Well, I'm still waiting for Belarus to submit their song for 2021's contest. I only want to do the one "Before Show" ranking so I'll have to be patient.
While waiting, I went back and ranked last year's songs. If you watched my ranking last year, you'll probably notice a lot of the songs are in similar positions but I've made new comments and there are SOME big changes (maybe a new winner?).
Please leave comments below about what you think of the ranking, the comments or just share your thoughts about last year's songs/contest. Let's get talking about it!

I think it's a bit harsh on Greece but that's a bottom five I can live with. 😂 At the top, we have three of the same songs in our top five and Albania's a bit of an acquired taste so I'm happy to see that. Honestly, I have to go down to Belgium in 7th to find a major disagreement so not bad!

@@kaleproject3495 yeah like i said, Greece doesn't get my award for "Worst Song"....that would probably be Latvia, just for the drop alone. But its just an amalgamation of all the things i hate about current pop music, especially current youth-driven pop music. And full disclosure, i don't know if i'd have Albania that high if it were just "Fall From the Sky" (though not too far from there so don't worry about it showing up in the basement or something lol), but "Shaj" was my #1 for the longest time and until Diodato's stadium rendition of "Fai rumore", her FiK final performance was my favorite live performance of everything offered. Now lets see if we disagree this harshly on Belgium and Austria again this year. I know we will on Belgium cuz we already partially discussed that on a different video, but i'll wait for your video to see if Vincent remains alive in your eyes. :p

It wasn’t even in my top 20 last year but over the past month i just fell in love with it. I hope Arilena will come back to esc in the future, she is just such a great artist. 1000/10 3 Romania - amazing! 11/10 4 Norway- also amazing. 11/10 I love this 4 songs a lot 😂😍💜💙

Oh, I LOVE Fai Rumore! Deserved first place here 😊. I do not make tops for myself but every year I have 3-4 favourite songs and hope that one of them will also win ESC. Preferably the country who haven't won yet or did it long time ago. Plus, for me the winning song should ideally not be very similar to previous year's winner. Keeping that in mind, last year my two favourites were clearly Iceland and Lithuania, slightly preferring Iceland though. That's why I'm a bit sad because this year, Iceland probably doesn't have a chance to win - but they really deserved it in 2020. Think About Things is just so fresh, positive and enjoyable, it would've been a perfect winner of ESC... Répondez-moi and Tears Getting Sober are absolutely my kind of music. But after Arcade (it was also one of my winners in 2019) I'd preferred something different to win, something not too dark and deep. Maybe it's unfair to think that way and I should take every song by itself but I can't help this broader context has some influence on me. I also enjoy listening Alive! Maybe it's a song that can easily be unnoticed and therefore underrated in ESC but actually it's so catchy and has a really pleasant vibe so you just want to listen it again and again. I liked it immedately from the first listening. Albania's song "worked" for me only in Albanian, not in English, unfortunately. Never understood why they decided to change the language.

I do think that Eurovision winners tend not to be too similar to each other year-upon-year, despite many countries doing what they can to emulate last year's winner. I think the actual contest would've come down to Italy and Iceland, with me strongly believing Iceland were going to come out on top. I don't actually think Iceland are out of it this year. We've never had this situation where we haven't had a contest in the previous year so it should be interesting to see if Iceland being such a strong favourite hurts them in 2020, whether having a "similar" song will put people off or whether it'll make no difference at all and most people will be seeing it for the first time. I always thought "Alive" was going to get the result that some fans were expecting Germany to get. I think it's a better song and it definitely has the better performer. Every year has surprise results and Austria/Czech Rep were going to be the ones that exceeded expectations (in my opinion). I'm thinking of making an "ideal" Eurovision 2020 video with my NF winners instead of the songs chosen. Then, I can allowed "Shaj" to compete. I think it would do well. 😂

I must really say, you've become my go-to channel for well made top videos. I love your sleek design (how do you do that?) and your well written comments! As for the entries: Man, Denmark really made it from love to hate with you, I remember they were your #3 in your DMGP top I think. I must admit in my top it's also steadily falling, it once was my #3, but right now I have it on #15. Australia on the other hand rose from #29 to #9! Belarus is my winner after all. I see why many people don't like it, and it definitely wouldn't have qualified, but somehow I really love it! And Lithuania, well, I'm glad you see the problem I always saw in it. Despite hating everything about it with passion, it also annoyed me how badly paced it is, the second half just repeats the chorus and instrumental part over and over and over. And the funny thing is, initially I had it at #39 above Armenia and France, but their revamps rose them a lot, so Lithuania ended up on my last place.😂 And your winner, well, it's my #40, but I don't hate it, I just fail to see anything about it that I like.

