I've watched tons of how-to and review videos over the past year as I began getting into filmmaking, and I just wanted to say that your video here might be the absolute best one in terms of being concise. You touched on so many of the questions I've asked and dilemmas I've faced, and you did it in such a clear and thorough way. Seriously, thank you for doing such a great job walking us through your particular path. Please keep em coming.

Also, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this already or not or if you already figured it out, but I got the Tilta Nucleus and Ronin S and the Nucleus can actually be programmed for the infinity lenses in a way that you can tell it when it needs to stop on each side of the focus range, eliminating the constant spinning on those lenses. This is an incredible little focus device and is absolutely perfect for the BMPCC4k rig on the Ronin S. You can also get the handle bars for the Ronin S and attach the wireless focus wheel to the handles near your hand, put a rubber band on the wood grain for extra grip and you can literally focus with your thumb as you are walking. It's amazing!
@erwinmarionneaux
@erwinmarionneaux 4 жыл бұрын
The issue isn’t really the constant spinning, the issue is that it’s focus by wire so the focus range changes based on how fast you spin the wheel. If you spin it quickly, it might go through the entire range in 1/4 turn. If you spin it slowly, it might take 2 complete rotations to go through the focus range. That makes focusing a pain because the focus amount is different everytime based on your speed

best video! one cool tip for me is using the black magic app to pull focus, you can add presets so it will automatically transition between subjects. you can set something for example 6 inches away and another 3 feet and it will automatically move to the perfect spot, even adjusting the time it takes to focus shift, from 0.5s to 7.5s. unfortunately I much prefer vintage manual lenses so I want to get the Tilta follow focus. for us filmmakers it's good to see someone actually cutting out the useless parts of a video! haha. So far I got: BMPCC4K, NP batteries, full cage with handle and SSD holder, T5 SSD, lenses, Lav mics, NTG3 and DJI Ronin S. Still 'need' to buy: follow focus, metabones adapter, matte box, rails, external motor, MORE LENSES, and probably like another $1,000,000 worth of equipment.

Wow, so concise, well though-out, researched and clearly presented. With most KZbinr videos, I'm skipping through, searching for useful bits of information. But this video is so tightly packed with valuable insights and tips. I'm gonna have to watch it a couple more times… and take notes! Subscribed, liked, and even dinged the bell (which I almost never do). Thanks Erwin!

Greetings from London, England. Thanks for sharing your rig set up and reasons why you chose the components. It’s really helpful and will stop newbies like me from buying the wrong thing. I recently purchased the BMPCC 6k and am trying to get the smallest most effective rig possible. I think the battery is the only real weak point of this camera system. I’ve opted for the battery plate that takes the Sony NPF batteries. The V-mount option seemed a little large but you’ve made it work. I look forward to your future content.

Top tip with the tilta mini Matt box which worked for me - use step up, step down rings on the adapter ring to bring the thread forward to attach the VND. I use the 72mm adapter ring with a 72/77 step up ring which I can then attach my 77mm VND to. I can also use the 67mm adapter with step ups to the same 77mm VND
@erwinmarionneaux
@erwinmarionneaux 3 жыл бұрын
Like the next day I solved this, you can use an extension ring or get a cheap uv filter and remove the glass to bring the thread forward. That way you can avoid step up and step down rings

Do you guys shoot handheld or with a gimbal? Or both like I do? Being able to switch between the 2 quickly has been a HUGE help. **this video is focused on the equipment and purpose of the equipment, I know more examples of what I discussed could have been shown as well as much smoother gimbal footage but given the situation with Ms.Corona Virus, things are a bit limited at the moment lol. Auto tuning the gimbal for the new setup and more purposeful walking would have provided better results. I’ll cover proper gimbal settings for this setup as well as the image stabilization flaws when using the Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8 in more detail.
@alexanderk3081
@alexanderk3081 4 жыл бұрын
I do both. When I want to follow the artist in shooting through a field or wherever they are walking/running I use my gimbal. I also use my gimbal to move in and out from the artist to get some cool footage that looks like the camera is moving away. I shoot handled when I'm up close to the artist or when I want to shoot miscellaneous things like hang movement, and things like that.

I have a suggestion. Don't use a dummy battery but the 12 v input on the left side. That way you can have an lpe6 battery in there. This allows for v mount hotswap as it will use the lpe6 if there is no other power coming in

Hands down, best video I've seen yet on rigging the BMPCC4k. LOVE how you included all of the things you tried that didn't work out well and then giving us your fixes for them. It's a lot of the same problems I've had and/or anticipated having with this gimbal. I have this camera and cage and I just ordered the Ronin S. What I am having a hard time with finding a good accurate answer for is the counter weights. Do you have to have 2 of the 3.5oz weights, or 3.5 mixed with a different one, or what is working the best for you? I am going to purchase this clamp and the weights, but I want to be sure I get everything I need the first time without buying something I don't need. Any advice would be appreciated.
@erwinmarionneaux
@erwinmarionneaux 4 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate that! I know everyone situation is different so I tried to be as clear about my own experience as possible. As far as the counter weights, one was enough to balance the camera without some of the extras like the mattebox and moving the follow focus on the right side of the camera instead of the left helped as well. BUT, just the 1 counter weight was right on the limit of being balanced. Any little change would mean the difference between it being balanced or it not. So I added a second weight. I wasn’t trying to find the “perfect” weight to balance it because like I said, if anything causes you to need a little more, you’re stuck. So I have 2 full sized weights which gives me flexibility to do whatever I need and not worry about if I have enough counterweights to balance it out
@864mediallc4
@864mediallc4 4 жыл бұрын
@@erwinmarionneaux Awesome. Thank you for the reply! That clearly tells me what I should probably buy, which will likely be at least 2 3.5oz weights and I'll go ahead and get another smaller one as well and play around with it. I am glad to know that it will still work with just one. Keep the awesome videos coming!

