We're still visibly shaken from Ernest going to Africa, but this, the final Ernest film, gave us a modicum of hope. Slightly less brownface, slightly more imperialism, and a good deal more laughs.
Although it's the last movie, we have one more special episode after this. Then we can finally--FINALLY--stop talking about Ernest (on camera.)

The movie with Varney as a pirate was called PIRATES OF THE PLAIN, again written/directed by John Cherry, but Varney, at that point, was too sick to do the role, so he was replaced by Tim Curry. It' was basically about a pirate captain who time-travels to Nebraska

I've mentioned before that I don't think Dr. Otto is an Ernest movie, it is just an Ernest cameo. Example: Casper isn't considered a Ghostbusters movie because Dan Aykroyd appears as Ray Stanz in it. If it don't have 'ERNEST' in the title, it's ain't an Ernest film, knowhutimean? It is a John Cherry movie starring Jim Varney. Just saying, this should be considered when ordering these films. I feel it disqualifies it from the top 4 (aka- the Disney Four). :)

Really sucks seeing this as the last episode. I wish we could get some more talking about the Ernest Specials like Ernest Goes to Splash Mountain or Hey Vern, It's My Family Album. Even an episode on the short lived Ernest TV show Hey Vern, It's Ernest! would be great!

Wouldn't have bet on the Sgt. Glory character being how he launched his career as a commercial pitchman. Another one of those fragments of his work that got retooled into part of the show's incessant parade of nonsense, like Otto. It's nice to know that the series went out on a better note than it seemed like it might after that last episode. RIP, Jim. And thanks for sticking with it the whole way, guys, even if it's been a hell of a niche thing.

I can't help wondering what might have happened if the first four Disney movies had struck it big at the box office. Like, REALLY big. "Bigger than James Cameron's Avatar" big. Would the Ernest films just get larger and crazier until Ernest was fighting mutant warriors led by Dr. Otto in a Mad Max-style setting by the time the series reached the ninth installment?

I wonder if it's unfair to refer to the various duos as "assholes" (which I wouldn't call Ernest, either), most of them try to be nice. "two assholes" would be more fitting for characters like Brooks and Pennington in Ernest Goes to Camp, the Murdock brothers in Ernest Scared Stupid, and Russell and Bradley in Ernest Goes to School.

I've avoided this movie for years, not because of its political issues, but because the theme seemed incredibly boring. As was the case with Rides Again, I'm glad that I finally watched Army, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it as an adult. Not every joke lands, but there's a decent amount of laugh-out-loud gags (the guy twirling his gun, Ben's heart attack, Ernest tripping over the IV drip) and the final scene is like a ribbon that ties the entire franchise together. Despite low budgets, the occasional lame joke, and the shameful racism of Ernest Goes to Africa, it's incredibly hard not to be charmed by the franchise's off-beat humor.

This one and the last one were my least favorite episodes. When. I hear phrases like "male gaze" and "insensitive" I get turned off to the whole thing. Then the weird implication that movies like Hot Shots are in some way responsible for the 9/11 attacks. You guys do what makes you happy, but I'm not sure I will follow much else in the future.
