There is some Egyptian mythology going on, the scarab represents life cycles and rebirth.(Sun and moon) Erika is lost in a dessert;unurtured, empty,in a transitional phase of life. Going in circles? repeating same mistakes? Her high hat might be a search for higher "self knowledge" and wisdom. Alchemical? Godlike? She drags the weight of her past that which is uninportant, and manipulated, burdens, lies,fears... she has fallen in lifes trap the matrix if you will. The sun is seting she is in a resting period she is regenerating herself to be born anew. She emerges from a womb of water she is now nurtured, replenished and cleansed. Naked and pure. Now the crops... aliens and origins? we are all one in the vast universe... cycles transformation. evolution the mysteries and occult.

It's so perfect that tears fill my eyes, even after all this time. I first heard this at age 14, as a newbie musician. Now I'm 36. And the words to her songs just hit deeper. It's just amazing. From the lyrics, the poetry, and the video's imagery to the subtle musical arrangements and chill & smoky jazz club vibes. Erykah is the vessel of self expression but also a vessel of universal expression, Black female expression, and so much more, I hope she knows this... she's influenced so many strong black women (and men!) but also some mixed/white boy musicians here, too!! Lol. And not only me... and yes, I do realize that "perfection", in any sense of the word, is an illusion; but Ms Erykah Badu, you exude something intangible that is, to your fans and followers, quite perfect in what it is. ✌🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️

It is because we're black. No other race can express themselves like this. Fact. We have more soul. It's in our blood. This is fact. You think a Latino or Arab can sing with this type soul? No one does like it is period

As a 44 yr old white guy who fell in love with hip hop and rnb in the late 80s there have been hundreds of these songs that I love but there are a select few that I feel define the term greatness and this is one of them. Couldn’t believe this when it came out 20-some years ago in 2000. The layering in the first minute is purely sublime. JDilla was born to create music-RIP. And Erykah is an rnb legend now.

it also happens to be unfortunate that a lot of good music like eryhah badu or the fugees or even the people originally surrounding bob marleys music (at least some of the who claim to anyways), are historically super racist against white people whether or not we buy their albums ;w; can you blame them though, listen to what their music is about, its no surprise really.

This is so funny. When I was younger, my older cousins used to hate Erkyah Badu and always said she was weird and crazy. I laughed with them and thought the same thing because I didn't understand. Now I'm older, and I'm able to understand her and her music, she's become a favorite of mine. Such a beautiful person and beautiful music. Much respect to this woman!

Niesha B Now what does this make you think about media cultures pushed onto young african american people. How supreme is her message? How come youth think she is weird? These are the questions we should be asking and the answers we come up with need to be abolished from our culture. The answers are obvious to be honest. Peace.
