THIS IS A MASTERPIECE !!! Every second is beautifully crafted. If Debussy or Ravel composed this, it would have been lauded throughout the world. But instead it is dismissed because Chaussin was a rich amateur. Such hypocrisy. I am a professionally trained musician with a degree in classical. Can't anyone HEAR Debussy and Ravel in this glorious work??? And this particular recording is RAVISHING ... Voice and orchestra ... This music deserves a million views ...

I agree it’s so underrated!!!! It’s one of the most beautiful and monumental vocal/orchestra works ever written. Yet so rarely performed! There is poeme for violin by Chausson very popular among violinists- very similar, but the text here i see adding so much to the music and its overall the next lever how the text can be set in music….

Endlessly hypnotic and moving. One of the most romantic rhapsodies and threnodies ever composed, up there with Lenski's aria and Gliere's Coloratura Concerto.

When Chausson died in 18999 at 44 in a stupid accident of bicycle, he was one of the main hopes of the Franch music. The "Poème de l'amour et de la mer" is not his best score - by the way, the text is not excellent - but he was still to write his great scores: hte symphony, the opera Arthus, the Concert, the quartet with piano. This score shows yet a great sensivity to melody and harmony, and a beautiful orchestration - it is a crime to play it on piano, as it is done sometimes. The orchestral intermede is a jewel. It elaborates the cyclic theme which controls the whole work - a very wise idea.

On the video description there is a comment about the fact that the poeme was parnassianist, what I dont understand is why the french music of the change of century hasnt been qualified of parnassianist, which I think that fits much better on debussy, faure (that one fits a little bit awkward still as comes from the chopinesque tradition) chausson and much others composers on that line, as implies a kind of idealized impressionism and idealized classic motives with a central pillar in the form, the visual approach and the idealized classical ambient.

Bonjour.

There are some moments without voice, like the first interlude, you can start with that maybe. Anyway this comment is 7 months old so I think you figured out already ;)
