Hope that Knighton continues to improve. Clearly, Lyles is the man to beat in the 200. But Knighton is 6 years younger and the future of US sprinting if he stays healthy. I’m concerned Knighton feels the weight of the world on his shoulders given his inhuman success as a teenage sensation. Hope that Knighton has a support system helping him maintain balance and happiness. He is an generational talent that is still physically developing.

I love that someone has pointed out , ( and I hope that this young phenom already understands as the maturity he shows would indicate) that there is no need to shoulder the weight you so elequently spoke of . And I add my hopes to your own that he does indeed have a great support system in place to keep him grounded during the heady and intoxicating times when he achieves his dreams and to lift him up and remind him of the incredible heights he has already attained and those lofty as yet unrealized goals he has set for himself during those times he falls short or struggles with breaking through barriers. That emotional support system is so important it can't be overstated. Athletes like Wade Von Niekirk , Abby Steiner who have had to overcome injury I'm sure would attest to the fact that your support system ( those people you surround yourself with day in and day out make all the difference in your ultimate success !! You are wise to see this !

18.99 is a big reach for anyone. You would have to run an opening 100 of under 10 and close damn near as fast. It’s already wild enough that only a handful of sprinters ran sub 10 sub 20 and consistently at that. I feel bolt could have theoretically if he had a twin just as fast pushing because he mainly coasted after about 120. You can see how much effort Noah and others are putting in on the back stretch.

Eh. Bolt had 10+ years to run a second perfect race and how many times did he approach it? Maybe two more, and he got slower as he aged past 21. Erriyon will be doing the opposite. I don't think he'll peak until 26 or so. Sub 19 is definitely possible when you look at his physical shape at 19 and fast forward it 6, 7 years. Just compare Noah and Josephus from 19 to how strong they are now. Tebogo better get on that gas if he wants to stay close. But Tebogo is actually just what Erriyon needs. He's about three years away from Noah but Tebogo will push him which is exactly what he needs right now.

It’s ridiculously difficult to pull it off though. Forget 19 seconds. To get to the WR he has to go out in 9.95-10.0 and come back in 9.25-9.3. Lyles and Tebogo are in the ballpark in the 2nd half but they’re going out in 10.20-10.3. There is no one on the horizon that can go out sub 10 and come back in 9.2.

@@sinking1902 I am assuming he stated that as his career goal, not his seasons goal. Hes 19 & given what he has done so far Im not willing to doubt him at this time. The difference between 19.19 & 18.99 is the blink of an eye, I think its even less than the average time it takes a person to blink. On paper its a huge difference but to someone training at that level of competition they know its a very small thing that can happen almost any time they go onto the track. Look at Mike Marsh's pb in the 92 Olympic semi final, he eased up with 15 meters to go n came within 0.01 of the long standing world record. He didnt know he was running that fast, he shocked himself by running relaxed n letting his training & preparation do its thing. Knighton isnt even 20 yr old & already hes won a national championships, not in Ireland or Madagascar but in the USA !! He has finished 4th in an Olympic final & Medaled at the World Championships, point being, he's not just fast, he has a fantastic Michael Johnson sized bulletproof temperament. If a kid like that tells me 18.99 is possible, Im gonna sit back n see what he can do.

Yes it’s a good time and an impressive performance, but Noah still literally beat him on the day and clearly Noah hasn’t hit his top form this season. Regarding the actual race, it’s much harder to maintain the lead than it is to run someone down, Noah probably didn’t even realize he was getting chased. The guy runs one good race while STILL losing and everyone thinks Noah and Knighton are washed. To even suggest the likelihood of Noah losing and Knighton not even medaling we’d have to see Tebogo doing this over the course of years, you can’t base it off of one race. There’s a chance, but Noah is still the favorite and Knighton is for sure worthy of 2nd or 3rd based on this season.

Erriyon Knighton will definitely go down as one of the greatest 200m athletes of all time but I don’t know if he will break 19. I personally think hes gonna reach his prime early like Usain Bolt and never really improve after that. Bolt was 22 when he ran his 19.19 and almost 23 when he ran his 9.58. Everyone thought Bolt was gonna go sub 19 and 9.4 because he “hadn’t reached his prime yet” since he was only 22, but that’s when he peaked. I think the same thing might happen to Knighton. Knighton definitely has the capability of breaking the wr in a few years but I don’t know if hes going to go sub 19. Just my opinion.

Bolt run 9.58 and 19.19 only four days apart. In august 2009. At 23 years of age. A very premature prime. He lost focus since, not condition, so EK could prime in 3 or 4 years if stays healthy and maybe break that record

He needs to start running some open 400s. I believe that's why Tebogo improved his 200 so quickly. He'll have extra closing strength if he adds some more endurance. Right now I think he gets a bronze at best if Lyles and Tebogo sufficiently recover from the 100. He'll have to run in the low 19.4s to get a gold or silver and that may be possible if he peaks at the right time and that weight lifting pays off.

