I’ve heard a few snippets of what you mention over the years and it’s always given me the ick. The celebrity worship, wearing makeup to bed, implying everyone needs makeup to look good etc. It kind of creeps me out and paints a picture of a sad, shallow person.

So I used to work for the brand and let me tell y’all the vibe is very weird and culty. You can’t ever mention you like a product from another brand or that something from the CT doesn’t work for you. I once posted a drugstore focused look (I’m a freelance MUA outside of my job) and tagged the products on my personal IG page and got in trouble from the brand rep for not posting a CT only look 😑 their branding and the way they want their staff to talk to customers is super cringey

I always found the marketing quite cringey but I lived in the UK for three years and saw the ads everywhere, I finally gave in when a friend went to pick up a Filmstar Bronzer and I got a Popshot and a few products since then. But the marketing has ironically still made me disconnected from the brand, not attracted to it, and I can imagine that a lot of people feel the same- it just doesn’t feel current or as relevant to the consumer’s recent relationship with celebrity and it’ll be interesting to see how well it resonates within the next five years or so.

I didn’t know she said that about women who don’t wear makeup. Automatically, I intensely dislike her. I rarely wear makeup- it can be a joy yes, but it can also be a HUGE insecurity and money trap. I am enough as I am. I don’t need to weaponize beauty to succeed because kindness wins. Hate to say this, she sounds vastly insecure and a bit narcissistic. The price point is ridiculous, but now I’ll never buy from her. This has been very enlightening, thank you Kelly. Edit: clarifying I am not angry or upset, just making a low key comment

i looooove her pressed powder. i’m an oily gal so powder is essential in my makeup routine. but as much as i love it, there are SO many other cheaper products that do the same exact thing, and i’ve come to realize that with most of her other products as well. i think it’s similar to a luxury brand: you’re paying for the name and to be able to say “this is Charlotte Tilbury.”

I am pretty minimal with makeup, and CT still remains after a number of purges. I don’t care for her as a person but a few of her products remain in my now minimized bag of less than 30 products remaining. Love her Filmstar Bronze & Glow is one of my 2 favourite bronzers, my only highlighter, I am on my third and it’s also my favourite eyeshadow duo because it’s the easiest pretty natural ish eye look. Double use product. Her Airbrush pressed powder is another one I have bought over and over. It’s currently my only setting or finishing powder. Pillow Talk lip liner, lipstick and eye quad are my only “warm” makeup products. They pull a bit orange but when I want a little more warmth I love them on their own or with my usual cool tones to add a touch of warmth. Always in my minimalist makeup and bought several times. My one & only lip liner. The Sophisticate quad is another great quad, and is one of their few cool toned products. I purged it in favour of the UD Naked 2 mini.

I've never bought CT, but not because I have anything against her. Nothing suits my skin and taste. While I find her personal relationship with makeup strange, I think she is a marketing genius, and has developed some great products. I actually find her response to e.l.f. quite cheeky and in her character. E.L.F. profits because she does the creative, the development of the product, and tests the waters, then they enjoy her hard work. She can have a little fun and its very on brand. Hollywood. Branding. Image. Its not quiet luxury. Its not trying to pretend to be something it is not. The only thing that seems ridiculous is the fragrance.

It's interesting that you say we can infer that dupes are affecting CT as a brand when we are hearing other reports that luxury is a fast-growing sector and that dupes are actually driving consumers to the higher-end product. But in this wider picture, it seems like dupes are hurting everyone. I wish brands would just focus on making great products - fewer but nicer, you know?
@CatFurniture974
@CatFurniture974 3 сағат бұрын
I agree! We’re now on to “dupes of dupes” (I think Kelly did a video on this a year or two ago). I think dupes originated with all good intentions (so that people who didn’t have the money could still get an approximation of a product) but now we’re so inundated with dupes, “novelty” products, all kinds of “this is just a little bit different and so you need this” products - even hardcore makeup mavens are getting burnt out. There’s a reason brands like Clinique and Lancôme hang on under the influencer radar - they cater to the middle-aged and older people who don’t want to follow every trend but are brand loyal when they find a great product. Meanwhile new brands go through the cycle of Sephora to TJ Max to “whatever became of Brand X” every few years. There’s a limit to the shades of purple eyeshadow, TV or movie or toy tie-ins, etc. that people are going to spend on. And people are getting just as sick of the makeup equivalent of “designer brand clothing that falls apart in the wash” as they are of fast fashion.

