Bill Holland The juries were kissing your ass all the years of eurovision that's why you got higher places. Ever since the televoting started, the public rarely gives you high points. And let's face it, for a country with such great music scene as England is you don't send good songs to the song contest. Last one I liked was Imaani in 1998. A long time ago..
@artsed086 жыл бұрын
Why would the juries kiss our arse? And if they did, why did they decide not to do so in 1978 or 1987, for example?... Up until the 90s we did send acts who were relevant in the chart music world, like Cliff, Lulu, Mary Hopkin, The New Seekers, Olivia, Sonia, Gina G. They did well at the contest, well in the UK charts, and sold millions of records. By 2000, the UK had lost its monopoly on producing quality pop music and since then the only artists the BBC has been able to attract are hopeful newbies or desperate old-timers - credible British acts have steered well clear. That's coincided with a concentrated media and political campaign to convince the British people that Europeans HATE us and that's why we never win, which is bullshit... Hopefully things are turning a corner now, and after two decades in the wilderness, it's about time.

I like it, but it clearly has the "old school Eurovision" sound to it, meaning that it is a little formulaic and cheesy, but well sung. But there was a live orchestra for this song, in almost every Eurovision song before 1999 (with a handful of exceptions) will have it. I'm really surprised that you didn't recognize the name, Katrina and the Waves made Walking On Sunshine and they somehow ended up at Eurovision. Also, lol at Katrina looking like a middle aged mom, never thought of that before.

This is a great song! Feel good to the max! It was a well deserved win in my book! I was thirteen that year (born 1984), and I think you and I are not too far off in age? And yeah, my mom looked a bit like that too! And yes, there was a live orchestra! I kinda miss those days, it was a treat! Also, I’d like you to react to a song that didn’t win Eurovision, but is friggin EPIC: Stad i ljus by Tommy Körberg (in my opinion the best Swedish singer of the last fifty friggin years), that was Sweden’s entry in 1988. It didn’t do very well, probably because Tommy had been sick during all the general rehearsals - which was what the juries had to react to. I’ll add a link to the performance in Melodifestivalen in a comment!

It may be 21 years since they had a win but the United Kingdom still has the best overall record in eurovision and one that I can't see being broken anytime soon. Not only have they won 5 times (yes I know a handful of countries have more wins) but they have come second 15 times!! At one point the UK ruled Eurovision. From 1957 to 1999 they only missed the top 10 twice. What happened in 1999? The introduction of singing in any language you like. Only this didn't happen, what happened was that 99% of entries sing in English, meaning that the UK, Malta and Ireland were screwed.
