs. ZERO! Google it.

Our president should try to make the best deals for us. Bringing up other tariffs in other circumstances is trying to confuse the issue. Looks like it worked. Keep your rusty steel and your Fentanyl, China. We’ll keep our innovation and you can figure it out yourself. Did you see the news about the EU beef export deal? CNN probably didn’t cover it. So do you want us to remove the tariff from China? Will your job be the next one to be moved overseas? This guy is full of shit about costs not affecting consumers but I FULLY SUPPORT this tariff against China. In fact - RAISE the tariff! Force the US companies out of China! If these companies don't relocate out of China then their costs will go up and will eventually be priced out of the market by companies that aren't located in China.

I own a business which used to exclusively use US made parts from US companies. As of last year - the last of these are gone. I am now forced to buy from companies that relocated mfg to China and these companies are pushing the tariffs down to the first level customers. So far, my business has absorbed the tariffs but can't do that much longer. I have no love for companies that don't relocate to the US but have a particularly bad disdain for those that relocated to China. But do you really want us to remove the tariffs and continue 'business as usual'? When will your job be outsourced? Should I even be concerned because it was your job and not mine? Nothing (yet) can be done about the greed of *some* US companies but we sure can do something about another country that want's to see the US fail. I *Love* the tariffs!

Peter Navarro's main point seems to be: look at what we wanted to accomplish with these tariffs, not at the impact on consumers. They wanted to negatively impact China's economy and boost US steel, which according to him they did. And they do not want to talk about increased prices for consumers. What I would love to see would be a new entry on bills/invoices. Usually you would see the price of every item, a Sales Tax and a Total. What about adding a new line: Trump Tariff? It's one thing for prices to go up. It is a completely different thing to see why that price went up!

Peter Navarro does not appear to understand that because the Chinese buy commodities in dollars, a drop in the value of their currency of 10% does not mean that there is a drop in the dollar value of the products and components they sell to the US. Firstly, almost always the contracts are in dollars and even if they weren't the contracts on renegotiation would see an uplift in the prices to reflect the increased price of commodities (always priced in dollars remember). These tariffs are destroying foreign economies. This is good? They're also negatively impacting our own economy too. Particularly tariff's on steel, aluminum, and other raw materials. Consumers are starting to fight back by abstaining. Other are forced to put off necessary purchases and/or avoid other purchases. We're seeing a 25+% drop in sales and production, over last year, in some industries. Plants and assembly lines are closing, shift are being cancelled, and people are being laid off. The domino effect is starting to show. Lost jobs have far reaching ripple effect. An entire community is affected. Other jobs could be lost as a direct result. Consumer confidence is shrinking across the nation. This latest round of tariffs and the proposed future tariffs is weighing heavily on consumers and employers alike. Small business owners, particularly retailers, are concerned about the additional impact this round of tariffs will have on them and their employees. Worse yet, domestic producers are increasing their prices to take advantage of the higher price of imported goods and materials. While the corrupt Trump regime is making their wealthy friends wealthier and destroying foreign economies, consumers are paying more to our government, several industries are in decline, and real people are losing their jobs. Our own economy is starting to fracture as a direct result of this regime. And now, despite our out of control deficit, Trump is hell bent on going into deeper and deeper debt pumping trillions into another arms race. And of course in ten to fifteen years from now, before the American people have paid off this debt a treaty will be signed and the missiles we spent trillions on will be destroyed. Many will argue we will retain the technology. However, that technology will be obsolete come the next arms race. It's as if this man and his corrupt cronies want to go down in infamy as the regime responsible for the most spending, deficit ballooning, robbers of the middle class and poor, and the most inept presidency in the history of our nation. The man is a complete and total lying fraud. He a fraud in business. A fraud when it comes to his religious claimes. A fraud of a husband (noted with all of his failed marriages and relationships). A fraud of a father (he literally pimped out his own daughter to get a business deal). Can't be a trusted friend. A fraudulent leader. And most of all, a fraudulent President. Nearly every stunt he's pulled as President is all about personal financial reward directly and indirectly. When his friends make money because of his policies, you can bet there is a back room deal to enrich Trump. Funds will be passed through a dozen or more shell companies offshore. Favors will be cashed in a decade from now. Future board appointments will be available. And possibly a campus building, library, or monument will carry the Trump name in the future. Everything Trump does must enrich himself or those close to him. Trump is facing a lot of charges when he's finally evicted from the White House. Several skeletons and even a few bodies have fallen out of his closet. His tax fraud alone is going to cost him dearly. Oh and guess what..... SURPRISE, he's not a billionaire. Not even on paper. Investors own the majority of "his" portfolio. Of what he does own, it's mortgaged several times over. Investigators are looking into bank fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering among the laundry list of other crimes allegedly committed by Trump himself and members of the Trump Organization. Hopefully the world economy will hold together until the new 2020 president is able to reverse these destructive tariffs. If we cannot hold it together the world will surely suffer another catastrophic economic meltdown. These tariffs are simply a new form of tax and revenue for our government. Domestic suppliers will make a little more. But nowhere near the figure touted by this administration. Overall the demand has dropped. Dirty and greedy domestic suppliers have raised their prices. The inflation wave is bigger and heading right for us. I'm saddened by all of the families affected by tariffs. Thousands of families are dealing with lost income from layoffs as a direct result of the tariffs imposed by Trump the Troll, better known as TTT. Stay strong. We'll soon be out from under the corrupt Trump regimes control and their criminal suppression our economy. Those arguing we've seen record employment under Trump's control have not studied the facts. Baby-boomers are retiring. Their children and grandchildren number fewer than they do. Meaning there are fewer applicants for the jobs available. This is also the reason for record low unemployment among African Americans. Trump's claim he is responsible is completely false. The unemployment rate has been in steady decline since 2010. In fact the decline stalled out last year. Many can argue it's tariff's, Trump's rhetoric dividing us, and an over all drop in consumer confidence. Save your money. If Trump is reelected, more jobs will be lost. We could find the global economy in an uncontrollable dive. Cheers!

