Thanks for video... Scandi grind is best for bushcraft due to its thinner edge but no knife is designed to be beat through wood, use the right tool for the job... Bring a hatchet
@mattvalade26094 жыл бұрын
habilis bush tools SRT is actually designed to baton with.

Thanks for the baton test on your RB3 good info to know, I couldn't bring myself to doing it to mine knowing what would likely occur, so I applaud you sir! My opinion is that for anyone that strops there knives the RB3 will eventually take a nice covexed edge which then should hold up much better to hard use, its a shame that the RB3s edge is so fragile with the grind Esee puts on these from factory but I still think its a great knife that fills a notch that was missing in Esees knife line and I believe we'll all grow to appreciate the RB3 designs in time... if you use it enough to have to strop it and eventually develop a solid convex edge, The RB3 has great potential to be put along side the best bush craft knives on the market.
@guns4funcajanajustin5 жыл бұрын
It works well for detail work notches etc. A strop is just for fine tuning the edge it will not change it. It is a outstanding bush knife i use it for carving woods as well

Thank you for your honest test, I am interested in this knife but want to know its limitations. I think what a lot of people don't realize is that bushcraft knives are typically meant for working with soft green woods. Most acute scandi ground knives that I have roll like this, or chip if they have a harder heat treat above 60 RC when used on dry hardwoods. Which is why a lot of custom makers do one of two things, either add a small micro bevel or make the angle more obtuse such as 15 degrees DPS rather than 10-12. I know you didn't want to compare mora but even some of their knives roll when used like this. Said knives typically have a 12.5 degree DPS grind as opposed to other knives that they make a little more beefy and obtuse to handle the abuse better. Anyway, thank you again and I am off to check out more of your videos.

Awesome test. Given the results I wouldn't use it to cut wood, instead use it to prepare camp meals cause it seems really sharp.

Bushcraft blades are for... BUSHCRAFT. Not batoning. Survival knives are for that purpose since it may be all you have. Making spoons, bowls, drilling holes utility etc. Thats why. I shouldnt have to explain this.

great test review of the knife mate. The size of the Camp Lore makes it a secondary blade for me when out bushcrafting but great blade for the buck :)

Gawd…. I’ve seen a lot of dipshit knife reviews and this one is cream of the crop. The RB3 is a collaborative knife between Esee and the guys name on the blade. It’s intended to be a proper zero scandi, no micro bevel, its a bit delicate, but cuts soft woods like crazy. It’s meant for bush crafting not bush bashing. If you buy a RB3 just whittle with it for awhile, if you like the way it cuts then keep the bevel flat using 3M machinists honing paper stuck to a 1.5” wide strip of 2-5mm thick carbon fiber plate or lexan/plexiglass (anything stiff and perfectly flat). Gorilla Glue a piece of old leather belt to the other side and add Tormek paste if you want. That setup above and a steady hand will produce a scalpel sharp edge on any pure scandi. If you decide you want to do more than just carving, like bing a dope and send it through a cedar plank half sideways, then by all means put a small secondary bevel on it before you commence to fucking it up. Either way, dont ignorantly bawl about a substandard product.

Thanks for doing this, so I didn't have to as I was a bit curious with my RB3. It's the best carver I own, so I'll pair it up with a chopper like the Junglas or 5 or a small axe when I head out.

Seems like ESEE had us wait a long time for a substandard product. Considering that ESEE is known for hard-use gear, I don't see how they missed the mark on their first dedicated bushcraft knife. I'm returning mine. Thanks for your review.

Great show and tell. I'm not a fan of Batonning with a Dedicated Bushcraft style knife, because they are not made for that purpose. But for the Price of a Camp Lore knife it should have held up much better than what it did.

Steels to soft for scandi zero° Tops scandivex has no issues like this bit even a zero degree tops doesn't do this. The last knife I had that dented like this was my Real Steel Bushcraft Plus scandi in 14C28N... Way to soft for such a high thin scandi edge. I returned that knife for their full flat and it was excellent. Using scandis for batoning can work ya just gotta have a harder steel heat treatment. Lauri puukkos amd Enzo Brisa does it just fine ...Esee needs to haet treat their scandis to 60+ Hrc problem solved esp 1095 it's excellent at that higher hardness imho.

Funny thing is my Mora Bushcraft Black which is half the cost has never chipped out like this and I've beat the snot out of it. I would almost bet even the less expensive Moras like the Robust or Companion HD would hold up better than the RB3 and they aren't even a full tang blade. Esee definitely has some issues with this knife and is evident not only in your testing but more so in how long it took them to finally release it.

I'm sure the average guy would use this type of blade for bushcrafting small projects .It would be a second carry knife for my kit . I would always use the larger blade for battoning . If it was you only knife I would use it in a jamb , Gerry

@Airik1111bibles3 жыл бұрын
That's true but, that steel and knife design should be able to handle that work. I've used almost every scandi out there and even a $5 mora doesn't dent like that. The steel is way to soft for zero degree edges. Gerber has their new scandi in 420hc and I've seen people baton way worse stuff than that. They are very comparable designs .

Pretty sure when it sais not for baton, that's what it means. Probably was meant to be used in conjunction with other esee knives for heavy work, and this for light work. Even Tops knives don't have a true scandi grind, they have a second bevel.