I find CT makeup to be so underwhelming, and CT herself rubs me the wrong way. You're right; "fun, quirky, weird" is what she's going for, but it comes off as trying way too hard. Aside from her though, the eyeshadows were so overhyped and the lipstick isn't any better than others that cost half the price. I've decluttered nearly every CT item in my collection, except for the flawless filter, iconic nude lipliner, and the airbrush bronzer.

ive been really unimpressed with CT since i decided to splurge on the magic cream and a pillowtalk lip set. the packaging on both feels so cheap and thrown together and the lipstick fell out of the component only a week after i got it :( the magic cream also burned my face super bad and gave me a horrible rash for weeks but given that i have psoriasis im not gonna blame that on the cream just yet. so i was already disillusioned with the brand altogether after realizing they're charging a luxury price for dollar store quality. but now hearing the way she talks about makeup and especially the way she talks about other women? oh hell no😵‍💫 it's genuinely heartbreaking to hear the way she thinks about herself but its a different story entirely to hear that she projects her own insecurities onto other women. misery loves company i guess. either way this really solidifies my current opinion on the brand, mediocre quality for a luxury price tag all while it preys on insecurity, no thank you

It kind of surprised me to hear that Charlotte apprenticed with Mary Greenwell! I watched a couple makeup tutorials by Mary on Lisa Eldridge's youtube channel and she seem to have literally the opposite makeup philosophy to Charlotte! Mary doesn't use brushes, just fingers, she's all about imperfection and using makeup for an artistic effect, not to gain something or make you look "better" than without makeup! Mary and Lisa seem much more aligned than Mary and Charlotte!

Her voice, over the top persona and overdone filler (pillow face!) have always been a turn-off for me. I have only ever tried the setting spray, which is great. So now the question I ask myself is, “do I dislike her enough to impact how I choose to do my makeup?” We all have power to support the brands we like and that same power to not support the ones we don’t. It’s an interesting thing to consider what to do when our beliefs are counter to our convenience.

I sincerely always enjoy all your videos, Kelly! I’ve been in the online beauty space since 2010. I never watched CT’s YT channel but no one would stop talking about her and for YEARS I wondered WHO is Charlotte Tilbury?! I appreciate this deep dive bc I never got this far. I remember her brand exploded in 2014. It was inaccessible so I never tried it until it went to Sephora, and I still cannot afford her prices but I wish I could. Her marketing is incredible and clearly successful. Since CT has come to Ulta, I’ve noticed a lot of young people at their section, talking about it, reacting to it, asking their moms for it. There is a hype around her brand. I mean, good for her, and good for the people who can afford it. I like what I’ve tried but I usually have to shop for a dupe bc those prices are outrageous! And in this economy! I am usually excited to see what CT comes out with bc they are usually trend setters and create cult products that have lasting hype for years and years. Rarely do I hear about how bad their products are.

Instead of doing what she does (actions wise, not words), making, naming, and promoting all these products in this way but talking about how she "enjoys makeup as an art form" or whatever other bullshit makeup brand owners/whatever say when in reality they couldn't care less about it as a tool for self expression or a tool to level up in life etc, she is actually honest about her views (of course it's extremely rare that someone will publicly state their thoughts, feelings, and opinions 100% honestly or accurately or whatever, this is not what I mean, but rather just not full on lying or twisting things)

I've never really researched into Charlotte Tilbury as a person. The only thing I've ever bought from the brand is the Hollywood flawless filter as an "I did it!" treat to myself when I started graduate school back in 2018. Sadly, I think it's starting to go off, which is unfortunate since I have over half the container left. I prefer the price of the elf dupe, but I don't want that huge size, so I was leaning towards getting a Charlotte Tilbury mini. After watching this video, I'll probably get an auric glow lust mini instead, since I've been wanting to try the brand since it came out. Even though minis often cost more per ounce, I'd rather pay that than waste money on something that will spoil before I use it.

Girl! Did you dye your hair a tad darker? If yes 😍 after a few 90’s headband (which I also love) videos, it struck me out of nowhere (Beautiful thumbnail, as per usual 🤍)

I have no issues with 'vintage' style juices/formulas (heavy on jasmine/tuberose, powder notes, aldehydes like in Chanel no. 5). But those have to be tweaked to suit modern day tastes and be well formulated.

