As someone who tried to help her grandmother (born 1901) find her discontinued red lipstick, I know the pain. Everything that I brought to her was "too blue." I don't think we ever found the color she was searching for, but it was an adventure nonetheless. When I was a teenager in the 70s I read about 'prolonging your lipstick' by mashing the remainder of the lipstick from the tube with Petroleum Jelly. So, I took the rest of her original lipstick and mashed it with petroleum jelly and presented it to her as a lipstick. She was so happy even though I don't think she ever wore it. By then she had switched to a new shade with brown. Great video and thank you for the timeline!

With the invention of the microwave, you can lob off chunks of different colours and melt the shades down in the microwave and blend your own custom shades. You can mix in eyeshadows if you cant find a lip tone youre looking for and mix it in while its melted. Pour into a cleaned lipstick tube or an empty lip balm tube and bam, totally custom colours. It’s why people get weirded out when they see the original Wizard of Oz Red Ruby Slippers, they aren’t red at all but an orange brownish tone for the technicolor film. Another thought came up about this: at 24:27 the very base of Marilyn's lipstick looks quite similar to the tester. I think the top part differs because it was used and oxidized over time. It would be interesting to do a test video on real technicolor using all these lipsticks. If you wanna know more about it, you could try and reach out to M. David Mullen. He was the cinematographer for Anna Biller's the Love Witch and he's an expert on period cinematography.

@missterryvintage Жыл бұрын
@@erinparsonsmakeup Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to shoot in real technicolor, since they discontinued it in the early 2000s and it was a proprietary method and only Technicolor labs could process film shot like that. 🙁 Some films nowadays, like said Love Witch, try to replicate it digitally or with the use of a specific set/costume design. Mullen for example used standard Kodak films, with specific lenses, lighting etc., so I don't know how exact colour replication would be with that. And I was wondering, if maybe you could get/rent a spectrophotometer for colour testing of your makeup? 🤔You wouldn't need some super high-tech one, there are small handheld ones for use in printing or in fashion, you could find a contactless one to not mess the makeup while testing. Maybe that would be an interesting way to colour match dupes? Also, is there a chance you could get someone to photograph, and put on Flickr or sth, some of your collection with a proper colour correction (maybe with ColorChecker Passport or sth like that)? I know you have tons of makeup, so I'm not saying the whole collection 😂 but maybe at least some of the most classic/famous/most used examples of various decades? It's so hard sometimes to pinpoint colour from etsy listings or from old yellowed ads. And yes, I know it's still not perfect, cause on one display photo can look different than on another, but with a well-prepared photo it's easier to get an idea. 😊

Yes, I noticed the color change as well. Especially visible on a larger screen. It may have oxidized. Or perhaps she layered a darker color over it or used lipliner under it, and the stain remains. I have 2 old lipsticks from Revlon that have similar orange tones Kiss me Coral and Marigold. Idk if they still make them but they seem to have a similar shade. If this lipstick were oil paint, it would be more of a chrome orange not cadmium. Perhaps that may help. Good luck and thanks, interesting to see the products she used.

Growing up my mom told me all the old Hollywood starlets in Marilyn’s time were wearing orange lipsticks and that hers was never really red. She only said it when I told her I wanted to wear red like Marilyn as a little girl. She rolled her eyes and said ITS ORANGE. so idk I thought it was common knowledge this entire time!

I studied historic paint restoration and had to practice color matching extensively by eye. An art restorer could mix different lipsticks together to get that shade. I bet they would get extremely close if not right on!

That's a great idea! Or a paint store! Don't have they have lazers at home Depot where they can find the EXACT color of a wall? I'm pretty sure the tech does exist! She just has to think outside the box and check sectors that have nothing to do with makeup but everything to do with color like art restorers or painters!

There is something lovely about wanting to have an item as intimate as a woman's makeup. Makeup is so personal to a woman and such a big part of everyday life, often times not even being thought of as an important part of life to some since makeup can sometimes just be a routine. But it takes time, thought, and care to paint your face in a way that you want to present to the world. I'm left wondering things like " What would she think of as she carefully made herself up?" Even if she is gone, her earthly possessions remain, dormant of use but given new life through careful admiration and imitation. I'm glad you are able to keep a piece of her from disappearing, if it weren't for people like you many of these items would probably have just stayed in storage, lost to time forever.

Erin, it’s just amazing the amount of research you’ve done for Marilyn’s lipstick. My mother loved Marilyn. I wish my mother was alive to see this amazing video. Can you do research on a woman of color and how they survived trying to get makeup. Perhaps Lena Horne, Leslie Uggams or anybody you know that had to deal with getting makeup for their skin color. I truly love your KZbin channel and your TikTok’s. My mother had a very difficult time trying to find foundation, powder or lipstick that looked decent for her skin color. I’m a baby boomer and it took many years for the makeup industry to include ALL hues of color. Keep up the great and enjoyable work you do. ❤🙏

On the other hand I also think is beautiful how even tho she was an icon she had her favorites and sticked to them, I feel like nowadays everything is about having a lot of everything more like quantity over quality/love/appreciation whereas back in the day people found something they loved, kept it and made it an statement for them and I think that is beautiful

‼️If you're going to watch only one Monroe film, watch her serious thriller. She was FANTASTIC in it! It's called Don't Bother to Knock! She wanted to be in serious roles and she studied acting extensively and was incredibly talented! But the studios ONLY wanted her to play the dumb blonde in romantic comedies. It was heartbreaking she tried so hard and took classes for DECADES because she thought it was her acting skill that kept her from being cast in serious roles. When it had nothing to do with her not having talent. It had to do with the men in charge seeing her as her beauty and nothing else. Her beauty kept the studios from taking her seriously. Very tragic. GREAT movie tho! I ALWAYS recommend that one. It's much better than any of the other movies IMO. I think she did only one other serious film and it was the last movie she did before she passed. Her husband wrote a script just for her. It was semi autobiographical I believe. But I don't think it's as good as Don't Bother to Knock. Pretty sure you can watch it for free on KZbin

So I’m starting to think this is a myth. The only evidence of this is from a partially fictional book. I’d love to ask Amy Greene directly because I thought it came from her but no - it’s from a book called Marilyn in Manhattan. Also the 5 lipsticks , I have found no evidence of this other than whitey saying they used a few shades. To be honest I can’t even find any proof this color existed so if you do have it please send me a message because I’d love to see it. 😊 some have said it because another color called rouge insolence from the kiss kiss line. Well I do have that and it’s quite a pure red. She also had a red Lipliner that sold at auction - a friend of mine has it. Anyway still on the search 😅
