I simply had to read Marlowe and search out Ervin Nyiregyházi's version. This fits the Nyiregyházi I've come to know and love. He wrings every bit of emotion from Leander's struggle in the Hellespont and Hero's ultimate loss and demise. Leander's death is, to use the modern legal phrase, death by misadventure; hers, a result of having known love and then have it taken away. To quote A. E. Housman who finished Marlowe's epyllion: "By Sestos town, in Hero’s tower, On Hero’s heart Leander lies; The signal torch has burned its hour And sputters as it dies." Ervin Nyiregyházi sings to me. Oooooh the cantabile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing is as beautiful as Nyiregyhazi with Liszt, period.

This Recording is also a rare example of Nyiregyhazi playing accurately (in terms of not intentionally adding dissonances a lot of the time) showing that even in his old age he could play accurately, and that the modifications he makes are expression and not mistakes.

Esta balada se escúcha poco ' pero easa dos que no se delan de escuchar. A Lizst se le oye muy poco. ,en concierto con publico. es fàcil equivocarse.
