Nice. Thanks. I was doing the calculation based on normal acceleration of an object ("circling") is the square of its velocity divided by the local radius of curvature. Set this equal to g for the Earth and you become weightless. This gives an answer that is off by the square root of two (7910 m/s) for the escape velocity. Interestingly, using energy (as you did, which should be more universal), you get [basically] the same formula with two in the numerator under the radical sign, which accounts for the error. I like your presentation board. Great job.

@@100poky I'll concur with you on that one. "if you cannot explain a concept simply, you do not understand it enough".. I don't know where this is quoted from, many say Einstein but I kind of doubt it, regardless, it's the case. It's easy to realize there is an iceberg of understanding within the narrator given the ease of his explanation of this topic. Okay, let's solve this step-by-step: 1) (6.67 x 10^-11) x (5.972 x 10^24) = 3.9842 x 10^14 2) 3.9842 x 10^14 / (6.38 x 10^6) = 6.2400 x 10^7 Therefore, the final result is: 6.2400 x 10^7

Ehm, regarding the use of r, when I am given the distance the rocket has moved...when I am doing the calculations, will I only consider the radius of the earth alone or add both distances to represent that r value. Kindly clarify.

Does anyone know why we can set the final kinetic energy as zero. I still dont understand
@balijosu
@balijosu 4 ай бұрын
If it were positive, the object would escape with energy to spare. If it were negative, the object would be pulled back. At zero, it's the minimum energy needed not to be pulled back.

Positive and negative are pretty much arbitrary. It doesn't matter - as long as you are consistent. If up is positive, down is negative - - and vice versa. If you make up negative and down positive, you will arrive at that same answer.

The formula of energy is just a trade off, you start with a speed and the earth gravity will slow you down all the time since the start. You'll slow down all the way until you reach your maximum altitude in which your speed will be zero and then you'll start to fall, now your speed will start increasing all the time until you go back to the point to where you started, where your speed will be the maximum (and exactly the same at which you started). So the formula just balances both effects, speed and "potencial" (which means, capacity to increase speed, in other words. If you are fast means that you won't go too much faster. If you are slow, means you are very high (because earth slowed you down a lot, that means you have climbed a lot, so there's a huge fall ahead, so you will increase your speed ..--> high potencial ). They key is that the faster is the inicial speed, the higher you'll get, and the higher you'll get, THE LESS gravitational force you'll experience (it decreases by the square of the distance, that means, its force to you go down exponentially, so, we start at 1g of force, at 1 radius away is (let say) 0.5g, at 2 radius is 0.1g, at 3 radius is 0.01g and at 4 radius is 0.01g, 5 radius -> 0.001g etc. At the distance of the moon (31r) = 0.000000000001g. So, if we reach 1 radius of altitude, it will take some time to get back, let say 1 hour. If we reach 2r, it will take much more (because of the low gs) , let say 1 day. 3r -> 2 weeks. .. the moon -> 3mm years. So, the faster is your starting velocity, the farther you'll go and the longer will it take for you to come back. If then we tell the formula, I want the final point to be infinite far -> 0 gravitational force -> infinite time to come back. So that will work. And when the distance is infinite-> the formula of potencial energy goes to zero (because of being divided by the distance), and you also force that you also want that when it reaches that distances, that will be the ultimate point, or the point in which the object start going back-> speed of it = zero.