Thanks for the kind comments about the videos! I definitely don't think the design is *that* sleek compared to some of the other YTers. Basically, my software for making videos is really basic and has no options for text pretty much...so I make all my text as image files and then manually animate. It's painful but I also think it's much improved from when I started. 😂 I did used to have "Yes" pretty high in DMGP but really, what does that mean? It's DMGP after all! 😂Belarus as a winner and Lithuania last would certainly make your top stand out from the rest! Nothing wrong with that. I actually prefer it when songs that don't get much love from tops and the actual voting at ESC have their big fans. Makes it all worthwhile they're being there!

ABSOLUTELY AGREE Diodato will be always my #1 of 2020 That song basically became the anthem of the quarantine and I was so sad when the contest was cancelled because I immediately knew that I wasn't getting to see Diodato next year, for simple reasons: 1) I knew Italy wouldn't select him internally and I knew they were going to do Sanremo again 2) I knew that Diodato wouldn't even take part to Sanremo 2021 because (no joke) winning Sanremo is super hard and winning Eurovision in comparison is child's play Missed a great song to be performed, an amazing result for Italy and a good time overall.

You're not wrong about any of those things. I'm just choosing to be really positive about it and not focusing on how it was a missed opportunity. I got the Verona performance and that might just be enough for me. I definitely think you're right about Sanremo and how difficult it is, especially for singer-songwriters, to come up with something that can win.

30-21 30.this is very Katy Perry, "Fireworks" stuff but i like it? Its so relentlessly positive and upbeat, but it's so well-produced (for me at least) and Lesley maintains a consistent, ferocious energy throughout that it gets lifted to my top 15. 29. those lyrics.....oh those lyrics. Sonically, its good and meaty, but those lyrics.....lol 28. its a nice party song and a celebration of life, but she almost does too much and yet, too little. 27. its that dark and mysterious electronica vibe song that almost always works with me. Still in my top 10, though not quite top 5. Though i admit, i have no idea how they would successfully stage this, especially with the non-chorus hook. 26.i still feel like this is a whole lot of build up without enough pay off, which keeps it down on my list some, but its still a fascinating journey at times, which saves it. 25.this is another one i go back-and-forth on.....sonically, the music and the way everything slots together is BRILLIANT to me (especially in the "je taime" sections), reminding me of some stuff i listened to and loved growing up (Deftones, et al,....). i'm never disappointed when listening to it. But Tornike's lyrics and singing are really whiny? But its actually a great middle finger to everything ESC stands for? Its hanging out in my top 15, but could easily go either way. If nothing else, it inspires reactions in me.
@kaleproject3495
@kaleproject3495 3 жыл бұрын
A few thoughts from me! Georgia: I'm totally getting the middle finger vibe now that I go back and listen to this, particularly in those lyrics. Combined with his song this year and some of his comments recently, I've gone back and started to think that he was deliberately putting in "bad" lyrics to wind people up. N.Macedonia: I have the same thought about Vasil. If you were casting a musical on the West End, he'd be one of the first people involved in it. He really is multi-talented and can do a bit of everything. He's got the most wonderful personality as well. BUT, exactly how do you take him and get a successful Eurovision entry out of him. Hypothetically what would it sound or look like? I honestly don't know. Sweden: Top three is a little bit of a shock. Obviously, the Mamas can be a top three talent at Eurovision but I feel in the last two years, both songs just don't go big enough at any point to make that happen. They're almost not Eurovision-y enough for me. In "Move", the Ooo-ooo, Ooo-ooo's were just the songwriting of somebody who couldn't be bothered to see it through. 😂 Spain: I don't want to go into how much I love Blas Canto as a talent (2021 video coming!) but I really do. If Universo had been just another song from him, I'd actually really like it. I do think that if you take out the vocals and just go to the music itself, there's nothing ESC-level great about this one though. It's one of those that's good but not good enough that Spain could avoid being underrated again.
@Agju
@Agju 3 жыл бұрын
@@kaleproject3495 yeah, Tornike does not seem happy about being in ESC. Or at the very least, it was never his dream. Lol Yeah, even looking at his song this year, without going into too much now since the 2021 list is still forthcoming, it does not 'feel' like an ESC song. Tamara managed to pull it off beautifully, but was this THE song for Vasil? Sweden, I just really love The Mamas! They're professional, they're charming, they're beautiful, they can bop move and sing, they're a total package! This performance always gives me a good feeling, a rush of goodwill, like the Belarusian entry but on a much bigger level. Their vocals FILL the arena effortlessly, better than the usual laser show that Melfest is. The song itself is still good. Paced well, full of good moments and I would say the "ooh-oooh" acts as a through line, a recurring element that keeps the song moving at a specific feel and level. If nothing else, its a lode-bearing ooh-oooh. Lol. Its an incredibly effective pop soul gospel song that always gives me a rise. :) Blas, I was sure I'd hate him but Universo snuck up on me. It managed to stay in my top 10 almost all the way through. Not as high on VyQ atm but I still like him.

