I have an 2016 Edge Titanium and WOW this vehicle is amazing. I bought it used and was not sure how good it would be. Well, I am pleasantly surprised! It’s been very reliable and has plenty of power to get me down the road quick. The ride is quiet and well planted. It takes turns really well and does not wallow or lean. Way to go Ford!!

I bet Ford has been really reluctant to redesign this vehicle because it’s been one of their best cash cows. It has conservative styling and does an adequate job of just about everything. LOTS of people enjoy vehicles like that. I must not be the only one who thinks so, because the roads are full of these things.

We've had a 2013 Edge for almost 9 years now. It's been a comfortable and dependable vehicle. We got a Palisade last year as our family is outgrowing the Edge for longer trips, but we're finding the Edge is still getting driven plenty around town. I thought Ford was discontinuing it, glad to hear they're bringing it back for another generation.

haha same! I worked at Enterprise when this generation came out. It was miles better than the first gen but it’s grown extremely stagnant. There’s a new Edge L (I think it’s called) in China and it looks quite nice. But I’ve heard they’re discontinuing the model altogether in our market.

We have owned two Edges, a 2007 and now a 2019. The Edge has not been redesigned since 2015 accounting for some of the "aging" changes Alex mentions. However, it still is a fun car to drive and has attributes Alex mentions, wider more roomy cabin, good storage area, comfortable seats and ride, precise steering, great in snowy situations with the AWD, excellent head room and rear leg and head room. I don't think the U.S. is going to get the new Edge version that is being shown in China. The Edge factory in Ontario, Canada is being converted to a new EV. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, says that he thinks the Escape and Edge are "commodity" cars and that Ford will only go with bigger vehicles. It is disappointing that Ford is ceding yet another area of the auto market to other manufacturers. What a mistake. If I had to make suggestions to Ford for the Edge I would suggest they improve the interior material quality ( a perennial complaint that every car magazine review says about Ford products. You would think that Ford would read the same reviews and make appropriate changes), raise the rear hatch (as Alex mentions), get rid of the foot rest next to the brake pedal (it just gets in the way) and update the interior overall looks. Consumer Reports recommends the Edge, one of the few products getting their endorsement. The only reliability problem we have had after 4 years and 40,000 miles is a failed AC compressor. The car was out of the 36,000 mile, 3 year warranty but to Fords credit they helped us out and we only had to pay $200. They also then added on an extended warranty plan without charge. In a time when I wonder about manufacturers and how they treat customers I was impressed with Ford's Customer Relations department. Good for them.

I like the foot rest in my Ford truck. There's nothing else I need to do with my left foot and it's out of the way. Maybe in the Edge it is closer though as your footwell is smaller.

I am sure Ford will have a edge replacement in store. It will be either made in China or Mexico. They won't get rid of the escape and the edge. They sell to well to do so. But yes Ford thinks they can rid of the edge and maybe the escape and just have explorers and broncos. Very silly move. Pretty soon they will only be making Explorers and F-150s. I have news for Ford. All their cars are commodity cars. They're not a luxury brand. They make commodity cars for people who need affordable cars.

The Edge was the best damn company car I ever had. Still shocked that my company opted to get these instead of what our competitors were giving their employees: Altima, Malibus, Escapes. However due to inflation and rumors that the Edge is being discontinued, our fleet is going back to Escapes :(

I've got a 2014 edge with the sport appearance pkg and I love it! I will admit that after 2014 the edges lost their edge because the design lost something and resembled other vehicles in my opinion. Still looks good, just lost it's identity a little from the 2011-2014 design!

Funny enough I had a loaner Ford Edge Titanium from my Toyota dealership today (rental company also was Hertz) while getting my 2019 Rav4 hybrids serviced. On the pro side I loved the pano sunroof and strong acceleration when asked. On the con side driver legroom was shockingly poor (I'm 6 feet tall, short torso, longer legs). Less leg room then my Rav4 (which Toyota's are notorious for less legroom). Also noticed lots of cheap plastic inside and very large tablet style infotainment with lack of physical buttons was a huge distraction (safety risk).

Thanks Alex! I drove an Edge a few weeks ago while in AZ as well. I thought it was comfortable but the engine did seem to struggle at times - don’t know the year or engine size but it did have wireless Apple CarPlay which I really liked. I was just getting ready to get a Subaru Outback Touring XT but then learned that they removed the acoustic glass!! Subaru seems to keep finding ways to prevent me from buying their vehicles in recent years (have owned 2 in the past). Anyway, the search continues…

I wouldn't hold my breath on anything amazing from Ford for a 2024 Edge. Oakville is shutting down and retooling for 2025 EV other than Edge. Dealers I have spoken to are 50 50 on whether they will actually see 2024s. IMHO Edge was always underrated. Sweet spot size and value with decent ride and drivetrain.

I had a Ford Edge 2019 SEL AWD build in Canada, the AWD failed on me at just 5,470 miles and 1 year 5 months of owning the car. The differential had to be replaced (under warranty) and it was in the dealership for a month. Again the AWD failed with a message in the dash "AWD Malfunction Service Required" exactly after 1 year and 10 months at 12,825 miles. The differential had to be replaced again (under the extended warranty that I purchased) so I ended up selling it, because couldn't afford to spend over $1K every two years that it decides to break.

As an Escape owner the Edge is an all around good car. Its more spacious where it counts, pretty decently powerful, and great fuel economy. These can be had as absolute bargains used, and SEL and Titanium are both pretty feature laden. I like the styling, and you can get things like cooled seats not available in Escapes. I could easily drive one of these all day and be comfortable, it will be sad to see this gen go.

