I loved this game, I think it never got the publicity it deserves. It's short, while it has a lot of replay value the first run, it pulls you in completely when you are trying to figure out things and fit peaces in your head. Pick it up now, great game worth every penny of that asking price despite somewhat short length.

I like that there are games out there trying to push the dialogue-choice mechanic. May still have a way to go, but glad devs are attempting it.

Yeah, Oxenfree to me had possibly one of the best dialogue system I've ever seen in the video game - and it works for the game it is working for. It made few mistakes as I've seen in the video, but to me it is above the other walking deads and other games like that.

It's not something that hasn't been attempted before; it's been foregone for the exact reasons expressed in the video. It's developed out repeatedly before being sold, but some are still timed - and clearly so - to give the situation some pressure.

Before even watching the video, I'll quickly copy and paste something I said on the subreddit: "I wouldn't call it my favorite game of all time but it definitely comes damn close to that. I really really love it but I also realize that it's basically tailored for me. At 19 (20 now), I feel like I'm enough of a teenager to relate to the characters and enough of an adult to grasp the more mature themes of the game. Oxenfree has a very narrow target demographic which probably plays into why it's so underplayed."

I loved every minute of that game, I'm 25. One can not be too old for some teenage drama to throw you some years back in time.
@gownerjones2
@gownerjones2 8 жыл бұрын
***** I guess that's right. But at some point, I can imagine, it just gets too unrelatable. As teenage culture changes, the portrayal of it will, too. I'd imagine that, when we're in our 30s and 40s, the teenage drama as shown in the media won't send us back in time because it's no longer the kind of teenage culture or mentality we experienced. I hope that makes some sense.
@ChristopherRoss.
@ChristopherRoss. 8 жыл бұрын
I disagree. As someone fresh into their thirties, I really loved the game. To me, the aspects of teenage-ness portrayed in the game are really rather timeless. Think about; were it not for the phones, the game could be set in the 1950s. The writer was able to capture the essence of that stage of life universal to pretty much everyone who experiences it. Also, the story is very human; just because the characters are teenagers, I don't think that limits the demographic of people who can enjoy the game at all. It does what it does honestly, which is more than can be said for _so_ much narrative art these days.

I had a great time with Oxenfree, in particular from an audio engineering standpoint, the way conversations duck and weave so naturally was so satisfying, and made all the conversations feel incredibly organic. Just spooky enough to enjoy and recommend to anyone, even if they aren't usually into ~~spoopy things~~
@shotscarecrow
@shotscarecrow 7 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that you found the dialogue system frustrating. I thought it was extremely clever and naturalistic, in that it usually gives you the choice of interrupting or missing your chance to say what's on your mind, which (a) reflects real life, particularly when people are arguing, and (b) makes it all the more satisfying when you achieve precision timing and jump in with just the right line at the right time.

I found the conversation system really good and unique too. Because it was realistic it made it much better than those games where everybody is just freezing and wait for you to respond to something. Also, it's not obligatory to respond. The game progresses well even if you don't say anything...
@kumppi
@kumppi 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with dialog options in general is that we always want to say something. Telltale games even reminds players that "silence is a valid option". When I played this the second time I used silence much more and only used the fast fading "disruptive" dialog options when I wanted to interrupt who ever was speaking.
@vincentjohnson7175
@vincentjohnson7175 5 жыл бұрын
In real life I'm not interrupting people in the middle of a sentence... I'm waiting till they're done talking then trying to interject. That's the flaw of it. Like ES said it still mostly works but it's a little frustrating to miss dialogue sometimes because your choices are literally fading out while another character is still talking.

As an early-20s-something who recently got and completed -OXENFREE- (and got her girlfriend into it too), I've got to say that, honestly, it was really one of the most legitimately "sinister" horror games I've played... I dunno what it is, precisely... maybe the sympathy afforded the still-monstrous crew, or the existential dread of the "time loops" and what they imply. The untrustworthy nature of the game certainly helps.

