This is really cool. I would like to see what similar kinds of solutions he has for when a person goes to north-south or switches their base into scarf or reverse scarf hold. It seems like a critical idea that you do not attempt to escape from a pin when the opponent is purely focused on holding you down. It is in the window of time when the opponent attempts to advance position or set up a submission that the opportunity to escape presents itself.

Exactly... Even i used fight extremely hard against a position that my opponent is holding me down into.. But the more i spent time trying to escape various positions I realized one thing being aware of your opponents reactions.. You have to be able to know counter to all the reactions that he is giving you and keep interplaying between them. If your opponent counters it and does not work you just change your approach to a different thing.. eventually he will present you with the window of opportunity to escape...

Warning: TLTR I have started BJJ 9 months ago as an almost 40 yo. 5 months ago, I figured that baiting my partner to move allows me to keep up because it requires way less effort than trying to move myself or my partner. I have consistently used the concept shown in this video as well as a concept shown in another JJM video that prevents your partner from ever reaching mount (you basically gain half guard on the back door) and it works consistently. 90% of the time, your partner won’t resist the temptation to improve their position. I have been for several months focusing on defensive posture and different baiting systems and my progress since then has been exponential. Instead of being lost and trying to stay afloat, I am conscientiously trying to guide my partners where I want them to go in order to escape in transition, whilst following simple principles of defensive posture. The confidence boost that this gives is invaluable and it makes the journey that much more enjoyable because when you do get caught, you understand very often why you got caught, which then allows you to better prevent getting caught in the same situation again. It is a snow ball effect all around and I now start to see openings that allow me to attack without the fear of the consequences of missing the attack (worst case scenario, I will end up in a position in which I am confident that I can get out of and in which I am comfortable). Thanks so much for the content and insights

Good on you for starting even close to 40, it will add another decade to your athleticism. Perhaps 2. I'm 37, purple belt competitor. It's the best thing I've ever done, and guys like you are such a valuable asset to the sport, and to the gyms you belong. Your thoughtful approach will make you a very skilled high belt. Cheers

@Quico Rebello de Andrade great! If you can, warm up and get a sweat going before your first match. Then just treat it like you're just going live at any night of practice at the gym. Competing is such a treasure. Enjoy it at every belt. Cheers!
