Outrunning a dangerous "derecho" caught on camera in York Nebraska on June 3, 2014. A derecho (from Spanish "straight") is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a land-based, fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms. Derechos can produce widespread hurricane force winds and are sometimes accompanied by tornadoes, large destructive hail and heavy rainfall.
To license footage contact hankschyma@yahoo.com
Meteorological Discussion:
Severe thunderstorms with strong downward wind bursts over a sustained period of time cut through the Midwest on June 3, 2014.
The extent, length and severity of straight-line (nontornadic) wind reports indicate a "derecho." Straight-line wind gusts exceeding 74 mph were reported in Nebraska in areas including Rock, Washington, Valley, Garden and Gage Counties. Such gusts were also reported in Iowa and some wind gusts were reported to exceed 90 mph. Hail exceeding two inches in diameter was reported in Custer, Antelope, Madison, Stanton, Dodge, Washington, Blaine, Platte, Scott’s Bluff, Morrill, Saunders and Saline Counties in Nebraska. In nearby Iowa, two inch or larger hail was reported in Decatur, Taylor, Ringgold and Page Counties according to SPC reports. Isolated hail reports exceeding four inches were found in Washington, Scott’s Bluff and Morrill Counties in Nebraska.
Tornadoes of unconfirmed intensity were reported in Rock, Valley, Greeley, Thomas, Howard and Custer Counties in Nebraska. Tornadoes were also reported in Pottawattamie County in Iowa according to the SPC.
Impacts:
Reports of downed trees and power lines are widespread, together with light to moderate structural damage as a result of straight-line wind gusts. One truck was reported flipped in Greeley County, Nebraska. A two foot diameter live Maple was reported downed during the storm. There are widespread reports of damage due to downed trees. Hail caused light to moderate structural damage with considerable crop and auto damage according to SPC reports. In Council Bluffs, Iowa, at least 25 vehicles with hail damage were reported along I-29. At least a dozen injuries were reported as a result of hail.
Omaha, Nebraska was subject to flooding due to excessive rainfall, according to reports. Police had to use boats to rescue stranded motorists in the area. The National Weather Service indicated that the heaviest damage was located near the Nebraska-Kansas border in Nemaha County, where at least one home was destroyed and others were damaged.

Derechos are terrifying. I was caught in the June 2012 one that crossed the Appalachian mountains and that is the scariest storm I’ve ever been in in my life. To make matters worse, I was in a trailer on the side of the mountain so I was much closer to the clouds. Honestly thought the wind was going to pick up the trailer.

Man, we had a derecho in south NJ a couple years ago. It struck in the middle of the night with no warnings of storms in the forecast at all. Knocked out power to the entire region for up to a week depending on where you live. Constant lightning, huge balls of hail, unbelievably powerful winds which knocked over trees comparable to how Hurricane Sandy did. It was very scary yet surreal and amazing. One of the few unusual weather phenomena we've ever had here. Thanks for sharing this Hank.

Hank, I just watched your El Reno Tornado video for the 20th time and had a couple questions to ask. 1. Did you realize you were watching a "not so normal" tornadic event? 2. Is that the closest you have been to being hit by a tornado due to people being in the way? 3. This is more of a compliment, your video's and insight, basically your style is the best in my opinion! Thank you for doing what you do.

Hey hidog! When watching the El Reno tornado I saw what was happening but questioned my perception. When the tornado maxed out and was dropping the giant suction vortices I remember thinking "What the hell am I looking at." People generally don't put me in the way of danger, they prevent me from getting to it. A couple exceptions were my own fault. Always appreciate it dude!

I remember when this reached western VA. it hit where I live worse than the surrounding areas and it was the scariest thing I've ever experienced. I was outside in a crowd at a small function downtown when the shelf cloud rolled through and it was ridiculously tall and ominous. Once the winds finally started, people scattered everywhere and rocks and debris flew all over. Trees and limbs were down all throughout the county and some people's power was out widespread for over a week, up to two during some of the hottest weather that summer. It was pretty miserable altogether.

I lived through the Great Lakes Derecho of 1998. That thing was a fucking monster. I remember waking up maybe 5-10 minutes before the storm actually hit, and the world felt wrong. I can't describe more exactly than that. Now, I know I was probably experiencing the effects of infrasound running ahead of the storm. My mom and I went downstairs, the sirens started going, and then the wind just went absolutely insane. Probably 100-120 mph gusts. We sprinted to the basement, and prayed to God we'd survive the night. I have never been as terrified as i was in that moment.

These Derecho's horrify me to an extent tornadoes cannot even begin to reach. With tornadoes you can trust that there is a single source of the intense winds, with Derecho's everywhere is the source. Not being able to point a finger at a single thing causing the damage is something that rivals the uncanny.

Awww Hank, you would have been fine sitting through the derecho. Once you get through the monstrous wind at the front part of the storm it's all easy after that. We had the June 29, 2012 derecho go through here in central Ohio. The temperature just before the derecho blew through was almost 100°F outside and the gust front looked like a big black wall and the wind, measured at 81 mph, felt like it was coming out of a blast furnace. By the time all was said and done the temperature had dropped 25°F.

You’re brave. If I saw that monstrosity heading towards me I’d become a storm runner and head in the opposite direction.

Derechos can be about as bad as tornadoes. I'll never forget the July 2003 one in Memphis, nicknamed Hurricane Elvis. The entire city was impacted with 300,000 w/o power (Yeah, July in Memphis) and 7 dead. Thousands of huge oak trees were uprooted. Straight line winds of 100+ mph. A nightmare. My power was out for 5 days and I had just received that morning my new, state of the art home theater system that I couldn't use for a week! No fair! My neighbors just behind me were on another power grid and never lost power!

SPC declared a High Risk that day for straight-line winds. 60% hatched, while the tornado risk was only 10% hatched for anything that fired up independent of the line. Nasty thing to be caught in.

i know im here late but we had one in VA a few years back and it was so surreal. I was outside because i thought it was just a regular tstorm that we get all the time so no biggie. i did notice the clouds were a sickly green but i thought it just meant we were getting a big storm. But as soon as that wall of cold wind hit me... oh my. a split second later came the horizontal rain and it was so dark out like the sun just said nope and left. i had to tape my windows because the torrential rain was pouring off the windowsill. the aftermath was immense; trees down, power outages all over, cars under trees, roofs ripped off. some of my neighbors across the street were dark for two weeks so we took their perishables and they ate with us many nights. but the thing that stuck with me the most was after the storm people ventured out to check their cars and it was so quiet and eerie.. and with everyone moving slow to not fall over debris it looked like a zombie apocalypse.

I remember the recent one in 2021. I was at work in the Quad Cities. Everyone was watching the windows as this massive storm wall of nothing but inky blackness covered the sky like some kinda horror movie. We work in a brick building and I can assure you, the damn thing was shuddering with house powerful those winds were, and it only got worse when the power went out.

I was at a friend's house. My mom was on her way to pick me up for a dentist's appointment when it hit. That's how my mom met my friend and his family

I was really close to it I think. idk which day but either it was that day where it started out as a bright sunny day then clouds came and covered the entire sky. I was in camp that time btw. After the outside camp I had, we went back inside the normal camp. A tornado warning was produced at about 6 PM, and we were in the school's basement. Then my dad picked me up, and the sirens started, followed by heavy rainfall and a severe thunderstorm. Or it could be the day where the storm happened at night, but probably it wasn't that one. On that day, the storm wiped out the power and the street lights at the camp, so we had to go to another camp.

Incredible views way off into the distance you get out there. Here in the East you can never see that far off into the distance unless you're up on a tall hill.
