Friction saw is actually the best way to escape from zip ties of any size. If you don't believe me try it. In fact if you want to cut PVC pipe, get yourself a piece of twine and friction saw it. Friction saws should also be in every back packer's go-to kit. Super efficient.

Dude, that was completely badass. When I was in boyscouts I melted through something like a 1" synthetic rope or thicker with a very thin strand of nylon string for guy-lines on a tarp or some such, so I've seen this work very quickly in action, but I never thought about 550 paracord for shoelaces and using that to get out of zip-cuffs! It took you 10 times as long to set it up as to saw out of the cuffs. Now I need to go find the other video on the "Break Method" :P

@Twistedcain1 I'm going to say probably not. 550 cord is made of of several different strands within the actual line, and is rated at 550lbs, hence 550 cord. Guys have been using it in country for years to make quick and sturdy repairs and that, as with alot of things, has transferred over to the civilian side. I don't think standard laces would have the strength to do it, but I could be wrong...would be an interesting test to try though.

I tried this and found it much easier and quicker to simply tie two overhand knots to secure it to your feet. The overhand knots won't come loose and they are quicker and easier to tie and just as quick to free up when you've finished.

If you watch the video on shimming that you also commented on, you'll see the package for the zip ties as well as hear that they were the heaviest duty ties we could find at Lowes and Home Depot. They carry a 175lb. rating and were breaking easily. The friction saw completely melts them through and can melt any kind of plastic fairly easy no matter how thick it is. Thanks for the comment!

Is this just with the normal paracord? I was thinking that was it was a bit too thick, do you need to gut it and use the inner parts?

instead of tying them onto your shoe, ive found it easier to thread it through the top hole in the shoe. tie a knot to keep it in, thread it through the zip tie and thread and tie it into the other shoes top hole. just a thought

I think a quicker way would be to undo some of the lace on both boots - about half. then tie two together through the cuffs, and just use one half of the lace so you don't hit the knot. It would take a bit longer to cut through, but overall time should be less, plus you have less laces to tie back up after. This is just a theory of mine - maybe it could be tested...

Sky HansenAmvGames Good luck with That one. You'll be lucky if your captors are not in the room.Your captors are not gonna waste any further time with you even if you're a hostage... if they don't getwhat they want they will kill you anyway, with or without an agenda. If they're smart they will put someone to watch you round the clock to make sure you don't try to escape. Go ahead, try this escape method anyway, and pray that your captors are stupid enough to leave you alone in a locked room or container. When youleast expect it, they will make an example of you and kill you right there and then just for the fun of it. Even military enemy combat groups and terrorists know this. Speaking of which, they're watching this video and now they know how to prevent you from escaping, even if they have to strip you naked so you'll have nothing to help you escape.

Hinged cuffs are practically impossible to open behind your back even if you have a cuff key because you don't have the same freedom of motion as chained cuffs. Often if I'm cuffing somebody, instead of cuffing their wrists both pointing down and hands by their coccyx, I run their wrists parallel to each other across the small of the back. I could hand you a cuff key, and you still won't get out. Keeps them from being broken as well (for those big guys).

very nice vid. same method/principle applies, but it is far more impressive when you friction saw through some zip cuffs. in a legit martial law scenerio, chances are you are going to be restrained with zup cuffs. the good ol' friction saw method works just as well on zip cuffs, just takes a bit more time and effort. you cant torque your way out of zip cuffs though, at least i couldnt.

If I DID need to make a friction saw out of my shoelaces, it seems that just undoing one half of one shoelace and then tying a quick Knot around my other shoelaces would be a lot faster. Completely unlacing a boot, and tying bowlines is way too much time for the little bit of friction you need to burn through the zip tie... What took 4 minutes here should take 30 seconds... tops.
