Fox Kids never finished their edited version of this series on television (cancelled due to low ratings), although I understand YTV in Canada did air all of the edited dub. As I remember, Fox Kids aired the edited dub (for a little while anyway) about the same time as Bandai began releasing the unedited English dub VHS and bilingual DVDs. I recall first seeing the show on tv then going to Suncoast every couple months to purchase the next dubbed VHS volume in the series as they became available. I eventually bought Bandai's DVD set. Btw, the subtitled VHS collection of Escaflowne was available starting in the late 90's through Anime Village (eventually absorbed by Bandai). Fox Kids did actually release their edited version on VHS, but stopped after I think four volumes after cancelling the show on tv. Thus, I'm not entirely sure you can find the whole edited version of the series unless you recorded it off YTV.
@helamsirrine6 жыл бұрын
That is my story almost exactly, except I bought the subtitled VHS tapes at Suncoast. I bought the first tape of the Fox Kids version, but then I found out that it was butchered and missing the whole first episode. At least I got the free tarot card deck... had it in my drawer for years. It's really amazing how much footage from episode 1 they used in this OP, considering that they cut the entire episode from broadcast because it introduced a girl as the protagonist. The real travesty was how they edited in this technobeat in place of Kanno's ost during the show... fkn phillistines.

@jaketheripper73854 жыл бұрын
@Jungle Bunny ehhh, sort of. We can primarily thank Toonami and the growing abundance of internet forums and media sharing platforms for that honestly, as well as the growing number of homes with a computer that had an ethernet port and web access. Although even then, it was still considered pretty obscure and almost even a bit taboo in many circles. In 2000 I would have been 10 years old, so mostly watching Dragonball Z, Ronin Warriors (still one of my all time favorites), Outlaw Star, and it would have been right around the first time I ever saw Akira, which was my first foray into subbed anime. I also saw "Escaflowne: The Movie" or "Escaflowne 2000" as it's often referred to shortly after it released in the states. That said, I would argue that it wasn't until 2004 to 2005 or so that anime became an official "mainstream" entity in the west. By this point, the internet had become essentially universally accessible and "Otaku culture" had a much more abundant presence both online and within the 'Con circuits in Europe and North America. Many "closeted" anime lovers had begun coming out of the proverbial woodwork, and began wearing their love for anime openly on their sleeves, as it were. It's really quite fascinating so far as being its own sociocultural microcosm that operated "under the radar" for years until access to the relative media became much more simple and universal, and certain social sensibilities regarding some of the more risqué subject matter contained within anime and manga progressed to a more enlightened point of view. I highly recommend looking into it honestly.
@jaketheripper73854 жыл бұрын
@@puppymolly123 Oh don't worry, I was sure to watch the uncut and unedited versions for both the subbed and dubbed incarnations. Personally I prefer the regular English dub version of "The Vision of Escaflowne", but that's just me. I tell you what though, the plot REALLY starts to go off the fuckin' rails there towards the end... What with Dilandau being Alan's long lost sister and having undergone a forced gender reassignment procedure involving not just medical techniques, but various mystical aspects and manipulation of quantum physics and shit as well. Then there was the whole deal with Dornkirk manipulating events via his "Destiny Prognostication Engine" or whatever, and it was never really made clear if all of that was based in science, mysticism/sorcery, or both. Frankly, that whole aspect was made out to be pretty archaic and ultimately just came across as overly convoluted, which looking back really might have been the point all along lol. Honestly I didn't really care for the inclusion of that whole plot element, as it made everything seem pre-ordained and orchestrated and thus ultimately pointless and without meaning. I mean I get that this is part of the whole philosophical concept that is meant to be evoked here, but it seems EXTREMELY out of place in a fantasy/mecha/Isekai anime that is primarily aimed at a younger teenage demographic. Just my opinion really, for whatever it may be worth... I went back and watched the "Fox Kids Cut" of the first ten episodes here recently, just to see how much I remembered and how different it was from the original intended story. Let me just say too that finding that specific cut for those episodes was an impressive feat on its own... In any case, the entire feel of the plot was remarkably different and honestly failed to make much sense in a lot of areas. It seems in the effort to reduce the significance/presence of Hitomi in the plot, many key story and world building elements were also carved out or omitted resulting in a fairly bland and at times confusing/conflicting premise altogether. Man, they sure did not like her at all! Lol. They definitely just skipped over or excised a bunch of pretty crucial storytelling and character development points to lend focus essentially entirely to that sweet, sweet "badass mecha action!" haha. With a far more developed mind and discerning intellect on my side, coupled with a bit of experiential wisdom and the benefits of hindsight; I can certainly understand completely how my 10 to 11 year-old brain thought that this new anime series on Fox Kids was the greatest thing since DragonBall. The fact that it was so very 'different' in it's concept and animated using traditional hand-drawn techniques is why it stuck with me all these years and remains one of my all time favorite titles for not just its story and characters, but for the visual aspects as well. It's definitely one of the most visually stunning pieces of anime even by today's standards, and considering the fact that the entire series was produced on what some may refer to as a 'shoestring budget,' even within a frame of reference of the period it was made serves to only further endear the series to me beyond a point that would in many cases otherwise be attributed to the "rose-colored" filter created by nostalgia and the degree of faux fondness it may induce. As such, I can say without a doubt that the series in its TRUE form has all the capability to stand on its own. Truly a remarkable and memorable work ❤.

I remember watching this on FoxKids!! 😳 They must've got a ton of complaints from parents because they only aired up to episode 14 in my area. I remember watching it and noticing that they didn't do a very good job editing out all of the blood. 💀👀 'Wow, are we really going to be able to watch this entire show although it's obviously quite bloody during FoxKids???' ...Guess not. 😂😂😂

That was friggin' over 10 years ago! I was in the midst of my 16th year... and shows' intro like this were a weakness to me all the time especially in the non-surpassing dark days of winter - trying to focus on my studies (because I really had grades to churn out) but spending valuable hours to things like this...

I actually l prefer this to the Japanese opening. The Japanese opening is a good song, but it sounds like every other slow melodic anime opening. The Fox Kids opening sounds exciting and dramatic.

That is absolutely putrid. I am pretty sure I either watched fansubs back in the day, or the official release like right when it came out. So when I heard that they were doing this... ugh.

This is better than that Japanese version, a lot more dramatic and powerful. I also love dragonball z’s rock the dragon, way better than the Japanese original.