A few months back my HDMI went out and it was because powering your screen with the same batter you power your camera with creates a closed circuit loop and can fry your port. Luckily I had a warranty - but I would recommend against it. I used mine for several months before it finally gave out.

Facts. I picked up the 12-35 at Best Buy for my G7. I’m dicking around and I see the Olympus 12-40 on a shelf. Some quick googling showed me that it had a manual focus clutch and a bit more reach than the Panasonic version. Exchanged lenses on the spot. I was ok with losing IS as I planned on using this lens on a BMPCC and a shoulder rig. Best lens choice I’ve made in a while. A lot of people sleep on the Olympus. My current Gh5’s IBIS has been plenty. That focus clutch is so damn handy.

How long can you use your Ronin S using stabilizer current for the camera too? I have heard the Ronin S battery drain very very fast, I discarded that option because I heard that several said that only one hour was enough using both
@erwinmarionneaux
@erwinmarionneaux 4 жыл бұрын
I would say about 2 hours, maybe 3 if your not doing anything too crazy. I’ve never had it die on a shoot but I’ve had it come close. It’s extremely easy to change the battery though since the grip just slides of with the knob and I can slide on a new one in like 10 seconds.

Thanks! I use the matte box just as much on or off the gimbal, of course it’s more trouble to use on the gimbal but the setup I put together makes it easy

Hey Erwin, I have been having issues balancing my 4k on the Ronin S - I definitely need the counterweight - which one do you use/recommend?
@logiknotlogic6586
@logiknotlogic6586 3 жыл бұрын
so theres no chance the bmpcc4k can balance of a ronin SC right? Not even with a counterweigh?
@erwinmarionneaux
@erwinmarionneaux 3 жыл бұрын
The ronin sc only holds around 4lb and the bmpcc 4K is 1.5lb alone. So after adding counterweights and the lens and other accessories, it would really struggle. The new sc can hold more so you’d have a better chance with that one

The biggest concern for me going for the bmpcc is the lack of stabilisation. What do you guys think because in my calculations I added a gimbal but my pockets aren't that big..

@@TazzSndhu why did I not watch that part of the video lmao 😂 it doesn't look bad handheld but he had alot of accessories which I wouldn't have and it's still got alot of gitters. I think i might go for a gh5 or g9 since I'm a beginner.

Provolt gh5 is outdated bro but really depend on what you need the camera for! I am too getting into music videos and is fresh chapter for me but i am trying to make as much as research i can as the investment has to be worth and for a long run! I have seen all sort of good or bad bmpcc videos but for some reason i can see the vision i want in my project thru this camera! Can’t afford a RED atm so the bmpcc 6k does sounds interesting to me! But end of the day IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHO IS BEHIND THE CAMERA , if we talk about a quality project! Not just the equipment

@@TazzSndhu yea I really want the g9 because it's a good hybrid with decent video. I agree that the black magic will be a bett3long term investment but the g9 will be a cheaper investment for the time being and thrn if I get good and make money I'll upgrade in the future

Does anyone have a comparison to the following gimbals? - Gudson Moza Air 2S - ZHIYUN WEEBILL 3 - DJI RS3 (Pro) What would be currently the best option to about 700-800 $ for filming indoor and outdoor dance events, dance couples in daylight ? Camera and lens can be purchased flexibly - possibly Blackmagic Pocket 4k ?

how long are you going to be shooting on a hand held gimbal that you need an external SSD? also why is he using a mat box with a screw on filter????? you get a lot of these type of guys in the black magic forums and ronin pages posting their "rigs" showing off what kit they have. .
@erwinmarionneaux
@erwinmarionneaux 4 жыл бұрын
I often shoot long enough to need to use an ssd. It’s not JUST about how long you shoot, being able to plug and play directly into anyone’s computer to deliver the files and having enough space to not worry about having to stop filming things that I can’t stop or reshoot. As far as the mattebox, this mattebox was designed by tilta to be able to use a screw on filter and was designed to be light enough for gimbal use. Why? Because why not? Screw on filters now days don’t have the issues that they use to have and they are very convenient for small crews and quick setups. It’s about having options for people who use these tools in different ways. I went over why each and every part was important for me. You don’t just pile stuff on a camera just to show off, especially on KZbin when you can easily look at kits that cost many many times more. Everyone has different needs and desires which is exactly what I went over at the beginning of the video.
