I say underrated bcuz those who don't know about Ernest usually don't know anything about Jim Varney or who he even is... Which is a shame bcuz Ernest movies are one of a kind. Jed showed he was more than his typecast... Having seen that, I would guess with all the other I've seen from him that he could go at literally anything and nail it. He was a master at what I say just about has to be the hardest of them all... Keeping a straight face thru his antics. He could have done anything.

I'm 30 and grew up watching his movies. My niece and nephew (5 and 7 years-old respectively) both love his movies as well. Jim Varney made family-friendly material that wasn't outlandishly obnoxious of the backpack- and lunchbox-selling garbage of today.

@@jonc.m8717 The so called family friendly movies today aren't all that family friendly, IMO. They use some pretty foul language in supposed kid shows today. Even a lot of the ads of today are pure smut. I remember when Jim Varney always made sure to never let kids see him smoking or seeing him in a picture holding a cigarete. He knew it was a terrible addiction and didn't want the kids who looked up to him think it was ok to smoke. Even in "Ernest Goes to Jail", when the warden asked if he wanted a cigarette before being executed, Ernest said said, "No. Cigarettes'll kill ya". Too bad he wasn't able to quit smoking in time.

theres a compilation of his commercial spots from the 80s and the bloopers at the end of the video proved this to be true. He was doing some spot involving a bag of groceries in a kitchen and the kitchen phone rang, unscripted of course, and without missing a beat he said, "...and you answer the phone." and the crew erupted in laughter

Had a cousin who met him in the 80s right about the time he was really getting famous. He said he was a real asshole, but then, so is my cousin. Anyway, he was funny as hell to me and I miss him. On a side note, idk who is into that sort of thing here, but this man had the PERFECT voice for ASMR! I would love to listen to him read in that voice while I try to go to sleep. It would put me right out. RIP Jim!

It's crazy to imagine as much as he wanted to do serious roles, this Astor Climmet guy was actually closest to what he wished he could have been doing. I hope he didn't hate doing comedy too much. Jim would walk in you'd see five different personalities walking with him! Jim is wearing two rings on his right hand during the first few of these, then , they are removed. Hard to see, but was he wearing the RARE SILVER SADDLE RING ring my friend Brigitta gave him at our Thanksgiving dinner with Joseph P. Liles ? He really liked it so she gave it to him!
