Escanor’s deal is that the closer the sun is to its peak at Noon, the more his power climbs. He’s like a reverse vampire, being strongest during the day instead of night. However his power steadily declines after 12:01pm, and once the sun has set he turns back to his weaker form, until the sun rises again in the morning. Being the “Lion’s Sin of Pride”, many aspects of his design are meant to portray a lion, especially within the last few fights of the final season, where the fire around his head resembles a lion’s mane. There’s also the concept of Pride in the story of Icarus, the Angel with wax wings, whose arrogance causes him to fly too close to the sun which cause his wings to melt. So while Escanor isn’t quite as prideful near the end of the narrative, he still held enough pride in protecting his comrades/the other sins, and that lead to his death, his biggest sacrifice.

There’s 1 more part to Escanor’s story that never made it to the screen, and I guess it could be considered “Exhibit D.” SPOILERS FOR CONTENT THAT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN TOUCHED ON UNTIL SEASONS 3 & 4. In Season 4 of 7DS, we learn about Gelda, a vampire that is a demon’s girlfriend. She’s one of the last remaining vampires; why is that you might ask? It’s because, in a brief arc in the manga (which chronologically takes place when the sins were first being brought together on one of their first missions), they had to eliminate the Vampire Clan who was beginning an uprising. This was one of Escanor’s first chances to shine, figuratively and literally, so much so that Merlin and Meliodas would have to encourage him to go to the battle, while Meliodas tried to carry the former’s Divine Axe to the battlefield (they were heading to the Vampire Castle during a time of day when Escanor wasn’t strong enough yet to carry his own weapon). In short, much like how vampires in most lore die in sunlight, Escanor INCINERATES most of the Vampire Clan, with the exception of Gelda, who’d been sealed away by this point, to keep her from meeting the same fate. Think about that; Escanor (albeit in his prime) essentially brought an entire race to extinction. He was a force to be reckoned with.
