Eskom tariff hikes hit poor residents hard - Ngwane

Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee chairperson Dr Trevor Ngwane addresses concerns over Eskom's proposed tariff hikes - 36% for direct customers and 40% for municipal consumers. With electricity prices having risen by 450% over the years, he warns, "The poor will get poorer, as this will hit hard on residents' pockets."

We must also look at what it means to be poor middle and rich in the country. I am seen to be middle class but also couldn't afford to switch on an electrical heater this winter. What then upsets me is seeing places like Alexander connected illegally, having on up to 4 heaters at a time. Others are to be shown to switch on a heater and leave it on the whole day so the house is warm when they arrive back home.
