Thanks for the tests. I have been using Prada travel brushes for several years. Since I use them for smallish sketchbooks so big washes are not usually part of the sketch. I have to chuckle when your dog barked when you said squirrel. My dogs would have barked too.

Escoda Ultimo is good for soft gradient washes, human skin tones, lips, flowers (good for Art majors who paints human portraits). meanwhile, Versatil is used for vibrant painting because it can hold enough water just to allow the pigments to stay at first stroke, if u get what i mean. (good for Architects/Urban sketchers) Please observe the color vibrancy among all the test, the versatil is amazing. Thank you so much for the video ♥️♥️♥️

This video was extremely helpful. After years of using cheap synthetic brushes that lose their point after one use I've decided I'm going to give more expensive brushes a try. I decided on the ultimo because water capacity is something I've been frustrated with. I hadn't realized just how soft they are, so this video saved me from being disappointed. I think I'll get a larger ultimo now and maybe a versatil for detail.

Very nice comparison. Thank you. Prado - Urban Sketching . I do a lot of urban sketching so I don't have all day for things to dry or a need for large washes. I find the Prado to be the best for "u-sketchers". The #6 draws thin lines like a #2 & it doesn't put down too much wetness. Perfect for everyday watercolor sketchbooks ... made for quick and light on the go. Versitil- I don't have one yet however, my buddies who use gouache love it. The most purchased because it can be used with various mediums. Folks using acrylics travel too.😊 Perla - Plein Air. Juicy and excellent thin lines. Too juicy for my particular sketchbook style. But excellent for blocks where I use more water & painting painting out and about. It's a beast. Ultimo - Plein Air. Washes and such. Great synthetic squirrel. Thanks again.

Ultimo is one of my absolute favorite brushes from Escoda! I might try the Versatil, as I was disappointed with the Reserva brushes I purchased (I'm wondering if I got damaged brushes... going to try the hot water trick to see if I can get them to behave). As for Perla... I've been very very disappointed by those--they won't hold a point for longer than a week or two, even if I treat them like absolute royalty. Which may not be a problem for other painters, but for the type of painting I do (hyper-detailed, lots of layers), I need that point. I wanted to find an Escoda synthetic I could love, so I'm hoping Versatil will be the answer.
@brianashmorestudio6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Amaya! I suspect that the Veratil will hold a point a bit better than the Perla. However, my Perla is still holding its point pretty well. That may change with more use. Good thing to watch for. That's also interesting about the Reservas. I am tentatively planning to pick up a #12 Reserva to compare to these synthetics. Hmmm. If I get one, I hope it holds its shape. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@empress_craft6 жыл бұрын
I do botanical and natural science art, so my tips have to stay razor sharp! Plus lots of dry brushing. I think that for the average watercolor painter, the tip is probably fine. For what I do, the Perla lost its shape pretty quickly. But I'm hopeful for the Versatil! And it's probably better suited, since it's a sable imitation rather than a straight nylon/taklon type of brush.
@empress_craft6 жыл бұрын
@Yasmine S. I typically use a small ultimo mop for large wet washes in underpaintings, or for other types of painting like loose and fast landscapes. I do want to give the Versatil a try, as I would love a good synthetic alternative to kolinsky brushes.

For details nothing beats the natural sables... As much as I prefer vegan supplies, the frustration with synthetics losing their points is just too real :(

You might like the Barroco series by escoda, they hold the same water but are a little bit stiffer, so you might be able to do more detail work. Btw, all my perlas (sizes 2, 14, 18 and a 10 cat's tongue) still hold perfectly the point, I have done a lot of heavy lifting with them and even used them with pure bleach and ink! Also I have a couple of Reserva, size 8 it's super pointy but size 2 is not at all, maybe smaller sizes of that series don't hold the point so well.

THANK YOU for comparing the different lines of (synthetic) escoda travel brushes and having them in the same sizes. I want to invest in at least 1 escoda brush so this is very much needed for me. Looks like for my style, I'll have to go for Perla as my "hardy" travel brush and then eventually get Ultimo for more relaxed and loose painting sessions outside (and also because the squirrel brush I have is bad; it sheds).

Inspired by this I did a test of my own Escoda n.12 brushes : The results were a bit different from yours ( I will try again to double check though ) Perla 1.1 - Versatil 2.0 - Reserva 2.6. I found my Perla does not hold much water. but it is springy and firm which I do like. Versatil is tremendous value for money.