I have one CT lippie, in the K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula, and while I enjoy it (the shade Rose to Fame goes really well with the Natasha Denona Mini Crush palette), if I'm spending that much, I don't want my money going to a problematic brand. I didn't learn all this until after I treated myself to the lipstick, though. There are other great formulas out there, and I seek those out now.

i am gonna be honest - charlotte makes amazing makeup but it is too expensive. it makes me not wanna buy it, especially when dupes perform better. theyre not like hourglass who make one of a kind blushes. they just sell overpriced, glowy stuff.

thank you so much Kelly for your video about CT :) I must say I was not attracted at first by yet another new makeup brand, especially with that focus on selling celebrities, and influencers... but I tried it on a show sponsored by CT, and I was hooked. even if I own more of NARS/MAC/Chanel products in my makeup kit, I now have the lipliners and lipsticks, the color ranges are so so so well done, especially in the nude/natural tones, and for every skincolor :) there is a lot of different undertones in similar colors, so this is very interesting to find the perfect color for one model or client. I think the next products I'm going to get are the pressed powders. they are very effective and can be very helpful for setting and especially retouching. I will wait for the PR package though :) it's beautifully made, the lady is funny, the smell of the product is incredible, but there is not a CT product that is absolutely necessary that you cannot find somewhere else :) these are great products but in my opinion no must haves :) have a lovely day 🌹✨

I got a ct ad during this vid lol! I actually won't support ct specifically because she wears makeup to bed so her husband won't see her without. That in & of itself is so disappointing. Think about that. Her husband has never seen her without makeup. 🤦‍♂️😮‍💨

CT is a shrewd business woman who has capitalized on her success with celebrities and her signature, “Pillow Talk” -much like Coco Chanel did with her No. 5 fragrance and the “little black dress”. I wholeheartedly agree that CT goes overboard with her “buzz words” and self promotion. She does sound like a broken record. I find it ironic that Kate Moss is her “celebrity poster child” since Kate is famous for her “no makeup “ look. CT is right, though-people do tend to treat you differently according to how you look. I don’t agree with it, but it’s just human nature to gravitate towards the people we perceive as more attractive. I’m not saying this in a mean way, but I wonder what CT does look like without all that war paint? I imagine she’s pretty with or without it. She probably has a lovely porcelain complexion with charming freckles. It’s those unique, individual characteristics that set us one apart from others. For example, when you, Kelly, wear a “skin like” foundation and your freckles are visible. You have a lovely complexion and I appreciate that you don’t hide it with heavy foundation. I don’t believe CT wears a face full of makeup to bed. That’s obviously a sales gimmick. It’s common knowledge that going to bed without washing off one’s makeup adds years to one’s appearance, and CT is so beauty- oriented that she must be extremely conscientious about proper skin care. She has to maintain her looks in order to promote her merchandise. She does come across as vain and cashing in on her association with high maintenance celebrities. I don’t perceive her remarks about women who don’t wear makeup as deliberately rude or insulting; it’s just a ploy to sell more products. In my humble opinion, most women are beautiful with or without it. Reminds me of a quote by Audrey Hepburn: “Makeup cant help you if you are ugly on the inside-unless you eat the lipstick.” 😂 Or, as my sweet Daddy used to say, “Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes right to the bone!” He would also say: “You don’t need makeup, because you can’t improve upon perfection.” 🥰 But all of like a little “help” once in a while, even if it is a little bit to boost our confidence. 🙂

I could never pinpoint what it was about CT herself that I don’t like. You finally named it! The obsession with celebrity. It feels like she’s passed into unhealthy territory. I also find that her idea of democratizing beauty is flatly false because she has a very narrow idea of beauty. Finally, while I think she has some decent products, the pillow talk line doesn’t wow me and it feels like she needs a new idea.

Her makeup is not for mature women. Period. And I got mini pillow talk lipstick and pencil and nothing special. Everything is goin orange …but I am sure if I was willing to spend money could find something but just don’t think quality or eyeshadow payoff is not there. And don’t like these names which puts whichmacall mascaras into that don’t care category. Call me older fashioned….

I think CT as a brand is way overhyped and way too expensive for her products. Some of her products maybe good and yes I've gone out searching for lipsticks in the same shade or dupes in shades for her lipsticks but I can't see myself buying her products, mostly because of the cost but mainly because I know other brands do it better.. and yes Charlotte.. your products can be duped.. exhibit A: Elf Halo Glow 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wow! This indicates there is an unhealthy association between CT and makeup. That’s sad and is actually a turn off! Her beliefs appear to have morphed into mental illness surrounding makeup. That’s sad and pathetic. I think I am done with this brand and this is not good for young girls to hear her mantra as it promotes insecurity and the belief that you only have success if you are pretty. Wow. Eye opening video. Thank you.