France - The new version is better imo, but still, the song is too cheesy, even for me 36. Azerbaijan - I remember loving it the first time I heard this. Ever since, it has just moved down in my top. Probably THE grown-off song for me this year with Denmark 35. Estonia 34. Sweden - Good singers, ok song, but Sweden please, imma say it clearly: TAKE SOME RISKS 33. Finland - Eh, this over 'Eternity' or 'Cicciolina' ?? Not bad entry at all, but juries really trying to mess up our ESC-songs 😂😂 32. Lithuania - Overrated. Amazing performers, but just an ok song 31. Armenia 30. Denmark - This used to be in my top 10. I still like it, but it just doesn't catch me that much anymore 29. United Kingdom 28. Cyprus 27. Russia 26. Poland - Okay, lyrically disaster in places, but it's still so epic and those vocals

I guess it just becomes a matter of numbers, right? Plenty of people didn't see much of anything in Italy or Iceland last year and one of them was probably going to win the whole thing. 😂 I've had Azerbaijan comments on videos where there was no Azerbaijan taking part (such as NF roundups) so yeah, Azeri ESC fans let loose on KZbin can really be something. 😂 It's not just them but there are certain countries where the fans *really* mobilise at ESC time and it can be a bit much for one little old comment section!

couldve been a really amazing year tbh, there was no clear cut winner and so many songs couldve been elevated so much more with a proper liveshow my top 41 01 - Lithuania - On Fire (it's been my 1st since it won PiN. i just love the quirkiness of them and i wished i could dance with them live) 02 - Sweden - Move (deserved winners of Melfest imo. i legit jumped with joy when i saw them winning it by one point) 03 - Bulgaria - Tears Getting Sober (it did grew on me a lot. very disney like and i really love her as an artist) 04 - Latvia - Still Breathing (its a guilty pleasure tbh. i sometimes love jarring songs like this for no reason) 05 - Malta - All of My Love (great voice, boppy song, what else do you want? oh yea Borislav. i love it a lot) 06 - Germany - Violent Thing (great track. fit for the radio. couldve been Germany's turning point) 07 - Romania - Alcohol You (i am a sucker for women ballads or such. i really like Roxen's voice tbh) 08 - Iceland - Think About Things (lovely song. legit could not be mad at the song and Dadi is really charming) 09 - Belgium - Release Me (idk why i like it but i like it. it feels sophisticated and Bond-ish and it works for me) 10 - The Netherlands - Grow (i love the song a lot tbh. it connects to me on a personal level. only problem is that it ends abruptly) 11 - Finland - Looking Back (i already liked it before UMK and i still like it now. he's a capable singer and the song feels genuine) 12 - Czechia - Kemama (african vibes worked for me. Benny is a really capable performer) 13 - Switzerland - Répondez-moi (couldn't connect to it the first time but it did grew on me. Tout l'univers is miles better tbh) 14 - Ireland - Story of My Life (hits me back to my 2000s. it's a nostalgic feel and i love Lesley tbh) 15 - VAL - Da vidna (despite being laid back af, i actually like it! her vocals probably can be improved but the laziness works) 16 - Norway - Attention (i probably have the same opinion as you. it's missing something) 17 - North Macedonia - You (i really wanted to see how they staged this tbh. its a type of pop i like for some reason) 18 - Georgia - Take Me As I Am (grew