With this Tribute to MADtv, I assembled a compilation of clips focusing from the first few seasons of the show. The team at that time was clearly unafraid to take risks with controversial subjects, and the results were hilarious memories that will stand the test of time as they were clearly ahead of their time!

The last couple of seasons of Mad TV were horrible, their roster of greats was gone and ratings tanked. At the same time, SNL had Fey, Thompson, and a bunch of strong actors still, so they survived.

MADTV was a lot more raw and offensive. By the time the last season was made, Americans were protesting anyone and everything that offended them. They couldn't do the same kind of comedy without getting in trouble so they just closed up shop.

The way comedy was, and the way it should be... open to all. It was meant to be in jest. That is why they call them jokes... Comedy keeps us all in check by "taking the piss" out, as the Brits say. Everyone takes things way to seriously now. So sad, as life is stressful and short, and laughter keeps us happy and healthy.

When I see a sketch on Saturday Night Live oh, everybody looks frightened stiff wooden and terrified to make any joke Off Script because their producer is a megalomaniac. @@TheBuri00 :: I agree w / you about MADtv vs SNL. Sometimes, MADtv writers realized they may have crossed-the-line but they went ahead anyway ; for example, The-Bill- Clinton-can't-tell-a-lie- during-Chelsea Clinton's-birthday skit. Clinton's last line to "Chelsea" was brutal. After the skit, there was a disclaimer about how "lovely" they ( MADtv ) thought Chelsea Clinton was ... South Park has a rep. for being "mean-spirited". I stopped watching after their mis-treatment of Butters, but started watching again after the addition of PC Principal. ( I've never seen any disclaimers from South Park. )

@@cliffgaither IKR. 🤣 I watched this, Married With Children, The Simpson’s, Martin, SNL and In Living Color with my Dad when I was a kid. The rule was not to repeat the adult stuff, but I got to see anything cool on network tv before 9pm on a school night and by 12/1 am on the weekends until I was 12. Monty Python was also on the tube whenever my Dad found it on TV. Good times.

Here’s the thing about Mad TV: you know you’re in good hands. You can relax and anticipate humor, rather than brace for cringe. The writing is better, the acting is better, the cast gels more, and it’s just... good. It’s very, very good. SNL is a marathon of “Please, please let this be mildly amusing and not a carbon copy of a skit they’ve done 20 times before. Let the political commentary be witty and apt, and let the narrator not just state SNL’s political opinions outright. If it’s another Gilly or What’s Up With That, let the remote be close at hand.”

That was because 90s and early 2000's is when race relations were at their best. When Obama became president the racism amped up as some people were uncomfortable with the idea. So it put everyone more on edge. And since America has never really closed it's wounds and people try not to let the past repeat there is a hyper sensitivity from both sides. That's actually how we got here.