Ford has a compelling set of new vehicles they have launched overseas. I'm not sure why they refuse to bring products like the Territory, Puma, Evos, and others to the states. It really boggles my mind that Ford has not been more open about future products because I couldn't recommend anything other than their trucks and the Bronco to anyone. I did look at the Edge when I started shopping (ended up with a 2020 Ford Escape with $8k discount). I wonder if the Ford Everest--redesigned along with the new Ranger, which is coming to the US--would work as a re-badged Edge? You can do an Everest with a 2-row instead of a 3-row, and it does sit on the same Ford Ranger chassis.

I've rented many Ford Edges over the past 10 years for business and personal use - probably racked up over 3k miles in them. They've steadily improved a good amount over the years, but, they still have some showstopper issues with them that I'm surprised Alex didn't mention. The "A" pillar is way too big (helluva blind spot), you sit sorta off center in the driver's seat, and I never liked how the height of the front edge of the driver's seat remains stationary (can't be lowered) while the rest of the seat can be adjusted all over the place. It was on the short list when my family bought a vehicle back in '21, but our '22 Outback XT won out. We're very happy with our choice.

Thanks for this review Alex - I've always had my eye on the Edge, but I've always known (probably from one of your older reviews!) about the reduced torque in lower gears (to prevent shredding the transmission) and hence only average performance. I thought cooler temperatures = denser air = more air into the intake manifold = better performance? I'm not sure I understand why the cooler temperatures lead to worse fuel economy? Can you explain?
@CrazyWeeMonkey
@CrazyWeeMonkey Жыл бұрын
Colder air is more dense, meaning there'll be a greater amount of aerodynamic drag. Though at the same time, cold dense air will allow for better performance from a forced induction engine.

Completely out of date vehicles that should have been redesigned 5 years ago that they didn’t bother because they were flying off the lots regardless.

Imo, this is the class of car that EVs perfectly replace. Comparing gas-powered midsized crossovers to EV midsized crossovers and you get the same range, performance, and capability for similar prices. As EVs move up or down the size categories they become way more expensive comparatively and a lot less practical (ie: less towing on big trucks/suvs and less range on small cars). I suspect Nissan thought the same way which is why we get the Aryia instead of a new Murano, and with the Maxima getting discontinued I bet the Murano is close behind since they're platform brothers. That might be an edge for the Edge if buyers are looking for a gas-powered midsized crossover this might end up being one of the last options.

We've had an Edge since 2013 and a Sorento since 2019. They are both good vehicles; but the Ford sure does rattle a lot more than the Kia. You also have a more car like interior in the Kia than the Ford, which for its size is actually pretty cramped on the inside. The US isn't apparently getting the new model available in China as the 2024 US Model is identical to the 2023 model, which was identical to the 2022 model.

Has Ford lost its Edge? In this model year one could argue yes. Hopefully the refresh will bring a RWD based AWD plug in Hybrid with a heat pump and 34 miles of EV range that’s geared towards fuel economy. Refresh the cabin and revamp the instrument and infotainment gear and they will complete very well especially if they add premium materials in an upper trim.

that screen looks way too aftermarket for me.

Agreed. They should have stuck with the previous screen. It seems that the larger the screen, the slower the performance of the infotainment system. Otherwise Ford has/has (?) one of the best infotainment systems.

I own a 2017 Murano and I can tell you it’s plenty fun to drive. Even exciting. Excellent reliability, stylish and comfortable. Gears do not make cars better, EVs are a great example of that.

The Edge seems a bit pricy. For $58K one can even get a German option like the BMW X3 with a decent amount of options and a lot more fun to drive (and less plastic-y).

I rented a 2022 Ford Edge (basically a clone of this) for about a week... man, I can tell you I was thoroughly UNIMPRESSED. It felt sluggish compared to other vehicles I've driven recently... it handled about like a whale, the interior just screamed "Outdated", and man... does the interior feel cheep and plasticy. The infotainment screen was a real distraction... 99.9% of the competition uses a black back-lit screen, while this uses a WHITE back-lit screen... who does that? Try using this at night, even when "dimmed" it's a huge distraction. On the plus side, it is "functional" as a good sized family hauler. There is plenty of room inside for front, rear and cargo capacity... but man... it's just feels so cheap and outdated on the inside. IMHO this is also overpriced for what you get... look at a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe... He's like "its' cheaper but you don't get as much"... okay, well if you start loading up the Santa Fe to the same price-point of an Edge, it comes with MORE features and a lot more quality, up-to-date interior with a lot more tech. As a rental I was basically "take this or nothing", it worked for a few days, but there's no way on this Earth I'd fork over my own money for this monstrosity. If I was in the market for an SUV of this size and price, i'd take the Santa Fe, nicely loaded in a heartbeat! A Santa Fe Calligraphy starts at 42K... there's no way a 42K Edge can compete with it.

I've always despised the instrument cluster in Ford Edges. And I see they have not changed. A 4 year old could come up with a better design in 5 minutes. Give me a friggin break. It has not changed in 15 years. Ford is phoning that in. And the price is ridiculous. The rest of it is just decent and the one bright spot is the 12 inch touch screen. Nothing else has changed. Try harder Ford.

Can it tow? Not really. I want to like the Edge, but it's more money for something that just doesn't offer much more than an Escape.

Except for a lot more interior space. That space may or may not be of interest to you, but it will be to a lot of potential buyers.