off me a lot. i did realise that its literally a rock song with Tornike shouting) 19 - Russia - UNO (could've been better. i dont exactly like how they wanted to perform it but it works i guess) 20 - Spain - Universo (what a voice from Blas though. it does get stuck in my head a lot tbh) 21 - Greece - Superg!rl (its an ok song. Stefania might have the voice but i feel like Last Dance is better) 22 - Israel - Feker Libi (i was pretty happy it won but then i realised just how well Eden peformed Roots, which made me fall out with this song) 23 - Azerbaijan - Cleopatra (not a fan of the prechorus at all. could be better tbh) 24 - Cyprus - Running (the song could've seriously been so much better if the chorus had more umph) 25 - Ukraine - Solovey (not a fan of whatever genre they are. the dubstep part doesn't really work) 26 - Armenia - Chains on You (what a revamp though. still not the biggest fan but it works) 27 - Croatia - Divlji vjetre (balkan ballads work most of the time. this could've been much better) 28 - Italy - Fai rumore (something was really missing with this song. Diodato is a really good performer but i couldn't connect with this) 29 - Austria - Alive (an ok radio song. too weak for eurovision sadly) (too lazy to comment the rest tbh except your favs) 30 - San Marino - Freaky! 31 :flag_ee: What Love Is 32 - France - Mon alliée 33 :flag_rs: Hasta La Vista (not a fan of the girl trio vibe. something was really off with the song) 34 :flag_al: Fall from the Sky (i really dont like the revamp. Arilena is such a good singer but god i can't deal with this song) 35 :flag_md: Prison 36 :flag_pt: Medo de sentir 37 :flag_dk: Yes 38 :flag_pl: Empires 39 :flag_au: Don't Break Me 40 :flag_gb: My Last Breath 41 :flag_si: Voda

Haha. A few of my favourites struggled in your list but I'm glad to see that you kept Denmark and Poland right next to each, towards the bottom. 😂 A few thoughts: - I see Lithuania 2020 anywhere from people's #1 to their last places. I think "Discoteque" is similar in that way, too. They always say that at ESC, it's better to inspire that sort of reaction. Hopefully, we'll get to see it play out. - A lot of appreciate for Milanov in your ranking! I'm definitely finding that I'm liking his songs less nowadays. I'm really starting to see the same repeating faults and starting to find them harder to get over. - My dislike for Belgium is pretty strong so I'm quite curious where you think BOTH the Hooverphonic entries stack up against Belgium 2016-2018 where they went with similar sounds. - Sad to see Italy so low. Even without connecting to the song, I'd expect it to rank higher than "Ok" songs like Greece or Israel just due to its quality but oh well. 😂 I won't go through *everything* but I did enjoy reading the feedback. Thanks!

@@kaleproject3495 yea im kind of a Milanov fanboy actually. i love the songs Symphonix produces so most of the time they do get high spots (Colours in Dora 2021 was quite a stepdown though). i might be appreciating Dardust more nowadays though. Italian pop is REALLY good Belgium is quite a powerhouse in 2016-2018 and i do really like their entries during that time (giving a slight exception to 2018 because god the live was awful). i still think 2016-2018 belgium is really good (especially Blanche, my winner) but i really like both Hooverphonic and these years so its really hard to say which one i like more. 2019 belgium is the big exception though, i really hated the live.

