I love how persistently and stubbornly kind Ashivon is portrayed to be in this series. He went into that cell to comfort Carnius. Carnius, his handler from the Church, his primary abuser, the one who forced him to kill countless people by taking control of his body like a puppet-master. Carnius, the man who hunted him down when he was just getting used to freedom and violated him AGAIN by forcing him to attack his lover and injuring her. He should hate Carnius. If he were anyone else but himself, he would have let him rot in that cell. But he is Ashivon and one of Ashivon’s biggest strengths is his ability to forgive and show empathy to others, even those who don’t deserve it. Even at the end, when Carnius was dragging him back to the hell that is Divinity, he doesn’t seem angry. Just shocked and sad. Sad that Carnius refused to change and become better, despite experiencing firsthand through Ashivon how horrible Divinity is and the suffering it inflicts on those it considers non-believers. Sad, because he’s leaving his new home, his lover, and his best friend alone.

YEAH!! good catch, i missed it before i read this comment. i also think that his disgust could come from the phenomenon of people seeing those they deem "lesser" as deviant when attracted to, so being in a mind that loves sanga and Ahnmivah (a demon-lover and demon respectively, in carnius's opinion) might cause him ot just instinctively feel revulsion because he still views them as inhuman. along with feeling overwhelmbed because he's basically in a new world -- the things he viewed as animals or evil spirits have love and pain just as complex as his -- where does he even go from here?

At first I was feeling such empathy for Carnius and I still DO because this is what he was raised into. Despite my frustration with his choice, I wholly understand that it's literally all he knows, and you can't just change your entire world view like flipping a switch. He's struggling with his own identity because he's seen Ashivon's pain, he's FELT it. And in the end they're not all that different. But I'm not surprised that he still clings to his views because is there anything more terrifying than losing everything that you are? Poor Ashivon tho HE'S STILL SO GODDAMN KIND and of course it gets him hurt. Still, I pray that he never loses that trusting, kind heart of his. His girlfriend is the one who kicks ass and doesn't apologise to those who deserve said beating so hey, they balance each other out. Especially after being forced to experience Ash's side of everything in the last video, yeah. Like the flashes of Ashivon's memories are here because Carnius is not just in a very similar place to where Ash was before, locked up with no way out, but because Ashivon pushed his own menories into Carnius's head - those moments are moments when Carnius himself is seeing those memories, linked to his own current experience. Yet still, the programming runs too deep. When Carnius's own face starts disappearing, that's because he's starting to question everything he's been taught, and it causes him to lose his grip on his own current identity. Ironically, if Ash hadn't given him an opportunity to flee, the process may have continued. They should've just cut through his Divinity tattoo...

I'm really loving all the little revelations from this. I was expecting a focus on Carnius but this I never could have guessed. I love the way you use faces in this it's truly amazing. Shall rewatch and analyse more in depth later once I've stopped gushing but guessing the facelessness is a sign of victimhood and or dehumanising as a way to justify evil or push away the guilt. You know what I think was a good parallel that I’m not entirely sure was his real memory or if it was his face on top of where Ash’s should go? The part where he was being punished on the ground, being beaten with those light sticks, and then the (I think) higher priest coming to heal him while he was still on the ground. It reminded me a lot to that one scene where Sangna did that for Ash on (I’m pretty sure) the first video of this series. Like, the shots were pretty similar, as was the “choreography”. I really liked that! It made me think “Did this happen or is he blending some memories here?”

If I did not show promise and obedience I would not have been saved' which, in that cage, no doubt turns to a desperate twisting terror that if he doesnt bring the demon back, he'll probably be brought back in chains and killed with them! His draw towards power and skill made him a fine candidate to be groomed, but fear rules all. He knows how utterly replaceable he his. Even if he does escape, theyll just -(summon another)- raise another. There is NO happy ending in his mind. this is as close as he can get.

Oh my god Oh my GOD do I adore this. Diving into Carnius' perspective without redeeming him, just bringing depth, understanding of his character was such a good narrative choice. Nothing will give me any chills as him dragging Ashivon back into the hell of Divinity that he thought he'd escaped for good- its almost reminiscent of a child having to go back to their abusive household, older, stronger, but no less susceptible to the demons that reside there and it fills me with nothing but dread but also curiosity as to how he will handle it

This is gonna make me sick (/SUPER POSITIVE). Had to drop everything I was doing in the first few seconds of the animation and halfway through I was already full-on sobbing; the way you can evoke emotions through composition and narration is awe-inspiring, with beautiful fast paced sequences for a crescendo, tragically interwoven to tell a story of manipulation and cruelty. The fragmented memories and shared emotions shatter Carnius's view as he begins to see his victims for what they really are: people. As their faces plague his mind he tries to grasp at what is familiar, the power, the control, and with hasty decisions comes the drammatic cliffhanger. This is by far my favourite work in the series, as it had me positively shaking. Can't wait to see how the story proceeds!! (I'll be wallowing in contemplative misery in the meanwhile) ❤

A masterpiece as always. You can see why this madness exists and how children can easily be dragged into it... It's kind of a common thing with our history I think, erasing faces to justify atrocities against a group of people. That's what makes it feel so real.

Ohhh im sooo obsessed over all of this. I check every so often every year to see if there's any new updates and the one time I check tumblr's got my back to remind me!!! The symbolism of losing their faces because they are no longer seen as human, the way as a child they're influenced to keep on that violence through social pressure and seeing older folk doing it first. Ouhh. This is perfect. But that cliffhanger is going to HAUNT ME

Damn, so much worldbuilding and storytelling without a single word. The cliffhanger hurts, but it makes sense that a moment of empathy wouldn't immediately undo an entire worldview, but maybe crack it a little. Can't wait for the next one!

BLESSINGS UPON US ALL THIS DAY!!! ToastyGlow has uploaded the next installment of Escape from Divinity, and it is gooooooood!!! When I opened my subscription list thismorning and saw this I got all giddy and knotted in my tummy, such an unexpected treat for breakfast!! GREAT WORK, BEAUTIFULLY DONE!!! I will watch this a million more times, and then have to add this song, which I was previously unfamiliar with, to my playlist. With the songs from DAYS and HEAVEN, I intially didn't go much on them, and then after watching your videos over and over, I fell in love with them, and now anytime any of the songs from the series popup in my playlist, I immediately get a little passing thought on this series, or images from it and wonder and hope and wish for the next insallment! I am so interested and invested in the story!
