Hi Eve, disfruté mucho tu reacción. Since you speak Spanish, good news is Malay is actually phonologically not too different from Spanish. The spelling in general is very phonetic. In terms of vowels, it has the same 5 that Spanish has plus a second E sound similar to the vowels in the English word 'bird' or 'work, the 'er' in 'water'', or the French 'que'. Unfortunately the 2 E sounds are not differentiated in writing but you can easily tell them apart when you hear them. There is no system of weak and strong vowels so words like 'dua' or 'dia' would often sound more like 'dúa' and 'día' though it does affect meaning or rarely even comprehension. Most consonants are pronounced exactly like in Spanish, and like Spanish none of them are aspirated like they often are in English P, T, K etc. J is pronounced like the J in the English 'job', the Spanish J sound exists in Malay but is represented by the diagraph KH. H is always pronounced like the H in 'hello', and in a closed syllable like in this song title 'Gundah' the H at the end is pronounced exactly like the S in Venezuelan Spanish accent like in 'malas palabras' or somewhat like Brazilian Portuguese R at the end of a word. We also have the sound Ñ but represented by the diagraph NY, so 'tanya' is pronounced exactly the same as 'taña'. The D sound is a hard D sound like in English, or maybe a bit harder probably closer to the German D. The letter C is always pronounced like the Spanish CH (regardless of the vowels), and Z and V are exactly like the English V and Z. We also call the alphabets the same as in English. The R is not trilled at the beginning of words but otherwise is pronounced exactly the same like in 'parar' or 'subir' (but in songs it's not unusual for Rs to be trilled sometimes). Also it has no stressed syllables though when spoken the words are usually very lightly stressed in the penultimate syllable (again very similar to most Spanish words) but it does not affect the meaning regardless. So keeping those in mind especially for songs (spoken Malay is a bit different there are many varieties) you can treat everything else almost like Spanish when you look at Malay song lyrics and with a little practice you won't have much trouble at all to sing along or to sing them. In Google translate the pronunciation in Indonesian is usually very good and reliable so can be very helpful. ((Malaysian) Malay and Indonesian are practically the same language with some minor differences, rather like the differences between Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Latin America) Llevo estudiando español unos años.