@@Zakrusta It's not that I don't like Milanov's stuff anymore, I just don't think it's at the level that he was at. I mean, it's only naturally when you're asked to produce more that the overall quality goes down. TGS is still a good song but yeah, I think the misses are starting to outnumber the hits. Dardust, however, is putting out consistently great music. Have to see if he keeps it up as he becomes in greater and great demand! I didn't think 2019 Belgium was as great a song as the others in that time period. It lacked an effective chorus, something that all of the other entries really delivered on. The live performance didn't help but Blanche and Sennek both had weak live performances where the song was strong enough to carry them. I'm interested to see how Hooverphonic do as I can't see their music really appealing to the televote. Will the juries overrate them highly enough to do well? We'll have to see!

41-31 41. its just a very loud, insistent wall of noise. lol i don't hate it as much as you do, but i don't love it either. i also noticed that, for a song about being so desperately in love, they almost never actually performed TOGETHER. Like, she would be behind him or be turned to the side and he's ALWAYS looking forward. Far from the romantic chemistry of, say, Netherlands 2014 or even the cool soul mingling of Slovenia 2019. lol 40.I have such a hate boner for this song....its my bottom third because for everything its attempting, trying to be this epic warrior of a song about empires and strife and intense love, it really does not have the weight it needs to support all that. Plus everything feels clipped and rushed, such that no one element, including her singing, is really given a chance to BREATHE. Even her big glory note at the end just kinda....stops...after a second. She's a little girl trying to play a queen's game and it doesn't work this time. 39. i don't hate it, but i don't begrudge anyone who dislikes it. I remember reading that Tom is a comedian or a comic actor or something so i keep expecting SOMETHING funny and like...no? Its a factoid that's fucked up my perception of who he is and what he delivers. lol 38. this is one that HAS taken a bit of a tumble on my list because listening to the track itself, it IS very thin, but that performance brings me so much joy that this entry will probably never be outside of my Top 30 37. yeah, this is not very interesting and seeing what he had for this year's UMK just makes me think Aksel is not that interesting, for me at least, as an artist. 36.this is in my bottom two because for me, it's the most obnoxious, try-hard song of 2020. I hate the chanting sections too because they bring the song to a dead halt each time imo, the way they've worked them in. 35. easy top 10 for me. its classy and beautiful, like a Bond theme or something. We def disagree on this one by a lot. 34. Australia is the new Sweden, with all these songs that are almost TOO slickly produced ("We Got Love" excluded). I appreciate the package, but i keep wondering how much i actually LIKE it. Montaigne also doesn't seem to have the most gravitas as an artist. 33. awww i love our little country of kitsch, San Marino! Even though i don't subscribe to the notion of "guilty pleasures" (we should just like what we like without being ashamed of it....within reason ofc), but this would be the closest to what i'd call a guilty pleasure. Just the way the whole thing is put together, from the lyrics ("we'll make new rules and break those too!"), to the styling, to the overindulgent video and the...."dancing"...shouts, "'cool mom' who thinks she's still got 'it' and no...not with this. "Adrenalina" yes, but not with "Freaky!". Still like it though :) 32.this one is very frustrating to me. Portugal is my fav Eurovision country so i ALWAYS want to give the Portuguese entries more credit, maybe even more than they deserve, so i had her in my top 20 at one point, but....where is the singing? I know she's singing, but i never detect much modulation or FEELING in what she's doing. The music will crescendo or the strings will swell and she....stays in that soft monotone? i feel like the song is doing things that she's NOT doing as a singer. 31. this is the other "most obnoxious song" and a lot of it is that INSANELY annoying buzzsaw drop. THIS is what Aminata is giving these days?? So this, as a song, is bottom five for me, possibly even last, but what saves it is Samanta's performance. I BELIEVE this is a natural extension of who she is and her stage performance explodes with energy.