Let's talk about that 19.93 by Bolt. He did that in April 2004 and turned 18 in August of that same year and went to the Athens Olympics and didn't get out of the heats with a 21.05. Then in 2006 he placed 3rd at the world championships with a 20.10. 2007 he got 2nd in worlds with a 19.91 then we all know what happened the next year. He ran the double full time won gold and smashed all the world records by a mile. They always talk about Bolt's junior record like it was obvious who he was going to be but he was a full size adult and that 19.93 was over his head at the time and it took him almost 4 years to get below it again but when he did it was insane. Knighton is miles and miles ahead of Bolt. It's really underplayed how much faster Knighton is than Bolt was at that age. Bolt did run 400m for a while but what Jamaica did in 2008 with 2 sprinters coming from the middle of the pack to absolute world dominance is unheard of really. To look at their progression charts is sort of mind blowing especially for SAFP. Knighton can for sure break 19 seconds.

I'm not sure if we was a Junior or no longer eligible because he was turning 20 in December of that year (I think), but Alonso Edward back in 2009 at the age of 19 ran a 19.81 for the Silver medal at world championships behind Bolt's 19.19. Unfortunately his career never took off as he got injured, but I've always thought that guy got really overlooked since the 19.19 was a huge talking point. A 19 year old medaling at world championships with a fast time & a great finish (I think he went from 5th to 2nd in the final 100m even passing Spearmon who was a very good finisher) is really impressive. Not Knighton level, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

If we look at his PB run, Erriyon runs the 200m slightly differently to people like Lyles. In his PB race Erriyon absolutely ran away from the field from 50-140m and then held it together for the final 60m. Lyles does his best work from 100m onwards. Erriyon must run the race in a way that best suits his talents not slavishly follow others. He is approaching his running in a very professional manner, he has learnt from Lyles - to run really fast at WC he first must be running fast consistently. This season shows that Erriyon can run 19.8-19.9 just about every time. I have no doubt he will break his PB this season and within the next couple of years he will run below 19.3. No idea whether he can go even faster but I know it will not be for lack of work

I think TRP is on to something here... Knighton seems to really focus on Worlds... That's when he's gonna go full out in the final... It'll be a three way battle: Lyles, Knighton and Tebogo. And then there are De Grasse, Bednarek and Hughes that could go down to 19.6 and not get a medal. Might be you need to run 19.9 or even under just to reach the final - can make it hard to get the best time in the final for some runners...

I’m estimating Knighton will run another 5 x under 19.90 secs this season with the worlds and Diamond League events. Regarding the WR, I’m guessing he won’t beat that in his career but may run under 19.30 seconds. Bolt progressed well after his junior days. Maybe Knighton won’t progress as quick but will be more consistent with the great times so will break a few records but not the WR. I think we are witnessing more super human sprinters coming through running very similar times but no stand out runner. You can’t predict the top three in Budapest. It’ll be on the day whoever gets the best start and finish. Can’t wait for the men’s and women’s 100 and 200.

I think any athletes just wants to win a gold medal. At high level competition, the 200 world records can be break. Noah Lyles Tebogo and Erryon Knighton can break the 200 wr. This August at Budapest the 200 m is belong to Noah Lyles, but anything can happens. False start, injury etc. My concern is about false start, it can break anyone dream. My suggestion 1st false start shall not be penalized, but subsequent false starts should be penalized. One false start should justified. The IAAF shoud change the false start regulation.

Sub 19 is definitely on the table. Erriyon won't peak until he's 26+. He's STILL in his teenage body. You can just compare Noah and Josephus' metamorphosis and transpose that to Erriyon. Noah better try to really put these records out of reach cuz Erriyon is hungry.

He isn't necessarily toast. I think he was way way way over utilized in his college career never allowing himself to truly focus on a single distance. I agree with many others who think his best distance would be the quarter mile but neither do I think he ever really got to show us what he was truly capable of over 200m as he never quite got the knack of running relaxed. Should he turn pro I will definitely keep an eye out for him. Also he is such a gifted long jumper I think it will be hard for him to let go of that event ..and maybe he shouldn't.

Some people peak early and some people peak late. 19.19 is a BEAST of a time to beat, and the closest anyone has come, was Yohan Blake with 19.26 I believe. However, Barring injuries and steady improvement, Knighton could challenge it but I don't see him breaking 19sec barrier or even breaking that record. Nothing wrong with setting a goal though.