Sounds like they keep the Prado around because people are used to it. The versatil seems a better buy for most people. The Perla is what surprised me though. It doesn't look like a watercolor brush, but it performs way better than the others. If people have been saying that the Versatil performs as well as Sables, then the Perla must be better than the Sable. Would love to see a fight-off between the Perla, Versatil and Reserva.

I used to use some white synthetics when I was just learning to paint and they were AWFUL... stiff, carried very little water, and tended to unload all the water when you made a stroke. So, I was skeptical about the Perla before trying one. They handle beautifully. After comparing these four, I was thinking the same thing about the Reserva. I do wonder how these stack up against real sable. I will try to get ahold of a #12 Reserva and check it out (and do a video). Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have a 14 jackson's Artica that is the same as perla and it exceed my expectations which were high to begin with. I have kolinsky and squirrel brushes to compare and the Perla (or Artica) and the silver black velvets for me are the brushes that make more sense for watercolors when you put performance, quality and price all in consideration. Both black velvets and Perla provide great control, not an excesive water holding capacity but just the needed, great... Great points, and are firm and soft at the same time. Of corse different styles of painting will need different fibers but Perla and Black Velvet are sooooo 👌👌👌👌

Hi, Thankyou for the review..this is really helpful. Would you suggest Perla for watercolor art ?

Definitely! All of these Escoda brushes are great for watercolor despite their differences.

The Jackson Artica travel brush is a clone of the Escoda Perla. It is made by Escoda, so you can get a "Perla" travel brush for a really good price that way. Same thing for their regular Articas. I have a bunch of them, and they are exactly the same. If only they held more water, they would be my "go-to" brushes...

Hi Brian! Thanks so much for your video! I've been looking at the Escoda travel brushes for a while...and felt overwhelmed! Which series would you recommend for someone who does both watercolour and gouache painting? Thanks :)

Hi Maria! I don't really use gouache but I checked with a buddy that uses it all the time (Jared Loves to Draw). He said that he avoids using his Escoda brushes with gouache since it is more harsh on brushes than transparent watercolor. He said that he uses the cheaper Raphael Kaerrels for gouache. However, he did say that Escodas would be great for gouache if you do want to use them. As far as which one?... my guess would be that any of them would be good since they are all good with transparent watercolor. If you haven't already, I would definitely recommend checking out Jared's channel.

It seems that the versatil was made as a mix between the prado and the ultimo?...more like a mop-but springier?
@brianashmorestudio6 жыл бұрын
Hi Desiree! It's tough to say. The Versatil and the Prado have very similar "snap" to them. I don't know if I would be able to tell them apart if I were using them without looking at the name on the handle... they handle that similarly. So, I wouldn't consider the Versatil to be "mop like" in handling.

I have the Versatil. I just need to work it harder 😊

I'm honestly shocked that the versatil and prado, supposed to imitate kilinsky fiber and advertised in their website as such, hold less water than the perla. Now I'm rethinking wich one buy for a travel brush.

I was disappointed that Escoda Reserva Series 1212 and series 1214 Kolinsky Sable brushes of comparable size were not evaluated in the same test. At 12:15 when testing the ability to create a fine point is was obvious to me that the stroke was widened each brush failed to paint a full width line, breaking into a dry brush effect Capped travel brushes are limited in the diameter of the belly of the hair which serves as the paint reservoir or refill. For that reason I prefer to use ordinary brushes and not travel brushes. I believe the paint flow in synthetic brushes is slower and poorer than pure sable brushes, and a one brush does all travel brush needs to be able to create large area washes at one stage and fine lines at other times. Travelling, I always carry a larger flat brush about 3/4" or 20mm wide, a good squirrel hair mop brush as a cheap round brush, and an Asian round ferrule brush that can be reshaped from round to a chisel point about 6mm wide, plus a Kolinsky sable round brush size 14. Each natural hair naturally tapers to a fine point and brushes hand made by skilled crafts people ensure that all of the hairs taper to the tip. Synthetic brushes have hairs of constant diameter. Developments in the actual fibres and the hair assembly are improving synthetic brushes, especially in chisel point brushes. The sizes mean nothing. The diameter of the hair at the ferrule, the maximum diameter at the belly, and the length of the hair more accurately describe the size of the brush. Your demonstrations are well designed an provided good comparisons, thank you Brian.
