My 17 year old godson who was born with Autism, also has underdeveloped optic nerves and he got to try these...he cried when he saw everything clearly for the first time, and it broke my heart to hear about it. His mom just started a fundraiser today to try to come up with the money to get him a pair.

Good to know the technology is progressing. However, the price of the device is outrageous. In Europe, eSight 4 costs almost 8000 EUR. Many of my handicapped friends would benefit from eSight, but they could never afford it, living on their social benefits 200 EUR / month, which is barely enough to pay their rent and have some cheap food. I myself am a visually impaired programmer, also doing some electronics repair work using magnifying glasses and a large computer screen. I earn enough to afford eSight, but I would be scared to use it knowing that a small accident could damage an 8000 EUR device. Poking around with a hot soldering iron can turn out to be so much more expensive than the device I'm repairing. Reading eSight specs, I don't quite see why their device should cost more than a high-quality VR headset, which usually costs around 1000 EUR (including also game controllers and many built-in cameras and higher resolution screen and FOV than eSight offers). Knowing that their target market are people with low income, I think these devices should be subsidized by the manufacturer themselves, balancing their other, more mainstream product prices to avoid losses.

Amazing!! The fact that they achieved this means the technology will only improve and probably become more affordable over time as they fine-tune it and make it a more normalized product. Maybe even insurance will start covering it. I do wonder HOW it makes people see, is it basically just little TVs of what you're looking at right up in front of your eyes or is there something more complex happening? What/how do people see? Because cochlear implants apparently DO NOT AT ALL sound like what your ears produce - something I realized recently.
@prototypep4
@prototypep4 2 жыл бұрын
The eye works remarkably like a camera. We have photosensitive cells on the retina that function like a sensor. Cone cells determine colour, light filtration and most of your vision acuity. Rod cells handle low light vision. You have the pupil which acts as an aperture in a lens and determines how much light gets in. That's a very basic rundown and not at all nuanced. Further to that this basically has no depth of field and no field of view close to the natural eye. That footage of someone playing cricket with this on is a complete lie, it will not adjust that quickly to a depth of field change. You'd see the person release the ball easily enough but everything inbetween would be guesswork. The pricing is obscene too, the medical industry needs a swift kick in the ass to stop exploiting people in need. I'll never endorse a shill like this. Yes the product would help a lot of people but the sheer greed of it means fuck the company.

The main question I have is why these glasses are so expensive, while VR glasses, for example, are already available for much less money. I can understand that there is a much smaller sales market for such special products, but to make such a profit out of it is almost dishonest in my opinion when you think about the material price and especially the target group. In summary: Thanks for developing, but it would be nice if the hardware was open-source and affordable for everyone.

Start a garden, pick up drums,guitar or bass, Take college courses, Try out wood lathing("Theblindwoodturner" on youtube is very inspirational for us blind folk) I've been blind for 32 years(guess how old I am...34) You gotta find something to keep your mind/hands active and give you a reason to get out of bed. I know depression sucks from experience and me telling you these things may seem silly now but when you dig yourself out, you'll be glad you let yourself read the words. Plus these will be dirt cheap in a year or two, they're so expensive right now because they have no major company covering the new tech research/development costs for the algorithms that are being written. You don't have to pay 6k outright, you could always get a loan(our insurance will eventually cover it hopefully) or even start a small business and slowly earn them with your own hard work( that's what I'm doing, I sell veggies and herbs from my organic garden and selling wood carvings) and that would also help with the depression. If you ever need to message me for advice or just to toss around ideas feel free, from one blind guy to another, Keep your head up and keep fighting.

I don’t like that it can connect wirelessly to devices, imagine someone who is legally blind getting their vision hacked, it could even be done without them noticing, worrying.

Yeah but who would do that? Imagine how hard it would be to create realistic fake optics. If you were capable of smth like that you would have at least 6 digits on your annual income. No need for criminal bullshittery

I looked through the esight in 2018 if you have one blind eye like me, no it will not. If you have the other eye that is visually impaired like me, then yeah it can help that eye, i didn't get it because it was so expensive and i thought i couldn't walk with it. :O SO i'd have to walk stop walk stop. O: but i guess i could. Now i'm loosing vision, idk how much i'll have left at the end. O: God said i'd have some left. Could be light perception, idk. :)

Of course its proprietary hardware and not open for anyone to make their own. That's just disgusting. Why not make it open source so other people can do the same thing why do you have to focus on profits over actually helping humanity?

i kinda feel jealous of how cool blind people (legally blind , im guessing) are able to adjust their vision , THATS how good technology should be! One thing bothers me , 3hours of battery for vision seems waay too weak, hope they fix it, so u can charge it lot less often