His moved is devastating European markets as China is dumping there. The steel industry is now cutting back on investment and capital spending because of cost. We did get a bump with initial tariffs as expected but long term it does not work when market corrects. Eventually when (and they will) get tariffs pulled the US steel market will be weak and when China is reintroduced to our market the steel industry will be decimated

Sorry Erin but you missed the two elephants in the room. The purpose of the tariffs was to reduce the amount of goods from China into the USA. Mr Navarro confirmed that the tariffs are NOT working. He said that China is getting around the tariffs by 1. reducing their currency value and 2. reducing their prices. This means that the USA is still importing the same amount of goods and the trade deficit continues - despite the tariffs. But there is another point. The compensation paid to the farmers is from Tax paid to the USA government by the US tax payers. That tax money could be used for other purposes or less tax needs to be collected. Either way, the US citizens are paying for the tariffs because their tax dollars are compensating the farmers for their loss of business resulting from the tariffs. But of course, post the new Trump tax legislation, the rich are paying less towards the farmers compensation (because the rich pay less tax now) and the poorer are paying more. Et in Arcadia Ego. Paul.

She's saying that tarrifs are directly increasing prices in america and he's ignoring what she's saying and talking about overall price inflation. Its like the trade advisor is trying to say the impact on the american economy as a whole is better than the impact on the individual consumers or companies. He's trying to have a different conversation while she is asking this question and its a sad deflection. "nobody but the retail federation is finding anything and the retail federation is making this stuff up." is he saying that the people who sell directly to consumers are the only ones who have any information on this and all of the companies selling directly to consumers are making up information about the costs they incur?

The sad fact is what he is saying negates the so called tariff price increase to 90% of american products. Outisde of aluminum and steel production which kills 50,000 Americans. They decrease the cost of their goods so the companies get the products at the same rate. Ex(If it costs them 10 dollars originally, and then we add 10% tariff most would think it would cost 11 dollars; but china devalues their currency so they can sell it to us for nine bringing the cost to American companies back to 10) The truth is American companies see it as a way to increase prices without upsetting consumers as they have a scapegoat. Moreover, in the case where a war happens with China Aluminum and Steel production would be vital. Maybe listen to what he says a little more closer, rather than the lady who repeats the same study 50 times.

Did you take the time to listen and understand what he said. The trade war has resulted in more than a 10% drop in the Yuan against the dollar so American imports off the top pay over 10% less. On top of that, Chinese manufacturers fearing loss of business have reduced prices to cover the rest. That is a fact that is proven by the CPI year over year numbers which show there has basically been no inflation in consumer goods as the man correctly states. @@jorgen2517. Millions of Americans lost good paying or livable wage jobs under both Bush and Obama that out number farmers probably by 20 to 1 ratio which probably cost us 20 times more than the farmers are costing us. It is just simple arithmetic, we don't get our manufacturing base going we will be hit with longer and deeper recessions that could even lead to the great depression. By the way, this isn't me talking, this is what leading economist have said, and at one time both MSNBC and CNN backed this up. So sorry Jorge.

Re-evaluate what you need to actually buy. As a nation, we buy a lot of stuff we don't really need. For example - Many families have multiple TVs, yet they continue to get new ones each year during the holidays, many which, of course, are made in China. When we buy shoes, most come from China and other parts of Asia, but American consumers have to do their research and opt for better quality products that last, over buying cheap, low-quality goods over time that adds up on spending. And so on.

Peter Navarro was absolutely articulate In this exchange. The corporations want the tariffs stopped for there own benefit. Only hard data should be used to track a uptick in consumer costs. What is she trying to prove anyway? Individual self interest on material goods. We are supposed to do everything even go along with a China’s criminal economic posture to get a cheaper washer? He dropped this commentator like it was hot. Kudos Peter.

How about the idea that manufacturers will use any excuse to raise their prices. And so will retailers! Especially if there's a good enough reason that customers will buy into. A hurricane appears in the Gulf and days before a breeze wafts across an oil rig, gas prices are raised by $.20 a gallon because something might happen. I'm in an industry that was "effected" by the steel and aluminum tariffs and it happened months before they went into effect. Now, I understand that manufacturers have to project cost based on what they think future markets will look like but I have yet to see any of them refund money because future projections didn't pan out!

No DINGUS,... companies don't just look to increase prices... there are such things as 'PRICE POINTS'... as in a max that people will be willing to pay for an Item... if you exceed that you see your Volume in Sales sharply drop off... Most Manufacturers do their best to keep within PRICE POINTS... (you may actually know this if you knew anything about Economics... but then again, if you knew anything about Economics. you would not be a LIBTARD...)