I feel like a lot of this games strengths have been glossed over in this video, and you seem strangely insistent that it is for a teenage demographic - which I don't think has to be the case, despite the subjects being teenagers. The artwork, soundtrack & overall atmosphere is rather incredible. The mystery goes beyond what might occur on a cursory glance and I would argue that you have somewhat trivialized it undeservedly.

Nice Daria joke at the end. Also, I would have to say that for me what makes Oxenfree scary is that Alex is stuck in the time loop for eternity, making her actions pointless (unless you convince another version of yourself not to go to the island) and implying that she's never going to move forward in her life. That's a more terrifying fate than being possessed by ghosts in my opinion.
@flowerheit4512

I finally got around to playing this game and... It's... It's about grief right? The game is about how grief makes you feel stuck in place, unable to move forward in time and every time you try it pops back up and drags you back in, and that's what the time loops are. The characters getting stuck in their own loss. Anyway I feel like saying the game isn't about some overarching theme is a bit dismissive of an interesting thing.

Hah. I was re-watching today, and I just caught that it's a little silly to say that Oxenfree writes high schoolers with college age level snark, and then compare them to Daria characters. Who were, you know. In high school. (And I guess you could say that Daria was acting with college age level snark, but I know I couldn't escape Daria comparisons all through high school, and I doubt I'm alone in that).

different people feel different fears. cultural and layered horror scares some, normally cultured, people (like cosmic horror, theological horror, actual psychological horror, surreal horror). while visceral horror "scares", mostly in a game like structure other people(like ghost stories, serial killer stories, zombie stories)... so maybe what he find scary is not what you find scary...

She's not a teenager but at no point in _The Last of Us_ did I have to suspend my disbelieve to be convinced that I'm listening to a 14-year-old girl. I'm not saying that they have to use teen actors. I'm saying they should use actors who sound like teenagers. Whether or not they really are, I don't really care.

I haven't played Oxenfree, but based on what you've said I feel like there are enough similar elements to compare it to Until Dawn. Both are certainly different, but there's also offer a similar perceivable dialog choice type gameplay, although Until Dawn does definitely sway towards the "do you go left or do you go right thing", as said in the video. Great video as always!

I've seen the same comparison on the game's Steam forum and I need to disagree. Besides a passing resemblance of "teens/young adults go to isolated location and suffer spooky stuff", -OXENFREE- takes a much more, ah, cerebral approach to its horror. It's slower, it's more laid back, but it makes you think and gets into your head moreso than Until Dawn, which is really just "Slasher Flick: The Game".

This game was very different for me. It was free with Xbox Live, I'd never heard of it and I just started playing without knowing anything about it. I didn't really care about the relationships between the teens but was intrigued by the mystery and so didn't pay much mind to the effect I was having on "my friends" and ended up role playing as a very similar person to myself who is very dismissive of how people are feeling and trying to inspire some more pragmatism in everyone around me so that we can get back on track. The ending came as a big surprise to me as it had never really crossed my mind that I was supposed to actually care about these people. I'm glad I played it the way I did in retrospect, if I had known what I was getting into I probably wouldn't have bothered playing it but I invested a lot in the mystery and while I still roll my eyes at the importance placed on the characters' squabbles throughout it was enjoyable and it gave me pause at the end to think back on whether or not I agreed with the games' conclusion that I was a shitty person. Ultimately I don't and I think those kids need to think for themselves and develop some tougher skin but it was still a thought-provoking experience

Oh, are you finally making the switch to 60fps? That's a very nice change.

It's gonna be a bit of a bumpy transition (I have some footage captured for later this month that's still 30 FPS) but yeah, I figured it was time.

Errant Signal That's understandable. It's enough that you're making the switch. A lot more pleasant to watch this way. Looking forward to more!

Most reviews talked about it being a teenage horror story, so I ignored it. After your review, I'm actually curious. Probably buy it later.

