The Animal Mad Max 2: Hidden Symbolism in The Road Warrior

Fun fact: Max's family name (Rockatansky) is derived from the name of a dissection technique (Rokitansky). George Miller used to work in the emergency room of a hospital where he often treated victims of road accidents, a fact that inspired Mad Max. I find it interesting that the first movie in the franchise is often referred to as a post apocalyptic movie. It's actually pre apocalyptic. In the first movie society is on the brink of collapse, but there's still a semblance of law and order (there's still a police force). In the second movie civilisation has collapsed (apparently after a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union, the "tribes" that are referred to in the prologue) and it's every man for himself, so the second movie is really post apocalyptic.

Astute observations on my favorite action film (for men only). There are almost no elements of the wants of non-male viewers. It covers some of the basic hero questions boys grow up with: What would you do when.. How would you see a way through? Max is desperate, but not a coward. He cares, but he calculates. He's brave, but doesn't let his compassion get in the way of his cold understanding of strategies and his part within them. "A desperate shell of a man" is yet still a man. A story of a man who is beaten, yet not broken. Great job on this analysis of Mad Max 2!

I have a blue heeler- he is very social, but if he gets a bad vibe...I've seen it 4 times and he wasn't wrong. Heelers, if the love you, stay very loyal and won't leave you. Funny thing? My dog will watch my feet working the pedals in my truck or car when we are driving

Nice video and good thesis. Here is something to consider with what you meant with animal symbolism. Chickens historically in many cultures is the perfect symbol of life. A healthy chicken produces and egg a day, every day. The egg can be fertilized beforehand and produce another chicken or it can be unfertilized and be eaten and sustain another life for a day. Eggs are eaten in the morning as breakfast, or early in the life cycle. When it stops producing eggs it becomes food for a final time. A dinner normally eaten at the end of a day or end of life. The gyro captain is holding a rooster upside down. It wasn't dead like you were thinking. The girl is holding a hen. One male and one female. It's the gyro captains plan at a better life. He only needs to steal the two chickens and one fertile female. Wez has feathers and plumage on his armor because he is a bird of prey, a raptor, a hawk. So strong only one person can control and tame it. The great humongous who has to chain his animal up, has to put to sleep to calm it down. It's the same man/dog pet relationship that Max and Dog have that you describe. The great humongous' men describes his men as dogs not men. It's the death of a fast fertile animal, the rabbit, that is killed to show they can't hide under the ground and reproduce like rabbits and escape what is coming. And consider this alternative. The death of dog is not the death of Max's animal side and his return to humanity. It's the exact opposite. The dog was his last bit of humanity. The dog was the last part of his life as Max the man, Max the husband, Max the father. The dog is the last part of his family he was holding on to keeping him human. When the dog dies the real mad dog is now free and has no leash. Its why Max drives the tanker dirt, death and destruction and not the school bus of life and knowledge. When it's over all dogs are dead but one. Max. a common dogs name.

Fantastic video, Rosetta! Mad Max 2 has always been my favorite in the franchise-I grew up watching this one out of my dad's vhs collection when I was a kid all the time, more often than any of the other ones. Fury Road is pretty kick ass too, but Road Warrior will always have a special place in my heart.

No matter how many times I watch Road Warrior. Must be in the hundreds now. Every time Dog is killed I breakdown in tears. There is so much emotion going on in that scene.
