Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel. For this week's video, I am taking a look at the handy EuroNight sleeper train service from Bratislava to Praha (Prague).
This service runs from Budapest, through Hungary to Bratislava, Slovakia. From there it continues onwards to Břeclav, just a short hop away from the Czech border. At this station, the train waits for six hours, to allow other portions to decouple, as well as give some time for people to sleep. After this wait, the carriages join the first morning express run towards the Czech capital of Praha (Prague), stopping off at major stations on the route.
There are day trains on this route, operated by České Dráhy/ZSSK/MÁV-START, which are much faster, but a lot less of an adventure in my opinion. Budapest to Praha is also served by budget RegioJet conncections, running instead via Wien, and avoiding Bratislava.
This service offered amazing standards with its ex-CityNightLine carriages (including a shower in the coach), an amenity kit, and even free breakfast. As well as this, it's certainly well priced as well. Watch the video to see why I love this useful sleeper connection.

Ohh, very nice, České dráhy! It's funny ride this route almost 10 hours, when daily train takes about 4 hours.. but when you calculate for a hotel stay + train ticket, night train is very good alternative! I never tried ČD's sleeper train, but I plan to travel to Zurich in summer. Posílám pozdrav z Prahy :-D

A few times I thought about taking a sleeper night train, but took a fast day train instead, because there was no sleeping time to justify the choice. If a trip is longer than 8 hours, the night trip becomes more attractive, as there is enough time to sleep.

It is great to see that the service has improved so much. I remember travelling to Slovakia with an overnight train "Excelsior" back in the 1990s, when the sleepers were stinky, messy and some were even infested with bedbugs. Most people deliberately avoided them also because of security issues (drunks, thieves). The company had a very difficult time to restore confidence in this service. Night Sleepers are a great way of travelling around Europe after one understands that this is not an express train, but rather a moving one night hotel, where you check-in at one place and check-out on a new location. For 1500 CZK, you are lucky to get a decent hotel room in Prague during high-season.

Very nice review of that service. As local I can tell you that this line was established about 3 years ago. Historically it used to be EuroNight train Metropol from Budapest to Berlin (even in times of iron curtain). Train started around 20 from Budapest, 23h from Bratislava and in Břeclav there was just 40 minutes hodgepodge with EN Chopin going from Wien to Krakow. This train went without stops to Pardubice and then Prague and Berlin. Because ordinary stop of this train was in Prague (last 10s years when track is faster) at before 4AM, they left some sleepers in Pardubice from 3 to 5AM and those arrived to Prague on ordinary passenger train at around 7AM to Prague (still quite early). Anyway one day german operator said that part from Prague to Berlin is not profitable. So next year was train just cut in Prague and slighthly slowed down. 2h stop in Brno around 2AM, but no split in Pardubice. Arrive to Prague at 6Am. That was no success at all. Transit southeast-nordwest was interrupted and arrival to Prague very early. There were also more pushes to economy. So it came this solution you have experienced: "Old Metropol" went only from Budapest to Breclav as you have on video. Than there is big stopover in Breclav (easily last sleepers are left out of station) and sleepers are connected to first day train. But old EN Chopin was changed to new NightJet ÖBB train Wien-Břeclav-Bohumín(where is another split to Krakow and Warsaw)-Wroclaw (PL) - Berlin. And they change carriages each other. Arrivalt to Berlin is about 10AM. So Direct night connections between Bratislava, Budapest and Berlin is still not interrupted.As bonus there are new direct connections to Wroclaw in Poland. Yes quite cost efficient

The name of the train is Metropol. The name is comming from the route, the metropolitan centres of Central Europe: Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Brno, Budapest. The first Metropol night train started 1911 (!!!) on the Budapest-Berlin route. The current form was born by 2018 and contains four groups of coaches: EN 476 Budapest (HU) --> Breclav (CZ) EN 476 Budapest (HU) --> Breclav (CZ) --> IC 574 Brno (CZ) --> Prahue (CZ) EN 476 Budapest (HU) --> Breclav (CZ) --> EN 40476 Bohumín (CZ) --> Wrocław (PL) --> Berlin (DE) EN 476 Budapest (HU) --> Breclav (CZ) --> EN 40456 Bohumín (CZ) --> IC 406 Warszawa (PL)

If you ask the cabin crew, they will give you a large towel (used for "Deluxe" compartments with shower). And if you want, a large dinning table can be installed by crew to compartment (it is hidden on corridor). And why there are 4 reading lights? :) If you have "double" bed compartment, crew can move middle bed little bit up, so lower bed have more space than in "tripple" bed compartment.

It's always pleasant to see a video from my hometown main station without the author completely tearing it to shreds (probably deservedly, although before 2011, it was A LOT worse than it is now). I also enjoyed the review itself, as I've recently considered doing a trip like this on one of ZSSK's night trains to the east of the country, so it's good to see that the quality matches what they're trying to sell and I'm quite a lot more inclined to try this out for myself sometime. That being said, there's no such thing as "Slovakian". The country's name is "Slovak Republic", therefore it's the Slovak capital, etc. You wouldn't say that you've arrived in the "Czechian capital" despite Czechia also being commonly used nowadays. Cheers.

That is good value for money to replace a night in a hotel. We went from Prague to Budapest by train once, many years ago - took about 6 hours, if I remember rightly. I imagine Bratislava to Vienna only takes about 20 minutes on any train.

Well, they used to be equally good, but then Mondelez Food changed the recipe, either in order to increase their profit or to kill the brand and/or replace it by other brands they own (e.g. Milka or Oreo). This happened to other traditional Czech products they now own as well , and e.g. to the Swiss Toblerone they also own. They also produce many of the "Czech" snacks in Poland.

Strange, I normally find Czech railways to be punctual and reliable, compared to elsewhere.
@jmsmilfajt
@jmsmilfajt 3 жыл бұрын
It's a common misconception of most Europeans that their state railway company is the worst. Believe it or not but I usually hear only hate comments from Germans on DB, Swedes on SJ etc... we are not an exception. 😅 Statistics wise, ČD are more punctual than DB but a bit less than.. let's say, ÖBB. I commute to Prague for 11 years and yes, there were dozens of trains cancelled or delayed but it was almost never ČD's fault, in most cases someone commited a suicide or a tree fell on the railways during a storm and since the density of the railway network is so high, most lines can be detoured... which obviously cause delays but people don't usually understand the context and just cuss and swear.😅

Yeah, that's kind of true, but when I go to work, the train to Prague has 10 m delay 4/5 work days (from Prague only 5)

@@CZpersi Superalbs travel says he had a private room (what we call sole occupancy) for which he paid around £50. Surely it would not be £50 each for a couple to share the same room? I can understand the price per bed if sharing with up to 5 strangers but it would surely not be the same as on this trip.

The EU night trains are an absolute gem, even back in mid 2000s when I took one from Prague to Frankfurt a few months after they were put in service. The luxury compared to the old style vinyl bed sleepers was night and day (pun intended). The staff were also awesome as I used to smoke at the time and the nearest smoking carriage was a long hike to the other side of the train, so the train steward simply reached into the ceiling, disabled the smoke detector and just asked for me to open the window when smoking. He also came by with some beers later on (after he was off the clock of course) and several of us from another cabin had a small party.

I remember taking a sleeper train from Praha to Presov in the 90's and the ticket taker telling us to tie the door shut with cloth or rope because there were Ukrainian mafia on the train who would break in and steal. Things seem to have changed for the better twenty five years later. Back then the Czech and Slovak trains were like something out of the 1940's, but I actually miss those days. The East, from Prague to Moscow is completely different now. Everything is so modern now compared to the 90's.