If you don't already have all your Halloween videos planed, which you most likely do, and you're willing to do a "Halloween" game that's less scary and more unnerving, you should do one of these videos on Sunless Sea. store.steampowered.com/app/304650/

"This is a known thing that teenagers do around here" is the best example of terrible dialogue, of how human's don't talk I've heard in a long time.

So. Are these characters more or less likable than the ones in Until Dawn? Granted, the teens in UD are rather... bottom tier, rather Cabin Fever-ish, and from what I can gather so far, they seem to be at least two tiers above those douchebags, but I feel I need a couple other eyes, or experiences I suppose, before I try to plunk down money for this game.

Until Dawn purposely stereotyped its characters to be typical slasher characters. I would say that Oxenfree has less clearly defined characters, and most of them can actually change how they act by the end of the game. I would say, go watch a walkthrough up to the initial radio anomaly as that is about the only time everyone is in the same area and is acting...themselves.

until dawn character are obscene sociopath self-centred assholes... the whole lot... sure, that makes them pretty much perfect "horror victims", but horror victims of the many shitty-script horror stories... so BAD horror movies...

I actually really liked Until Dawn's characters. I wouldn't say they had *a lot* of depth, but they were all designed to imitate teenager archetypes because each character felt like they had to play a certain role, while having unique personalities hidden under the facade. Mike for instance came across as a douchey prankster, but ended up being capable of stepping up when shit hit the fan. Ashley seemed like the goody two-shoes, but wasn't above fucking everyone over when it suited her. Chris came across as a goofy geek, but had a really rational mind about him. Emily... well, Emily's a bitch, but she could take care of herself better than anyone would have thought. Ultimately, what makes a character well-written isn't necessarily how realistic they are, but how thoughtfully they push the envelope given their expectations.

Aculem some people, myself included, would say that those characters are dumb cliche with a vague attempt at deconstructing cliches by making them "complexified"(an artificial complexity given by "overwriting stuff", so adding stuff for imitating complex characters) but in the end making them "good as plot needed" to progress itself in the VERY LIMITED way you have power over the plot (I mean, lotsa ending, but mostly artificial ones like Beyond or any telltale game...not real choices/changes). the desperate attempt at being "coolz" was obvious for how much shit they shoved constantly on the screen both in mechanics and in writing... "it's a slasher! it's also a monster movie! it's also a 'deep psychological drama(TM)'! it's also a "coming of age" story! it's also a love story! it's also a Surreal movie with pseudo-artistic premises! it's a Old School Survival Horror! It's a Graphic Adventure! It's a QTE! it's a action game! it's an indie-like walking simulator! it's a choose you adventure kids book!" sure, graphically is cute. until you see those hideous faces that bloat when they try to imitate human expressions...I guess they was monsters, after all...

1r0zz I mean, I agree with all your points completely, but I never once got a sense that the game was trying to take itself seriously. It's kind of a cheat that B Movie slashers and their imitators have because they generally can get away with being bad because that's the expectation. I personally won't blame the game for taking that route, I think it actually imitated the genre quite well. As for the 'complexified' characters, well, you're not wrong, but I can appreciate it when at least an attempt is made. The game is really quite good at making you hate the characters initially, but even though the characters are made artificially complex, like you said, it still kinda works to make you warm up to them over time. Plus there's only so much complexity you can add to characters in these CYOA games because each branching path has to at least make *some* sense. In the end, I think the game at least tried to push the genre, which is more than I can say for most games.

you nailed it with the observation on "dissaffected sarcasm" taken from Daria. The same flaw in Life Is Strange. Teenagers don't talk like that.

I mean... I do. I'm pretty sure I've been doing it for a long while too. But I get your point, it's not how most teens act.

I honestly couldn’t finish the game because I found the dialogue to be too cringey which I know is an overused word, but the whole time I just felt like this isn’t how my teenage friends and I talk.
