Centerpiece Hawkins Edison 1964.
From a film in London in 1964 we see and hear the tune Centerpiece played by Coleman Hawkins on tenor sax and Harry Sweets Edison on trumpet. Pianist is Sir Charles Thompson and drummer is Jo Jones. I cant recall the name of the bassist.

Hawk is feelin’ it. I love how many choruses he takes. Everyone is just relaxed and in the pocket. Jo Jones’ drumming is like riding in a Cadillac.

Sublime. Ahhhhhhhhhh.. And yes, the bassist is Jimmy Woode, whom I believe outlived all these other cats, playing almost up to his death just a few years ago.

I like our generation, it's just the good music, where people really delve into the art of it, isn't profitable to the masses. It never has been. Good music always sticks around, but the bad slips through the cracks of time. Anyone remember a bad song from the 60's? Me neither, because everyone forgot them.

I was there, just out of highschool, digging Mingus and Monk and Coltrane and Dolphy and Hawkins & Edison. It was heaven! We thought it would go on forever. The joke was on us, with the end coming way too soon. But I can remember... Michael Goodwin

You can't beat a good trumpet sound over an electric guitar solo. It gives me one of those natural 'drug free' highs. It's good to hear the original by the way!

1964 and already Coleman looked so old, I was only born in 1990 so there was never really a chance for us to meet :(. Oh well, you still live on through your music and in my heart.

I learned this song on the bandstand in Chicago when I was kid from the late great Sonny Seals. This song sounds like the essence of jazz. Like being connected to everyone that came before you and the future ones to come.

Harry Edison played Centerpiece with Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. In fact, the second time through the theme chorus, the arrangement is similar to the way the LHR album arranged the second time through the theme near the end of the recording. Thanks for posting this video. I like hearing Coleman Hawkins with either Harry Edison or Roy Eldridge.

@Johnoooh It was on youtube before the giggle brothers bought it. I loved it and suddenly it was gone (like Gerry Muligans prelude in e minor, Chopin), citing royalty difficulties, but thanks to bob erwig, the canadian cornettists, its back. Its a brilliant blues.

its funny the difference between rock and jazz bass. Rock you just play roots and maybe a 5th or two, but in jazz you have to really know what your doing.