Unfortunately the jury said they were sixth and they classified third. But Diodato could convince the jury... Måneskin? I mean, they're cool and everything, but unfortunately I think they don't have big chances: -Italy is well known for pop love songs, obviously not for rock and probably someone will be disappointed. -Finland also has a rock song with more instrumental complexity, but most importantly they sing in english! We all know that English and French songs always are the most successful. I think we could win 2021 Eurovision if we sent Musica leggerissima (Colapesce anf Dimartino), Chiamami per nome (Fedez and Francesca Michielin) or Il farmacista (Max Gazzè). Last group of thoughts! Armenia: I just need Athena on stage, in front of a camera. That girl is a natural and works it. Austria: You don't even like the opening of it? I'm a bit fan of that part. I actually think it's one of the best parts of any song that year. Vincent, as a performer, makes it more than just a basic song for me though. Switzerland: One of my other regular commenters feels the exact opposite and much prefers this year's Swiss entry. 😂 Me, without giving too much away, I like both of them and really appreciate the quality of the songwriting that Gjon's had in both entries. Romania: I keep telling myself to stop comparing Bulgaria and Romania but it's hard not to. Both years I've struggled to find any way that Bulgaria is better than Romania. I think it was closer in 2020 but I've always felt that Victoria looks like she's *trying* to be something, whereas Roxen just is. I think you need to come across as genuine when delivering this sort of music and I just buy into Roxen a lot more. 😂 Italy: Iceland, by all measurables, looks like it was the nailed-on winner last year. The hype was real. Then, I go back and watch Verona. For me, it's Salvador Sobral all over again. It's almost like instant connection and I just can't imagine Italy not winning. I know it seems odd to say, especially considering how much I love him and his music but, I am glad that Diodato didn't come back for 2021 because THIS needs to be his contribution to ESC.

@@kaleproject3495 Austria, I mean, the opening is a standard "smooth loverboy" trick. "Let me do this slow singing right up front and get that out of the way, just to give the ladies a taste". Nadav did it for "Golden Boy". Alexey did it for "Get You." It feels like a calculated attempt to hook someone, which I guess is the point of entertainment, but when used in such a false way can feel kinda sleazy. "Hey I can be a party boy, baby, but I'm also sensitive! Ya heard me?" It feels like pick-up artist stuff sometimes. Then the rest of the song gives a sense of cohesion but is very vague and slightly unfocused. Is he singing about a girl? Is he singing about taking over the world? Is he singing about a girl who gives him the strength to take over the world? Is it about him, her, or both? So it feels like he's going down a checklist of what he thinks we want to hear. Soft crooning intro to show off vocals? Check. Relatable lyrics about love without being too specific? Check. Relatable lyrics about aiming for your dreams? Check. Pulsing pop and bass beat that wouldn't be out of place on a Timberlake or Bruno Mars or Michael Jackson album? Check. If nothing else, its like how you feel about t Dotter. If I understand correctly, you feel like nothing she's done is unique to her and even then its not done particularly well. Vincent does his thing well, but it feels EXTREMELY derivative. Roxen and Victoria feel like two sides of the same coin, besides the Billie Eilish comparison. Victoria takes a very measured approach as you say, while Roxen just acts on her impulses. Both can work when done right. Last year, I felt Victoria did better and this year, I'm feeling Roxen is doing better (without giving too much away though). As weird as it sounds, I do agree on Diodato. Some people win and come back to diminishing returns. Was Dana International ever going to replicate "Diva"? Was it smart to trot out Niamh for a music scene almost 20 years removed from the one that allowed her to win? And did anyone believe Alexander could come anywhere near "Fairytale"? So as much as Salvador is my favorite of all time, his first go around was perfection and trying to get lightning to strike again could tarnish that. I wouldn't mind if Diodato came back but did the immeasurable success of that stadium performance kill any reasonable chance of that happening? If nothing else, he'd need to bring something as good as "Fai rumore" but for us, who loved it a lot (a number of people didn't so his return might be more successful for them), are our expectations too high? Its quite the dilemma

