No no, this contains the same brutal power and majesty of the bootleg recording ... I suspect Legend 2 with proper studio sound would have the same qualities as this pristine transfer of d'Obermann. It just takes some recalibration of your mental ear.

This is the most hiss and distortion free recording I've ever heard of EN's Obermann! This is an incredible find, Greg! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing it!

You are quite welcome, Iian. I've had the good fortune to become friends with the fellow who arranged many of ENs recording sessions, and sat with him when he recorded Obermann. He has some very interesting stories about the sessions, and about EN.

I'd be glad to share some, Iian, but am not sure to exchange contact information. Any ideas? I just heard the Sakuraphon release of Beethoven's Pathétique, Moonlight, Op. 31 No. 3, and Appassionata sonatas. No less than utterly astounding to me. He's unique.

So this must be a studio recording, and not the bootleg? It certainly sounds like a different interpretation... Tremendous, genial, stunning, but perhaps with more poise than the gritty dredge from the old church's basement...

I think we're just so accustomed to the grungy sound of the bootleg recording that the performance sounds a little restrained and gentlemanly by comparison. I can say without exaggeration that I've listened to the poorer acoustic quality version over a hundred times, and hearing it with this smooth studio quality sound takes some adjustement. But the same titanic power is there, you just have to recalibrate your inner ear.

The bootleg tape recording is 19:58 and this recording is 20:30. If you listen to excerpts side by side you can tell that the bootleg recording is pitched higher.