@@Agju Hmm. I didn't really think about it like that. I suppose I've never listened to Vincent Bueno or watched his performances without knowing a little about his background. The fact that he is a really nice guy probably does elevate his songs and give them a bit more meaning than they should have as standalone. Also, when coupled with this year's entry, I can totally take on the point that, lyrically, I have no idea what the hell his point is supposed to be. 😂 I mean the comparisons are there for Roxen-Victoria. It's not going away because Billie is one of the most influential artists of our times and NOT a style that we generally get at ESC in any form. Any sort of similarity was going to be exaggerated. I will ALSO not give too much away apart from saying that I think Roxen-Victoria's entries were CLOSER in quality last year than this year. I definitely think one is MUCH stronger than the other this time around. 😂 All are good points for those artists mentioned but, for me, I think it's a different case with Diodato. I know this sounds strange but I don't want the 2020 contest to become like it was never a thing at all. In time, people are going to remember Dadi, The Roop, Victoria, Roxen etc. for either their 2020-2021 songs as a pairing or simply, as just their 2021 songs. Diodato's song just FEELS like it was our 2020 winner...in a year of great music. Part of me doesn't want that to be diminished in any way.

@@kaleproject3495 oh I'm not saying Vincent is a douchebag. I haven't seen anything to make me think he's a bad guy (pun not intended, per all the Billie Eilish talk), but his entry last year was a competent bouncy track and not much more in my eyes. So I don't begrudge you for giving your favorites a boost. I do it all the time with Portugal and I did it with Senhit and Serhat the last two years. My love for what they were doing made me keep them higher than they probably deserved (Serhat can't really sing for shit, for instance lol). I had heard someone compare Victoria to Lana Del Rey. Maybe? I mean, she does kinda blithely croon over lilting music. This year, she's more "solid" but I think Roxen is more "effective"...although I've been noticing the vocoder effects on her voice more and more and I'm not sure I like that. Diodato, yeah I don't want him to diminish that stadium performance.

@@Agju I don't even think it's a boost because I like him but rather, it kinda mitigates what the song *could* be about. For example, Benjamin Ingrosso singing the exact same song, the exact same way, would probably be a good 10 places lower in my ranking because it becomes something else if HE were to do it. Another example would be Czech Rep 2018. That song is awful on every level to me but Miklas Josef, honestly, is just not that guy. So it probably gets a couple of places up because again, the message is *slightly* different when he's the one delivering it. 😂 I still hate the song, just in case you were wondering! I do not know if any of that made sense. I think I've gone over my feelings about Victoria quite a lot in the Bulgarian selection video and, I will go over it again in the 2021 ranking, but yeah...I find when you're not doing much vocally, from a talent perspective, and not delivering a live performance that particularly requires a physical talent, you've either got to a) connect the hell with the song and get that connection across or b) absolutely radiate star power. I still don't think she manages either, sadly.

20-11 20. my #1 for the longest time. i would argue that what the song is going for is maintaining a consistent, foreboding groove that really suits the topic of forbidden love. to do too much in it would kill the vibe and this is SUCH a high-level "vibe song" for me. You don't go on a rollercoaster; you ride the wave. So that, and Kateryna's carefully delivered vocals/presence and the ethnic touches really make for an amazing package. 19.my last place, not because its the worst song overall, objectively speaking, but because it contains so many of the things i hate about modern pop music. Lazy verses, building the entire song around the drop and the buildup to the drop, trying to fill space with random spoken fragments and "na nas" or "la las" (the nieces and nephews of "Ohhh-OHHH-Ohhhh_OHHHH, weee-OHHH")....its a perfect storm of all the things that bug me. 18. this is another one that has taken a tumble for me. I loooove the backing track but everything else is typical "dangerous loverboy/affair" song, right down to some twink-y white guy trying to convince me he's just so ready for that sweet action. lol P.S. whoever did the lighting for that video should be fired. :p 17. another one i appreciate more than i actually like. Ulrikke's a terrific singer and its a well-put together song, but this feels like shameless ESC bait. Less an honest declaration of who she is as an artist or a person and more of a plea for votes from the Norwegian delegation. Nothing wrong with playing the game, but doesn't mean i have to love it. 16. i was initially certain this would be one of my bottom choices but it always manages to hang on in the middle. Good song. But i agree with you on its faults. 15. another underrated one. Damir does a great job. 14. I keep thinking of Little Big as a "much more palatable version of Die Antwoord" lol. Anyway, i was always cautious at first with this one because i thought, by its very nature as a bit of a troll, that it would get annoying after a while, but i find myself liking it MORE as time goes on. Its a fun little song you can throw on anytime, whether you need a pick-me-up or just want something to listen to. Love it! And them. I keep wondering who they would get rid of if this went to ESC cuz of the 6 performer rule; the obvious one out for me is the second girl, but maybe that'd be too much of a sausage fest for people. XD 13. i too find this quirky and charming. its certainly a lot more believable and organic than "Discoteque" and juuuust over-the-top enough to be noticeable without being completely overbearing, again...like "Discoteque". Not to give away my 2021 list before your video on the subject but you can probably guess i won't be ranking "Discoteque" very high. "On Fire" has enough appeal to stay in my top 20 though, even if it does commit a sin that i've grown to penalize songs for since listening to Eurovision entries: too much reliance on lalalas. Yes i know its a storied ESC tradition, but no, please. 12. a wonderful and bombastic class act of a song. "Luxury" is the word that comes to mind because of the instrumentation and Ana's vocals. 11. if i had to explain all the reasons i hate The Dadi Freyr Experience, we'd be here allllll day. So i'll just say....No. Not the worst thing ever, but no way this gets out of my bottom 10. Okay, i will say ONE reason; it feels like he keeps submitting THE EXACT SAME SONG every year ("Is This Love" to "Think About Things" to "10 Years" could all be the same song with slightly different lyrics as far as i know). Not just 'similar' or 'a signature sound', but the same thin, uninteresting song.

More thoughts! Greece: Don't really disagree with you about anything. It's not my favourite song and it's not anywhere close to her song this year. I can also understand how a song that doesn't seem that offensive to most people (see my #41 here) can really make you hate it if it does all the things you don't like in music. Norway: I think I summed it up pretty well. It's a great song for winning MGP but for ESC, it's not really anything we haven't heard before. Russia: I was fully expecting to hate everything about this but I ended up not only liking this song, but liking almost everything I've heard from them. I have this (annoyingly) innate ability to appreciate star quality and they just have so much of it. When they're on stage, they're just so good. I don't think the backing singer girl and the facial haired backing singer guy would've went to ESC. They're not actually part of the group. 😂 Iceland: I'm kinda lucky in that this is the sort of music that I grew up listening to so I can notice differences between the songs. I also love his vocals. Having said that, I do believe TAT is the weakest of the three he's submitted. But like Israel 2018, pre-contest hype can take the place of actual quality and lead you to a win....and this song definitely had the hype.

@@kaleproject3495 Norway almost got away with it though cuz A LOT of these other rankers had Ulrikke at or near the top. Norway has come on strong for me in recent years (but i'll get into that on the 2021 video), but Ulrikke wasn't it for me. Russia, its just such a fun song that you don't have to think about and its well-crafted for what it is. I don't think people go into The Little Big Experience expecting Shakespearean verve and subtlety. I also have a crush on Yuriy so I would want him to stay. Its just that obviously we can't get rid of the four main people and the voguing fat guy in the jumpsuit was a breakout star, so that leaves Yuriy and Florida and between those two, Florida's out. Lol I also have a weird crush on Anton but don't tell anyone. :p

@@kaleproject3495 oh also, i'm sure Dadi's songs do differ and i'll find those differences if i wanted, but The Dadi Freyr Experience is not one i'm terribly interested in. I exceeded my twee limit with Leonora the year before. XD

@@Agju I'll forgive you for comparing Dadi with one of my least liked ESC entries of all time. 😂 It is pretty niche though. I think that was maybe the reason that the 2020 entry went over so big. The gimmickness made it more accessible than his other music.

@@kaleproject3495 what Toy hath wrought....and now Toy Pt. 2, Je Me Casse, is the favorite in the odds atm. Last year seemed like the year of gimmicky dances; even Go_A had one for a second. I'm just glad that this year is not repeating last year's Dadi Roop onslaught. I haven't seen as much overwhelming support for those two, while more standard ESC fare like Switzerland, Malta, and France's entries are at the top.

Italy is terribly overrated just does not have the power and talent supposedly the majority thought, the United States would never accept this group

The 2020 Italian entry? Or the 2021 entry? I like both but definitely prefer 2020 for my own taste. 😂
